chartoo Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 Hi all. I'm doing the door skins on my car and im chasing any tips or ideas that are specific to zeds. Ive done the tafe panel course and ive found a really good sticky for a mustang doors but any other tips will be appreciated. Quote
nizm0zed Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 i dont have any tips, but i have read that mustang door skin thing. It doesnt seem to hard, and i'll be attempting this myself on a drivers door if i cant find a straight enough one soon. Quote
zzzzed Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 dont hammer it flat leave it in a sort of tear drop shape, Keep the hammer nice and flat. I could go on but its to late and i need sleep Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted February 12, 2009 Moderators Posted February 12, 2009 I remember ROb from the Z factory made a tool out of a large flatblade screw driver to lift up the folded lip of the door skin for removal. It was heated and the tip bent into a "J" shape, but a tight radius almost like a hook. It gets under the skin and lifts up so then the door skin can be removed and the door frame sand blasted etc without damage to the skin. Hope there's something useful for you! Quote
nuclear_z Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Removing the skin When I was working do resto's and such, I found the easiest thing was to use a grinder around the edge of the skin until it just breaks through to the door panel... Do this around the edge until you can lift the one peice of the door skin off... Then carefully peel the metal lip off the other side... Replacing the skin... Place the skin on in the right position and use multigrips to lock in place... Then its just a matter of careful hammer and dolly to tap the edge over... On the corners it might be necessary to slice the skins with a thin grinder disk sould you can get the shape right.... Quote
V8Datto Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 This is Rob at ZFactory's door skin tool in action Only two welds to cut, one at each end, slowly bend the skin off at an even rate. And the skin can and was reused Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted February 12, 2009 Administrators Posted February 12, 2009 Awesome, hopefully Rob can share more cool body work tips . Quote
C.A.R. Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 I thought that lip was spot welded on?! Quote
XRQTR Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 If you're re using the skin then the hook is obviously the best way, however you need to be very patient, it's easy to disform a panel in you're too rough with it all, you'll find yourself using alot of filler when you go to replace the skin. With the availability of skins I don't see the point in re using them, nuclear-z is spot on, using a broad grinding disk (not a cutting disk) lightly grind away the edge of the fold until it removes the fold itself. You will see when it's gone through as the two sections will lightly seperate, that's why I said do it lightly because if you heat them up too much they can fuse together and you willbe grinding right back to the other side of the door. If it's a replacement, grind away. Quote
V8Datto Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 I'm no panel beater and I took those door skin's off myself in about 10 min, very very easy. Had inside & out sandblasted and Rob put it all back together. I actually bought two new door skin for a lot of $$$ which Rob refused to use. He said the line's were different in the shape and wouldn't line up with the car. Here is some pic's of the door reassembled Quote
Kent Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 any idea where the good panels came from? Quote
zzzzed Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 oh yes i have come across a lot of dodgy replacement panels in my time Quote
Kent Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 so where are the good ones from? i was goi to get a set from rare spares.. but am i better going elsewhere? Quote
C.A.R. Posted February 14, 2009 Posted February 14, 2009 AllZparts in Sydney has them, don't they? Quote
V8Datto Posted February 14, 2009 Posted February 14, 2009 I'm not sure where the replacement panels come from, but they don't come from nissan. From what Rob said to me was, you can reshape them to fit but it's more work. If your door skins are rusted beyond repair it's your only option any way. My door skins had a few rust holes and one was damaged due to an car accident at some point " picture below" , after I got them off they changed shape and distorted, I thought they were throw away jobs. This is just before Rob put them back together, a bit of work went into straightening this out tho He did a awesome job, really happy with how the door's came out Quote
warrenz Posted February 14, 2009 Posted February 14, 2009 I used the ones from All Z Parts in Sydney. My panel beater had to build up the curved section at the top front of the door as the gap was way to big. I think they are made in Taiwan. Originally I was trying to buy the rust repair lower sections from Tabco in the US but I could only get one side and from what I have read they are not any easier to get now. http://www.tabcobodyparts.com/index.html Warren Quote
chartoo Posted February 18, 2009 Author Posted February 18, 2009 i got mine throught rare spares at 275 a piece and they seem to be good qualitly. will see when ive fit them but ive lost my sand blasting gun dammit Quote
Kent Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 would be interested in hearing how the rare spares ones work out (unless someone else knows of another brand that is available and matches perfectly) Quote
