    I wouldn't bother replacing that reverse idler gear unless it has some massive chips running along the length of the teeth. Finding a replacement in better condition will be a challenge. If you want to tidy it up, I'd just run over the burred edges with a diamond file. Popping out of 5th is the result of the steel bulk ring being worn & not having enough preload to 'lock' the coupling sleeve onto the gear, which makes it pop out of 5th. The Porsche style bulk rings are NLA, so you'll have to find a good second hand replacement.

    Be prepared to fork out many thousands of $ for rust repairs & a minimum 8k for a decent respray.

    No. Late 71B (280ZX & Bluebird) run a LH thread main-shaft nut - they don't come loose. The jumping out of 5th/Rev indicates that the coupling sleeve or the dog ring is badly worn. Time for a rebuild

    I had a look at a gearbox in at Les's today that had the cases off. After a bit of a conflab with Les, we determined that some when you've selected 1st, the selector finger has then moved out of the 1st/2nd rails (who knows how or why) & you've unwittingly selected the 5th/Rev rail. Hence you've selected 2 gear at once which makes the car stall. Something is going on with the selector finger & how it runs in the selector rails. But what I've just typed is all anecdotal anyway... You are still going to pull the box, take it to your mates dad, who still won't find anything, put it back together & give it back to you even though the problem hasn't been found. You'll then be even MORE annoyed that you've spent MORE time & money in not finding the problem, when you should have just taken it to Les to repair in the first place!!!

    Ohhhh! Jay has finally put them up! The dark grey GT2 has nearly 580hp, while the white GT3 is factory @ 475hp. Makes for an interesting comparison...
