Hey guys, I'm in Brisbane, and currently employed of course, though I'm looking for a career change. Does anyone know of openings at all? I don't have any particular skills, but i have worked in retail, manufacturing, run my own business, and I'm currently in the paint industry, I'm willing to learn anything.

Thanks.

I suppose I could send you $3 for Saturdays paper, I'm sure you'll find something that meets your particular criteria.....or perhaps wander down to the local  employment agency, stand in line and tell your tale, I'm certain they will get a laugh as well.....especially after what so many have endured...

Bad day much?

To the OP, you really need to give it some thought and try to get some direction. Its no good taking suggestions that will determine the next number of years of your life from people on the net who know nothing about you. It is never to late to change.

I'm with Jeff on this one.. It's hard enough to keep the job you have.

There's allot of people out there looking for work with a sh$t load more experience than you that can't get work, My brother is married with 2 kids and in the process of losing his house to the bank, Mechanic by trade, 15 years in the local government more tickets you can poke a stick at and just got knocked back by bunnings hardware store for being over qualified.

Stick to the job you have untill you find a new one that 100% for sure, cause it's tough out there and count your lucky stars you can pay your bill's, feed the kid's and play with your Zed.

Good luck on you search.. ;)

Should have called this thread "Help need life lesson" :). On a serious note IT work is frustrating but rewarding too.

You can work from anywhere in the world provided you have an Internets connection ;).

If I wasn't in IT, I'd consider doing what Lurch is doing right now, working on Zeds and restoring old cars. I'm sure fixing old cars isn't the most lucrative business but I think I would go home happy and at the end of the day that's what counts.

I must be lucky, i have never had any trouble what so ever finding work

i have knocked back two job offers in the last 6 months  and have never been out of work for more than a month.

I think it comes down to how bad you want a job

Thanks for the support guy's. Who said i could afford to pay the bill's and support my family on my wage I'm currently on? I guess it's always fun to have a laugh at some one else's expense. There is always a better job for everybody out there, and I'm still looking.

If anyone know's of job openings etc please let me know.

I think there must be a lot of people out there looking. I called two employment agencies a month ago, left messages, and I'm still waiting for a call back. Needless to say, I won't be contacting those agencies again, but in a way, it is probably a good indicator that they are inundated with candidates. I never left any details about myself, so they had no clue who or what I was, so I know tat is not the reason they didn't call back. I have been self employed for the past 11 years, but it is not challenging enough on a day to day basis and I need more to occupy my time. I would love to get involved in a restoration business, although with 12 cars of my own, finding time to dedicate to customers might be bit of a problem !

As much as it is showing some initiative to put your request out there, perhaps this is not the right forum to do it - especially when you have not narrowed the field down to something that you really want to do - as opposed to just a job that perhaps pays more. In the end, it is not about the money - it is feeling that you want to get up in the morning and go to a job you love doing.

I think the best thing to do is imagine what you would love to do if education, money and other things were not in the way.

For me I'd love to get a commercial pilots license and do that for a career, have been saving for a while now so I might just go and do the training some day. I've even considered selling the Z to be able to do that as a career, but I love my Z too much.

I guess my point is, go for the job that you would love to do and don't let others tell you its too late or its unreasonable if you really want something you will find a way to get there.

I hated IT for a while back there, then I landed a job at Google and I must say I really enjoy working at Google right now and I really enjoy what I do. I could find higher paying jobs, but as Aegean said I wake up in the morning and look forward to coming in and seeing my work colleagues (I can actually call them friends).

I still get a case of the Monday's at times, but its not the "fear" I used to get on a Sunday night.

Life is what you make of it. It's up to the individual to go out and look for jobs, earn respect and move up the ladder. So if you want a change be persistent in your search regardless of what others say. God knows I have been put down by many people (Would love to see the pricks now, ha). Often to find a new job you have to apply for 100 or more to find the right one. I know I have done this a number of times before I landed one. But you have to fight to get somewhere and ignore the negatives, pick your self up and keep going. Only the persistent people get to the top of the ladder.

There endith lifes lesson for today.  :)

I'd consider doing a trade if I had my time again, but there is no way I am giving up my job to do a prerequisite apprenticeship now.

Considering all manufacturing industry in Australia is declining, services are the where the job security will be in my opinion.

Have you considered getting more education?

Perhaps University, Tafe or even an apprenticeship/traineeship.

It will be a pay cut now, but you have to think long term with education. In the long run it will pay off.

it wouldn't be a pay cut for me.. im earning less than those on the dole.. it would be an increase for me.

I was looking at a sparky, though.. getting in, no chance..

I also would like to do mobile electronic installations, i have plenty of experience in that field.

There are multiple ways to get into degrees.

My wife did a year of tafe to get herself into her university degree.

Where there is a will, there is a way.

Good luck.

I did a 6 month prevocational course in automotive.

I recommend looking up the tafe website and seeing what prevocational courses are available. It  will double your chances of getting in to a trade

Back to the original post...

have you considered a trade in the bld industry ?

simple trades that you learn quickly on the job & can pay very well..such as installing gyprock or stopping, wetsealing & waterproofing or even laying tiles pays very well...If you where only in Canberra  :P

Ok.  If you want to have a job where there is always demand for more employees, especially when the economy is down, then security is a good option.  I don't mean being a bouncer, i mean sitting at a desk as concierge and making anything from $40k up to $60k and more depending on the company/site etc.  I cleared $56k last year and although, no its not the biggest pay check in the world, it is a steady, reliable income.  Its not expensive and doesn't take long to get one, just gotta have a clean record from the cops.
