I asked Nzeder about these... I have two bolt holes in the rear shelf of my 240Z that appear exactly between the rear strut towers, and about 1 inch forward of the spare wheel well.

I do not know what these are for, but they have been there for a very long time, as they seem to have held in two plates (about 2 by 3 inches each) whose shape are indented into the tar-based floor covering. In the following photo if you look just ahead of the wheel well you can see them...

Anybody got ANY clues what they are ??? There were no bolts in the holes when I bought the car, nor were there any brackets. I was thinking they might have been used to hold the diff up or some such thing ... but this was NOT on my last car (albeit that was 10 yrs ago).

Do I get them welded up ???

Mine doesn't. They were probably put there to mount something. Sub woofer, fuel pump underneath???

I seem to remember mine having straps for holding the spare wheel down somewhere in the back, will have to see if I can find a photo....

*edit* the straps picked up just behind the toolboxes, mine didn't have holes in the spot where yours does.

These are definitely not the holes for the straps that are used in the cargo area ... they are also there in their rightful place.

The bizarre thing about these holes is the fact they Look like they were factory added, because of the depth of the indents in the tar based covering .. alternatively, they were added at a later point and bolted down tight such that the brackets sank into the tar based sealer.. in reality they could have been in there for 37yrs I guess.

Another thought ,,, they don't appear to have been used for any sort of roll-cage as there is no evidence of any such cage anywhere else at all inside the car (either welded or bolted)

i'd like to have them filled, but in really don't want to if they were infact there for a reason.

There is a bracket with thread in the spare tyre well. Then there is a bolt that goes through the spare wheel to hold it down.

The straps you mention are for luggage to stop them flying around while you do 200Kmph around some mountain bend. :)

I don't think the 240 had the straps though. Mine certainly didn't. There is absolutly no where for them to attach

Right ...thats interesting, because I also have one of those large bolts that is used to screw into the wheel well to hold down the wheel. Also. if these are the strap holes in FRONT of the wheel, where might the corresponding holes be at the REAR of the wheel well to join to? My car only has these two holes, and none at the rear of the wheel well?

just pop some bolts through. From the inside of the car it will look like they are attaching something under the car. I have done this to attach my fuel pump. Just to the side of where your holes are.

in my humble opinion , these are not factory.

I just checked mine which is factory virgin...and I dont have these, and the luggage tie downs are 20cm away & it has nothing to do with spare wheel tie downs..

got me stumped  :P

You know what I think I might know what they are for - a Tow Bar :) yes they made them for the zeds - mine had one fitted when I got (I still have it - but it mounts differently I think but the bar did go under the fuel tank and join up by the diff area) I have a photo of my zed somewhere with a horse float on the back when I took the now wife and the horse to a ODE when the normal tow car (now Father-inlaw's HQ wagon) was out of action.

So my guess is it could have been a towbar mount that was installed when the car new or near new all that time ago which is what it looks like it has been there a long time/almost factory

Well Done Mike .... I actually thought that could be the case and the next thing I was planning to do was get up underneath her to have a look for any other evidence of this ... Its got to be this, as I say it looks very factory (especially the indentation) and the bolt holes are very large, implying the requirement for strength in that area ..

Nat will be welding it up !!

Thanks everyone for you help ... Really appreciate it.

Cheers

Good call.  Although I'm surprised mine didn't seem to have holes there in that case, as mine also had a towbar - maybe my photos are just not clear enough.

My 73 had a toebar fitted but they somehow managed to bolt it to the bumper and the moustache bar. Who thought towing in a Zed was a good idea?

Z are great for towing I tow spas behind mine all the time.I must take a photo of it what else would your use a tow bar for ?  ::)other than damaging small children knee caps

I found these hole in my zed, worked out they were holes for the tow bar, and then it clicked.

Every time I turned the shell over (It's on a roatisery) I could hear something loose sliding and moving around in the chassis rail,

It was the tube's that were used for the bolt support in the chassis for the tow bar mount were left still in there, loose. 5min later and a magnet and no more noise.

Two of my zeds had towbars when purchased, and it was the first thing that came off. Donation to Sims Metal

dough i wan ta tow bar on mine.

1. reason so i can bring stuff in my box trailer.

2. killing my neighbourhood kids knee caps. sick of their hands all over the car.

3. stoping wankers trying to park close to the car.

4. to save the rear bar. it cost me too much.

lol

Well my zed and others I have seen have some holes but they are meant to be there and you are meant to have plugs for them something to do with water removal I think.

Defiantly tow bar. My first 240z had one. You can even see the outline of the flat bar that sat ontop to stop the bolt heads pulling through the floor.

this appears to be solved, but another option might be some dodgy harness mounts.

Too low for harness mounts; they are not allowed to be on that much of an angle. Strut brace across the rear towers is the only option. Towing with a zed must be common...always see a 260 2+2 with a trailer around Murrumbeena train crossing...poor zed!
