  1. Thanks guys, yeah I was reading the How to rebuild your L-series book and it mentioned marking the cam sprocket in relation to the camshaft but now that you mention it I remember those dowels from other L-GATA motors I pulled apart years ago but never actually got the chance to rebuild... It does mention that the order to undo the head bolts is important to reduce the chance of warpage so I'll do that, and marking the conrod and big end caps in relation to their position is important. However I'm still on the fence as to weather or not I'll do a refresh (seems I'll need new pistons anyway - unless by some miracle it will come out without much damage), or build a warm L28. I have L14 rods, LD28 crank, Triple Mikuni 44s and I'm thinking of using those, but I need to keep it all to a reasonable budget. I was thinking max $5k to rebuild and modify it. But I won't get a head of myself yet, just take 1 step at a time. To be honest I'll be happy to put something together that works lol...
  2. RE: 1 the motor is seized and I can't rotate it. RE: 2 yeah agree .
  3. Fog lights rare. $550 http://www.ebay.com/itm/NOS-GENUINE-VINTAGE-JDM-KOITO-FOG-LAMP-LIGHT-DATSUN-NISSAN-JAPAN-510-240Z-/181348905377
  4. Put together by Ben Ellis from Otomoto.
  5. Quick question fellas. No photos I'm afraid in this update, will get some of those for you lot soon! I've stripped the motor of all it's ancillaries, all that's left is the oil pump and harmonic balancer. My questions are: 1. After I remove the oil pump I'm going to take the rocker cover off and undo the timing chain sprocket bolt. Should I scribe or mark the camshaft sprocket relative to the camshaft position before removing the sprocket? I'm going to either regrind or go with another camshaft profile in all probability so not sure this is required step? 2. Anyway to get the harmonic balancer off without a wheel puller? I think I left mine in Melbourne and a soft mallet ain't working... I'm hoping to get the engine head off this weekend and my first look inside at the damage. I was tempted to document the rebuild through videos but not sure I'll get time to edit the footage and make myself look pretty enough for camera...
  6. You can get around stuff like that by using an AU based proxy server.
  7. Same car from eBay listed on Gumtree also. http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/gumdale/cars-vans-utes/1973-datsun-240z-coupe/1041222636 Says Urgent sale. $22k.
  8. Can't wait to see how the paint turns out, I'm not looking forward to the copious amounts of sanding required on mine either...
  9. Should have gone the leaf blower route instead .
  10. Thanks for the info on the steering wheel, I'm looking forward to the interior discussion on your 432-R replica. Wondering if you'll be running the seats seen in this video also?
  11. Early center console for a bargain price. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1971-1972-1973-Datsun-240Z-Genuine-OEM-Center-Console-/181348253719 I probably spent more than that refinishing mine.
  12. LOL saw your personal message about it. The plan is to migrate to new software and hopefully that will be the end of it.
  13. In other words what Lurch is saying is that your question is very general and it's almost impossible to provide a specific answer. Photos can hide a lot of issues and we don't have any photos of the underside, or the most common rust areas, battery tray, chassis rails, floor pans, rockers, wheel arch, rear hatch slam panel, fuel filler area, lower front fender and behind it. Getting registered also means looking at bushes, suspension, brakes, motor (is it smokey etc..) - all of which cannot be tested from the comfort of our lounge. . Basically you have to buy a 240z like this expecting to find rust in these common areas, unless it's been restored 'correctly' which many have not (bit of bog and she'll be right). If you're not willing to fix these kind of issues, I'd suggest looking for a more complete example (which generally go for $20K + now). But even then there is no guarantee's (unless you see documented photographic evidence of repair process!). Of course you might get lucky with this car and find it has minimal rust / body rot, but only way to know for sure is inspect, take lots of photos and ideally have it put on a hoist so you can see the underside of it. If you can't go personally make sure whoever does is familiar with these cars and will give you a detailed report. All the best.
  14. I have like a million questions, but I must get some sleep first. I will just ask 1 question first. This steering wheel. http://page4.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/d150309389 Is it a 432-R option? I think Ando San's 432-R Replica has it fitted.
  15. As Ledge said to me, it is only metal it can be fixed. Buying sight unseen worst case it is bent like a banana and very rusty. But at that price you could probably sell it on and loose a small amount of money. It all comes down to your expectations but many cars like this don't hang around long for those on the fence.
  16. http://page10.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/m118054852 Brand New, S30Z bonnet. Looks like a non-vented kind. Pricey!
  17. Only people I know in Queensland are the people on this good forum . Maybe ask 1 of the Queensland members to go have a look for you? I'm sure for the right amount of XXXX someone would go take a look .
  18. I'm not looking to buy myself was just wondering what the value of them is, in my mind I was thinking 8k would be a good deal. So 10K seems reasonable, taking into account how rare they are. But I think this appeals to people wanting a C110 GTR replica and those parts can be quite expensive also. Rust free would be a big plus with a car like this though.
  19. Let's say you're selling it? What do you think you 'could' ask for it?
  20. 240K for sale (or apparently not).... http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/cairns-north/cars-vans-utes/1974-datsun-240k-coupe-skyline-c110/1040835730 What's it worth fellas?
  21. Get in quick! http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/eight-mile-plains/cars-vans-utes/1970-s-datsun-240z-coupe-resto-project/1041093454
  22. Looks like a great project for someone and an excellent price. I thought the exact same thing.
  23. Hmmm can of worms in a way. I've considered expanding Auszcar to cover all early Datsun's but at the time it seemed easier to try start a new website instead. So I created www.vintagejdm.com which needs reworking.. We can perhaps start a new thread to discuss? Anyway back on topic. Nice work on the door shell repair and wheel arch is coming along nicely.
  24. When living in Europe I used a similar service called shiply.com not sure if they service Australia though..would recommend.
  25. Hi Guys, I came across this eBay auction. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Datsun-240Z-Restored-Windshield-Washer-Bottle-RARE-/111294562504 I didn't know this was possible, so I looked it up and found this video, but I'm not chemist. Also appears to be used for restoring old computer cases / keyboards etc.. http://retr0bright.wikispaces.com/Retr0Bright+Gel Has anyone ever done this with any of the parts on their Z-cars? I have a washer bottle and voltage regulator cover which would be perfect to test this kind of thing on.
