Hello Melbournians (or Melbournites?),

I've been down in 'Mexico' for a bit over 3 months now, and my ACT rego runs out in June. As I'm living in Brunswick I'm close to everything and rarely drive me Z around. Also being a student means that $600+ rego could be better used on maintenance & servicing, so I'm thinking of Club Plates.

I've read a few threads on here, and I understand that AusZCar/VicZcar is not a club that would sanction club plates by Vic Roads? If I'm correct, what would be the best way for me to get my Z on Club Plate's, to be used on the odd occasion to AusZcar BBQ's/meets and (hopefully not too often!) the mechanic/Lurch!!!

Sorry if these are dumb questions, this is the first time I've had to put a restrictive rego on a car.

Thanks!

Firstly, you have to join a club that has CH or H approval from Vicroads, there are quite a few so you can shop around. Then you can either get a RWC or a letter from the club "inspector" for approval then you can get your plates. The only thing though is you can't use the car for Auszcar events unless they are advertised in the club magazine your are with. For repairs to the car, you can take it anytime as long as you can prove it; not at 3am after a night out on a Sunday! Taking it to an Auszcar meeting is pretty much a gamble.

And don't forget that each year when the rego falls due you will have to have the club secretary or authorised member sign off on it to prove that you are still a financial member of the club. Unlike Queensland where you can just renew it.

New rules due mid this year is finally the log book system where you can use it for whatever you want for a maximum of 90 days of the year.

Don't get caught thogh as the penalties will be stiffer than a teenage boy watching "Showgirls".

So if I was visiting Lurch for some rust issues (none yet, but expect the worst!), and I get pulled over and my following words are "I'm visiting Lurch, he's fixing my dogleg...", is this enough or do I need to have some sort of paper trail that a cop can verify?

Lurch or Sulio I might contact either of you personally soon as I need to sort this out. I might come to the bbq in Feb if I have work off, I'll do my best as I haven't met the 'Mexico' crew yet!!!

No worries Josh - the BBQ is on the 28th of THIS MONTH though (Jan.)

It's quite a straight fwd process to get on the 'H' plates ;)

in the january ndsoc magazine its talk of a 90 day annuall permit scheme , states your vehicle requires you to fill out a log book and gives you 90 days unlimited use, does unlimited use mean just that or is a ch permit holder still restricted to ndsoc events only ? i hate this topic, i handed my ch plates in for year round freedom  someone needs to state all of the rules and regulations applied to ch permit holders instead of making rules up as they go along,

I've been waiting for this 90 day annual log book permit scheme to come in to Vic,

From the information I have found it should mean that you fill in the logbook provided and you can use the car for what ever you like.

I'm not 100% sure on the details, maybe someone here has some more info?

yeah great as there needs a lot more focus placed on this issue , you have to check this out thouroughly before you decide what level or category of registration in vic suits you

Reading the attached link Mossy attached they have late 2010 as an anticipated start date. I really hope they do make it happen this time, there has been talk of this happening in Vic for years now so I won't hold my breath but it would be a pleasant suprise. I heard some where that in the UK such rego is free as the owner of such vehicles is seen as "preserving history and heritage" in some way and the running costs of enthusiats can be high running multiple cars. It would be nice of Vic Authorities to look at it the same way. Anyhow fingers crossed! I'm on historic plates and a member of the GCC who have an event on every weekend.

Yeah I'll check it out Daniel when they have all the final details sorted, I know I won't drive the car more than 90 days a year so it sounds perfect for me. I definetly wouldn't go with the current system, but if I had the freedom to just go for a cruise by myself without having to say I'm going to a club event or something is great, I'd save a lot on rego ;)

I for one can't wait for it to kick in..90 days a year is almost twice a week being allowed to drive the zed for whatever reason! I've heard as long as it's written in the log book, it's fine.

Does anyone know when this is in effect? My rego is up for renewal at the end of the month, I only use the car on the weekend or for events so would be ideal!!

I am definately going club plates. I contacted NDSOC and have the paper work, just have to organise a time  for the club to view the car.

When the new scheme finally comes in, it will be an incentive to drive my car more often.

Do you need to have a R.W.C for club permit????  i think its a bit strange that a certain person has not added any comments to this topic, I " SAY" MMMMM strange boy strange , this is what im talking about, no conformation just rumors making rules up as you go along, dont be surprised that there is a dramatic increase in club permit fees, if this does go a head let the system settle in before registering your vehicle in it as you may find it difficult to get it back on normal reg.  Dazzed

I take it Daniel you are referring to me, you could just ask what the rules are instead of trying to create more dissention......please remember this is a public forum.

The AOMC requirements on issuing permit plates are very clear, you can either obtain a RWC or have a letter of safety compliance issued by the particular club (This is at the club's discretion on weather they will issue letters of safety) .

Some clubs insist on a RWC, other clubs such as the NDSOC can issue letters of safety compliance for standard vehicles or those with minimal modifications in lieu of a RWC (after an inspection by our club scrutineer).

Our club scutineer has the discretion to ask for a RWC if he believes the car to be unsafe or too modified.

In line with the AOMC guidelines, the NDSOC now requires engineers certificates for all engine swaps outside of the original family fitted (eg L24 to L28 is permitted, L series to RB or SR etc must have engineers cert).

There is absolutley no ambiguity with the NDSOC requirements and it is published in the permit plate requirements letter for all members or prospective members to read, all members must comply with the same rules .

On the subject of the future 90 day log book, the AOMC and Vic Roads have made no additional requirements outside of those already in force (to date anyway). The 90 day scheme is scheduled for the end of the year with current permit plates rolled over to the 90 day log book on there renewal.

The NDSOC has 55 Permit plate holders amoung the 304 members (as at December 2009) who enjoy the benefits of the current scheme within the rules stipulated by the AOMC and Vic Roads  (yes there are limitations of use which will be overcome when the 90 day scheme comes into play which is great as the club will not be at risk of loosing it's Permit Plate "licence" if members abuse the privilage)

I will certainly be puting my Zed on a 90 day log book as soon as it comes into play as there are no "club use only " restrictions as there are now.

Any questions feel free to PM me

I was informed by a technical roads department adviser at vic roads that vehicles that had an engine fitted other than the origonal configuration were not eligable for ch rego ,is this the case, an engineers report should be required for any engine swap anyway, can you shed some light on that ,thanks Allan

The AOMC manual allows the issuing club some discretion in determining what are significant modifications, the NDSOC has allowed some leaway for L series upgrades......I can send you the manual if you wish PM me you email address.

These guidelines have been in place for many years and it clearly states that engine swaps of same family and era are acceptable up to 10% increase capacity.

Engine swaps from 4 to 6 or 6 to 8 require an engineers report.

If your Zed has an L28 it will be fine for a Permit without an engineers report.
