  1. Having worked on my own cars for several years now 1 thing that I'm realising more and more is the benefit of the right tool for the job. Struggling with the wrong tools is not a fun way to go about things really. Having the correct tools on hand makes the job a lot more enjoyable and for me anyway gives me a better level of satisfaction as often using the wrong tool causes you to break / ruin things / damage other parts to some extent. I'm also taking lots of photos of everything and how it all goes together as I imagine later on it will help tremendously. Modern phones make it so easy and using cloud based services like Google+ to automatically upload all photos for me and then I just assign them to a photo album means I'm keeping lots of photos easily organised. Also remember there is no need to rush if you have the space to work on things etc.. Hence why I'm so happy to have a garage. Although it is a little annoying having to move the RX-7 in and out of the garage, but at the same time I'd be annoyed leaving it in the rain and sun all day also.
  2. I'm playing along at home also, but also updating my own build thread - even if it's basic stuff since I think it will help others who might be even more newbie than me . I am watching all your updates but sometimes I don't want to reply because it just adds noise to the thread if you know what I mean? Keep up the good work.
  3. I suspect I might have to do this at some stage, but I'm actually motivated to do this now before kids, family, marriage or the big 1 mortgage. Although the way house prices are going in this country I don't know if I'll be buying a house for quite a while. Having seen what happens to most people when the above takes place the add often reads, selling due to starting family or other priorities etc.. I don't wanna be a statistic so I'm trying to do as much as possible this year and next. As for my advice? I sold my first 240z before actually giving welding / rust repair a go myself. I have regretted it ever since and promised I'd learn, so hence I bought #150 and I enrolled in the tafe course. Determined not to give up again this time!
  4. On my flight to San Fran and back I watched a few movies on board the plane. 1. Pacific Rim - Like GodZilla but with Mech Warriors, not much substance to this film but probably appeals to the kids. 2. Enders Game - Enders Lame is what they should have called it. A cross between Starship Troopers and something else that's been done before, I like Starship Troopers (original) but not this...Harrison Ford was pretty average in it also. 3. Gravity - I didn't think it was that special. Interesting but I guess you guys gave me high hopes and I was a little disappointed. Watching on a plane also doesn't help. 4. Russell Brand's - Brand X series. I think he's funny but he might offend some . 5. Captain Phillips - About Somalian Pirates hi-jacking boats. Pretty good film / story actually. 6. GetAway 2013 - Done before, totally unrealistic for a number of reasons. His card had damage off like most Xbox games, unlimited fuel and suffered no mechanical faults throughout the entire film. IMDB gives it 4.3 out of 10, I'd say that's about 1.3 too much .
  5. Minor update... got back from California this morning. I had the 240z side emblems (Steel ones) sent to a work colleague in the US since the seller wouldn't ship to AU. Good in general but they suffered some corrosion (being that they are metal) and I'm not sure how I'm going to fix that yet. Lead fill it perhaps? Anyway worry about that down the line.. Next step was to get the motor onto the stand... Step 1, remove clutch plate. Step 2. Reference photo so I know which way the clutch plate goes. Thick piece / extruded part faces away from motor to rear of car. Step 3. Flywheel bolts, air gun you say? Nahh just a big ass breaker bar. This cracked their bond pretty quickly. Step 4. Original block blue colour and what looks like a welsh plug on rear? Rear main seal wasn't leaking but it was starting to weep a bit..Before letting the flywheel drop off the motor I placed the plastic lid of an old tool set under it and let it fall onto that, rather than smash the concrete etc.. Step 5. I also loosened up the front harmonic balancer bolt so when it comes time later it won't be a prick to undo. I guess next step is to rip engine head off. I didn't actually get the pieces of pipe as suggested. I wanted to get the engine crane under cover as it was getting a little bit of surface rust on it from being outside for the week. I might re-mount it again before I start working on it.
  6. Be a shame to kill it. But you gotta do what you gotta do I suppose.
  7. I noticed a big change when I put a lightened 240z flywheel in my Z. Loves to rev.
  8. Yeah boi I love the colour. Must be a rocket.
  9. Yeah don't even remember it and plod never knocked on my door. So feel free to discard.
  10. Any plans to create short nose covers?
  11. I believe this has sold. Despite rust this will make a great car when finished.
  12. Lol no didn't even know about that. Is it an Australian issued fine? If so it would have been paid.
  13. Looking good without those old flares. Keep up the progress
  14. I've since discovered that the carbs are likely HS6 SUs. Certainly could use a rebuild as seen in photos.
  15. Door cards sold. Centre console sold.
  16. I guess I understand both sides here. He should fix his description I always try and explain the items I sell so that the buyer doesn't get any surprises. Did you leave feedback yet? I always wait till I receive an item. Leaving negative or neutral feedback is a good motivator to do the right thing. But only if you threaten to do it as once done it can't be undone. I agree with George though sometimes just gotta accept the loss for your mental health reasons. I was livid over a $100 parking fine after I left a GoGet share car in a spot and nobody used it for 3 days so it received a parking ticket. GoGet were nice enough to add a $25 admin fee. I couldn't park in reserved spot at the time because some bell end had taken the designated GoGet spot. I was going to call up and cancel GoGet because their policy is last person to park car pays a fine regardless of how long it sits there. I didn't even bother appealing decision with council because I knew it would just stress me further and get me nowhere. So much for sticking it to the man I spose. Not sure if it makes your 25 odd dollar loss any better? But I feel a bit better lol.. I guess the moral of the story is when a seller behaves this way it limits future commerce between you and them. Once bitten twice shy.
  17. What about your electrical timing? Are you running an electronic or points set up? What condition is it in? Does it just idle poorly or drive badly also?
  18. Well done matey. I have always hated the window rattle on mine. There is a Clark rubber near me I think I'll be getting a few bits and bobs there for my projects. Always glad to see alternatives like this.
  19. 8g is still cheaper than an O.S Giken set up. But I'm sure there is more to that set up than an RB head conversion. I think bang for buck rb30 block + 25 or 26 head is the way to go if you want twin cam L6 on the cheap.
  20. Fair enough, yeah inspecting would help. I took a gamble when I bought mine from eBay in SA and had it shipped to NSW. Had no idea how bad it was going to be. I got lucky. This car does look straight at the front and the rear, but photos can hide many problems.
  21. Apparently it has the 2400 cc OHC valve cover also. Bit of an odd ball car, makes me wonder if the previous owner started collecting bits and pieces for it, perhaps buying them from the US. Since this car shouldn't have had that valve cover as far as I can tell only the very first 240z's in AU had that valve cover, from what I've been told.
  22. Ok well this 1 meets your requirement of rusty lol... http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Datsun-240z-/131124893255?ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:AU:1120&clk_rvr_id=594660554617 It's missing seats but they are not hard to replace and it still has the rare hand throttle knob, 240z gear knob (very hard to find the 5 speed button) from the looks of it and the rest of interior dash / console is there. Door cards make me want to commit seppuku. It also features the following: 1. Lovely RHD dash cap piece. 2. Hot wire wheels. 3. 260z flat top carbs. All the bits and pieces that are hard to find. . If you're willing to get your hands dirty this could be a good buy. Just depends on what bidding goes up to. I suspect everyone is watching it like a hawk.
  23. Have you seen this 1? http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/thomastown/cars-vans-utes/datsun-240z-/1038072263 Looks complete minus motor but rusty. I'm surprised it is still around but perhaps owner is asking too much?
  24. Welcome to Hotel California, you can check out - but you can never leave.
