foz Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Hi all, here is my Z which I'm going to restore, VIN 317. Am I correct in saying its 1969? The original colour was the green, was the Australian imported cars the same colours as the US paint codes?, the seats look blue, what colour would they have been originally, assuming they have been recovered. Also, the side mirrors are odd, with the front left swaying in, instead of out. Did the early models come with these front guard mirrors or have they been added later on? It has the air vents on the hatch, and no holes in the steering wheel spokes which i have read means its a 69. Just want to get my facts straight. The hubcaps have a Z on them, and i thought they should of had a D. Can anyone help me with some info Cheers Quote
Scoota G Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Jeepers the early one's are coming out of the steelwork, that has two right hand side fender mirrors on it but i'll leave all the other info for the traditionalists. Nice ride, had a heavy knock on the passenger side but looking forward to more photos for sure. gav240z 1 Quote
mossy Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 I can't remember where i read it but I think the first z's came out in 70 not 69, I researched the same thing as one of my 240z's build is under 300 Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted January 31, 2011 Moderators Posted January 31, 2011 The early hubcaps had the "D" and the later ones had the "Z". As for the build year, there has been a heap of discussion (and arguments) about whether the US market zeds were first built in 69 or the Aust. delivered zeds. Mine is number 121 and has the same body parts you mention. You should also have the choke/hand throttle on the console, cigarette lighter in the console again and the speedo that starts on 20mph just to name a few that I know of. If you can find a date stamp on a dashboard component, and PM member HS30H (hope I got it right) he can translate it to what year it was assembled. Quote
NZeder Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 These threads might help http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,6937.msg63655.html#msg63655 http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,2180.msg16279.html#msg16279 There was another thread that I can't find right now that went into more detail but your car is more likely to be a 1970 than a 1969. The whole 69 thing comes from the US 240z which as stated in the two links above were build in much greater numbers in 69 - while the RHD export cars might have been build in the period they were not completed until the engine harmonics were corrected with the new crank design. chris240 Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 if your door cards are original and your shock tower "diamond" vinyl wrap is black, the chances are your seats would have been black also.. Also If you want to be a good samaritan than sell your 5spd gearknob to adam AKA brown hornet Quote

Mr Camouflage Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Your car is a late 1970 build, judging by the original engine number. Engine numbers for Z cars that were built in 1969 (which we never got here in Aus as far as I can tell ) end in the low thousands ( 4 digit engine number not including leading zeros). Eg if you engine number is in the low thousands, such as 002518 , it's a 1969. Yours is in the 20,000's which puts it about late 1970, Probably 12/1970. Quote
dalee Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 I have car number 518 and I tracked down to a build date in Mar/Apr 1970. At a stab i would say Jan/Feb 70 would be a reasonably accurate build date for your car. Quote
Ledge Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 Hi Foz You beat me to the punch i was just about to ask the same question about my project car Chassis is HS30 00068 Check out what is says on rego label 1969 Datsun (if my pics upload) Also has no tool hatches Engine is 011483 I still think its and early 70 going by engine number but the guys on this forum have more 240z knowledge than me. foz Posted February 1, 2011 Author Posted February 1, 2011 hey thanks everyone, conclusion is its a 1970! Great having this site available with so much knowledge out there cheers, will be back with a ton more questions as the car progresses Quote
Ben Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 All that really matters is that another Series 1 RHD has been saved... And I have to say, it's in pretty good condition compared to all the others of the same vintage I've seen. (un-restored of course) Quote

Regards Paul Hi Paul I'd say yours is around 08/1970 going by the engine number. Would have bee rolling off the production line around the same time as HLS30-08128 Quote
Mr Camouflage Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 I have car number 518 and I tracked down to a build date in Mar/Apr 1970. At a stab i would say Jan/Feb 70 would be a reasonably accurate build date for your car. I'd have to disagree. 518 would be early 1971. some time between January and May. I know the guy with car number HS30 00501, and it gets a special mention in the Nissan FSM's as the first car to roll off the production line in 01/1971. Its also listed in the Service bulletin as the first of the Series II cars for Jan 1971, along with HLS30-21001 which gives some indication of the difference in the volume of left hand drive cars produced against right hand drive cars produced. By 1971 they had made over 20,000 left had drive export models, and only 500 right hand drive export models. Quote
Ledge Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 Hi Mr Camouflage Thanks heaps for that, I was told there was some way to cross reference with the USA cars and engine numbers. Much Appreciated Regards Paul Quote
NZeder Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 My last 240z had engine number 67934 was chassis ID around 1830-1840 and was sold/registered in NZ as a new car in/on 20th Jan 1972. So that would make the car an oct/nov 71 build at a guess (without looking up the engine number to match with US numbers) I believe my other old HS30-00016 which is now in NSW in OZ owned by Peter Campbell (who I sold the car to here in NZ before he moved back to Oz) which originally had L24 006777 installed was imported in to NZ in 89 from Japan and then 9 years later was imported into Oz by Peter. This car had 1969 seat belts. When I checked with Nissan in Japan about the history of the car when I purchased in the mid 90's they told me production information was limited/lost and the best they could tell as the car was finished in early 1970 Quote
Zedback Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 Sorry to chime in late, but if it's any help my rust bucket is plated 4/1971 and is car #618. It has tool box hatches behind the seats. Mike Quote
