it is really sad to sell a Z but if you have another one anyway why not get a different make. Since you are going to be selling a z to do this work out if you want keep the mustang for yourself or sell it for a profit. If you want to keep it and it's as good as you describe its probably worth it. I have been looking at mustangs (not in great depth though) over the last year and they hardly ever come up that cheap. They are either absoulte wrecks for $3000-$5000 or driving vehicles for $15000+. Now if you are doing it for a profit, and even more so if you are selling a z to do it, make sure you work out every little cost involved. Memebr 68GTCS owns a 68 GT/CS California Special Mustang. Maybe ask him his advice, he might be able to help you with hidden costs or the parts that are hard/expensive to source/replace etc. Do a very detailed budget cause I reckon 90% of peoples car budgets are out by $1000's Edit: find out how much they are selling for especially due to the GFC now. Also a lot of people list these cars at a price but that doesn't mean they are actually selling at the listed price. Anyway I have attached a mustang I saw on ebay a year ago, i think its quite hot...

+1 for buy it now. I love the look of the fastbacks but I also love the coupe(?) If it were me I would keep it (I've always wanted a Z, a mid 60's corvette and a mid 60's mustang) but if you want to make a buck it sounds like a cheap project. I've noticed most mustangs in decent complete order are around $18000-$25000 (not sure if they actually sell though) and showy ones go for a bit more. I know you can get few off ebay from the states for $15000 but such a hassle. I would research how much similar cars are going for and then work out dollar per dollar what you would need to get it done.

Hi Doug, welcome. If you can do 95% of the work yourself I say go for it. If not you can have just as much fun with the L series and obviously won't have any hassles with engineering/roadworthy. It would probably also mean the car is off the road for less time and some "less dedicated" people doing the conversion get overwhelmed and give up half way through. As Steve will probably mention, if you are doing it for fuel economy purposes the initial cost of the conversion outweighs any fuel savings in the future. I would say research how to get the most out of your L series... electric dizzy, round top su carbs or fuel injection and head work etc and stick with that but that is just my opinion. I can't quite picture yours zedevan, would you fill in the whole back of the car so there wasn't that charchoal trim at all and then integrate the lights into the body? That could be quite cool. Here are a few variations of my design...

Thanks guys Yeah steve, atm I'm looking at making a plastic mould to make the clear acrylic cover which means I could make quite a few sets. I'm also going to make a mould for a one piece panel (to replace the charcoal grey/black bit) that bulges out with the lines of the car. There will still be a distinction between the body and the tail light panel, but rather than being recessed it will curve out inline with the body. Might be kind of hard to explain, but you probably get the idea. As for the actual lights I'm either going to use some parts from the mazda 3 (the rear lights on the inside) and or make up some surrounds using a lathe etc. Still working out the details

Hi all, after seeing JasonB's custom tail lights over in here http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,4112.0.html I've finally got around to designing my own. I have been looking at custom tail light ideas pretty much since I got my first zed (6 or 7 years?) and as everyone knows there aren't a lot of options out there. I have been briefly researching how to mould your own and I'm starting to believe it can be done. So here is the design I'm working on atm... note that this would be for my project 2+2, I'm leaving old yella as it is:)

Ok so I've finally gotten around to uploading this. I will update over the coming days with more info and links to bigger pics etc... Day 1.... ...was a slow start having been up until 2:30 cleaning and packing the car the night before. It was dark for 9am, too dark. I opened the garage door and sure enough it was pouring down rain. Luckily by the time Steve arrived at my house the storm was somewhere up past Cairns (yes he was a little late ) We fuelled up at Indooropilly and began our pilgrimidge to Warwick. We were only on the highway for about 10mins when we came across Wilbur in his rb powered 260z and his wife in a more traditional 260z. They were going a little bit too slow for our liking (which is something you would rarely say about Wilbur's driving) so we powered on. The drive was quite relaxing and we took it fairly steady most of the way (both Steve-o's and mine's speedo wasn't working and we weren't keen on a ticket). Wilbur and his wife eventually caught up and we drove in mini convoy until reaching Warwick. We arrived relatively late to the registration but there were still a few zeds around the streets so naturally the camera came out. After we received a quick feed and our bag of datsun goodies (shirts, caps etc) we thought we would go check in. We thought we would use the afternoon to give the cars another wipe down and do a bit more detaling before the show on Saturday. Steve's car was parked infront of some burly bikers that were staying across from our room and it wasn't long before he was getting cleaning advice from the boys. They were actually a really nice bunch and knew what they were talking about from years of cleaning and polishing bikes. However, the clouds overhead were growing ever more worrisome and we were beginning to think that all of this cleaning was going to end up being a waste of time. We considered going to Supercheap to purchase some car covers but thought a hunt for an open bottleshop might be a more constructive use of time. Being good Friday our quest didn't end well so it was down to leftover Smirnoff blacks and Jagermeister for me. Steve thought he would have a little glass of milk and have his afternoon nap whilst the men gathered outside with some social lubricant and a bit of car talk . Luckily Simon doesn't look anything like his Z After everyone dispersed for dinner, Steve and I thought we could go take some photos seeing as though our cars were the cleanest they have probably ever been. We drove around for a while but only found a couple of good locations that were lit well enough to get an alright photo. We ended the night by watching Zack & Miri Make a Porno which probably wasn't the smartest idea for two guys sharing a motel room as the whole movie sounds, well, like a porno. Day 2.... ...was another early start to do a bit more cleaning before the show and shine. Once the Z's were cleaner than an episode of the Brady Bunch, Steve and I took off for the show. We parked down the main strip with the majority of the other zeds, purchased a hearty breakfast (hotdogs with cheese) and began our tour of the show. They are smaller files and sorry for the bad quality, I ran a batch with an auto colour and auto levels and it messed up some of them a bit and I really couldn't be bothered fixing it. Then rain held out until the very end of the show, which I thought was very considerate. It did postpone the drags until Sunday however. We met 2 dirty Frenchmen, Josepf and Michael, earlier in the day and thought we could go for a quick drive to pass the time. I let Josepf take the helm of Old Yella as we went to find a video shop. The rest of the day wasn't overly exciting (or Z related)... We ended up watching a movie and played some guitar hero until we thought it was late enough to go out and meet some, errr, locals. This could have been a story in itself but in short, we sunk some booze and pool balls whilst Steve got acquainted with a fairlady (and not the Z variety).The night ended surprisingly late with Steve in bed with two seedy French men and not a fairlady in sight... where abouts is the car located? I've got a pretty full on weekend but if it's pretty central I could maybe pop around with you?

No they all had the overriders but a lot of people take them off for a "cleaner" look. I'm doing this to my cars but at the same time a nicely straightened and chromed bumper with new rubbers and overrides does look mean. It completes the lines of the car at the front. Replacing those rubbers can be expensive... Stewks picture is a good example of how good it can look with them left on

from the pictures i say it looks very tidy. The paint looks fresh. Has he been driving it for a while? The question you have to ask yourself is if the rust was removed correctly and it has jsut been painted then why would he sell it now? Doing the rust on my 2+2 has taken 2 years (not working everyday obviously) and we have welded in 140 patches and it's a lot of work, I wouldn't even dream of seeling it cause I wouldn't get the money for all that hard work (well my dads hard work). Basically i would jsut probe him a bit more about the bodywork adn then make your decision. If you think it has been a bit of a dodge job, I don't think $2000 to $3000 is a lot of money to have a stylish car for a few years but just know that you might have to do body work on it if you want it to live or sell it for similar money. If you can pick that up in running condition it would be a very tidy daily driver and i think worth a good solid $3000.
