charleszed Posted October 19, 2014 Posted October 19, 2014 Hi Ledge, Great car! sorry to hear about the engine troubles. i was wondering where you got that front strut brace for your z i have been looking for one like that for a while. looking forward to the next stage of the car. charles Quote
Ledge Posted October 19, 2014 Author Posted October 19, 2014 HI Charles It is for a series 3 rx7 if my memory is correct. I got from jap wrecker for $50. you need to modify the bracket but easy as Regards Paul Quote
Brabham Posted October 20, 2014 Posted October 20, 2014 What happened to the engine Paul? I didn't look close enough but have you seam welded your shell or has the cage stiffened it up enough? Also wondered what fuel you were running and what the benefits are of going to E85. However I would imagine that you would need to modify your fuel system/corrosion proof it to combat the effects of the ethanol correct? Did you also extend your frame rails to stiffen it up. Cheers and hope to see it next year. Quote
Ledge Posted October 20, 2014 Author Posted October 20, 2014 Hi Brabham Number 6 rod decided it wanted some freedom. Have not pulled it out yet so don't know what caused this. My oil pressure and other data logs don't show any obvious issues. Yea the shell has been stitched up. The cage is full on and has plenty of attachment points. The fuel system is setup and good for E85. But it is a pain for me to get it so I haven't changed yet. The new engine when done will require E85 or Custom blend. I hope to be there next year. On the way over I was only ever go there once, But as I didn't get the time on the track I wanted I will definitely be back. Just depends how long the engine takes. The budget is what will make it take long time not the builder. Cheers Paul Quote
dat2kman Posted October 20, 2014 Posted October 20, 2014 You should look at a road trip before next year wtac thing, and combine say another event, on the way there or back. A mob called FOSC do events at Eastern Ck, but check which layout they will use. Or pick up on an ARDC Sprints meeting, Combine that with say a Wakefoeld or a Winton l sprints event. Surprising the number of entrants who have either never, or, only ladt years, have run at EC. A lot of $$ layout for little track time, very hard to "learn" it properly. Gives you a distinct advantage over the rest of the $200,000 "race" cars, that get finished two hours before the wtac event starts! Quote
Ledge Posted October 21, 2014 Author Posted October 21, 2014 Problem for me is running my own business finding the time to be away for over a week is hard. I would love to spend more time on the track that's for sure. Will hopefully be back there next year bigger and stronger so I can do a decent amount of laps. Cheers Quote
Ledge Posted October 21, 2014 Author Posted October 21, 2014 For anyone who hasn't seen the footage already Quote
260DET Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 Great video, aren't you supposed to go flat through turn 1 though? Quote
Brabham Posted October 25, 2014 Posted October 25, 2014 Great video, aren't you supposed to go flat through turn 1 though? Not in a tin top at EC, only in an open wheeler Quote
Ledge Posted October 25, 2014 Author Posted October 25, 2014 Great video, aren't you supposed to go flat through turn 1 though? I wish. Maybe after ive done more than 10 laps there Quote
260DET Posted October 25, 2014 Posted October 25, 2014 Apparently some were at the recent Time Attack, no point in dragging all that aero around unless it earns it's keep. Apparently T1 is pretty intimidating and quite a few get it wrong so obviously it ain't easy. Quote
thriller Posted October 26, 2014 Posted October 26, 2014 Oh no, that's an expensive few pics Would have been a pretty sour feeling drive back home to Adelaide ! Quote
Ledge Posted October 26, 2014 Author Posted October 26, 2014 Yep bottom end is stuffed. Looks like the head is ok though. fingers crossed had better trips home from motorsport thats for sure Quote
260DET Posted October 26, 2014 Posted October 26, 2014 Nasty, very nasty. Looks like a lubrication failure. Quote
ZT-R Posted October 26, 2014 Posted October 26, 2014 Im on motor number 5 so don't feel bad. If that happened to you on dry sump I have no hope at all... Quote
nat0_240_chevZ Posted October 26, 2014 Posted October 26, 2014 Hi Bud, got any more pics of the main bearing girdle, just after removal? and did you find any key pieces of the piston skirts, from around the small end? indicating any failure in skirt or does it appear rod only? do your logs show any ign timing retardation prior to? and/or afr's issues prior? already it looks like your cradle was a 'passenger' after the failure, check out the harmonic marks its left on cap-face on #6 bearing (between 5&6) looks like the back end of your bearing girdle was a 'tuning fork'....... Bad news, and expensive none the less. Still appreciate the incar footage you still manage to provide, despite a day best left untold!! nat0 Quote
260DET Posted October 26, 2014 Posted October 26, 2014 The reason why I suggested a lubrication failure was because of obvious big end overheating and it's common with a lube failure to lock a bearing or two which then starts a chain of destruction which usually involves con rods. But a bit of a guess just going on pics of course. Any relevant data? Quote
Ledge Posted October 26, 2014 Author Posted October 26, 2014 HI Chaps Yeah its a crap situation. Culmination of few issues. They are all getting solved so we will move on. Oil related for sure tho Cheers Paul Quote
Gordo Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 That's a bummer. So it's a bigger job than you would have liked. Quote
Brabham Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 Will you do a 30/26 for your next engine Paul or is it not worth it? Awesome sounding car though before the troubles. Quote
Ledge Posted October 27, 2014 Author Posted October 27, 2014 Gordo, yeah its shagged mate. If im lucky it will just need new short motor. Brabham, 30 is not the right thing for my car. Going billet 28 stroker Sir Peter Mc has got he job Cheers Paul Quote
Gordo Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 If Peters got the job your in good hands. You Know it's going to be bigger and better. Quote

Brabham Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 Where does the block come from Paul, is it based on an RD28? Looking forward to seeing it take shape, will there be another jump in the power figures for this one? Cheers Quote
