I have been so busy lately that the Zed has had to wait, however that all changed today when I got out there and sanded, paint stripped, wire brushed (this is a bare metal respray) and etch primed half of the zed.  the great news is no surprises and almost rust free body...I've got a very large smile about that! ;D...this week my nocturnal activities will turn to the doors which also will go back to bare metal...I'm actually amazed at how much i got done...I'm motivated again!

Lurchos...Is nothing sacred? For anyone that doesn't know Lurch offered me free welding if I would pull a stupid face...of course I obliged!

Hey Rev,

What kind of etch primer do you use? Spray can stuff? What is the difference between normal primer and etch primer? Cheers.

The etch is designed to do just that...etch onto/into bare metal compared to primer which sits on top of the substrate.  I then sand back to metal anywhere I need to fill.  the etch primarily is to protect the metal and give a good key for subsequent coats.

A little more progress today.  Since I have the guards off I wire brushed everything then treated with Epoxy rust etch, no major rust was found it was pretty clean.  What I did find though  was a rubber drain pipe that leads from the area under the windscreen wipers (I call it a scuttle panel?) and exits under the front guards, they were clogged with about 2 cups of dirt in each!. It got me thinking though, when they drain rain that water hits the inside of the guard and dribbles down to the bottom where all guards rust out!  I'm going to gloss epoxy the inside of my guards so they are completely water proof or attach a fitting to a small tube and have the outlet slightly exiting from the underside of the guards.

Also got into the rear hatch latch panel which I should have all fixed up by this time tomorrow!

Loui, the cold was to keep me going!! and thanks Mick for the encouragement.  I'm still fluctuating between 2 colors with my window of opportunity getting smaller to make the choice.  I should have all the bodywork dome by Christmas with color in January.

WOW! Just WOW!

You move so fast! I have 33 days off work from this coming wednesday (first holiday in nealy 3 years) and reading your thread has lit a fire under me!

Cheers for the motivation!

Rev, nice work.

Forgive a (stupid) question from a bloke who knows nothing, but ...

The bits that you have welded (or it looks like brazed) on the rear hatch/brace.  Did you make them from scratch or are they cut from a donor?

While I'm displaying my ignorance, what did you use to strip the body?  paper or chemical?  What grade of paper or what brand of chemical?

That's enough from me for a while.

Again, looks good.

Hi, there's no real stupid questions when it comes to reno's.  These panels were welded with a mig welder, one of the panels where the hatch sill is I used a replacement panel which I cut sections from to replace.  The other pieces I made up myself from metal.  I stripped the whole car with paint stripper, I buy one for super cheap in a 4l can it works great.  Just make sure you don't let it dry on the metal and it is all thoroughly cleaned down and then prep sol washed before you attempt to put any etch primer on.  Hope this helps.

Yes it helps a lot.  Does 4 litres do the whole car?  I assume it it done outside as it is probably quite messing?

I can't wait until I actually have a Zed.  I'm like a kid in a candy shop, and giving my wife the sharts.

Yep! 4 lt will normally do it unless it has multiple layers of paint.  Buy some cheap bunnings drop sheets put it under the car and go for it.  When you're finished scoop up the plastic and get rid of it!

dont forget when you after you have applyed the stripper to cover it with a plastic drop sheet and let it sit for about half an hour.

Oh and scratch up the paint surface nice and good before you start
