NZeder Posted September 10, 2009 Author Posted September 10, 2009 Popped out to the shed to work on the car tonight (still need to get power hooked up so I can spend longer out there) anyway the best things with my new setup is the hub locator rings. I recommend this to anyone who take wheels on and off a car regularly. It is soooooo nice to lift the wheel line up the lugs and push the wheel onto the centre ID and have the wheel stay put while you put the nuts on. No more of that bottom of the wheel tipping and having to fight with the wheel again this time when you have the nuts in your hand. So I recommend the following to all those racers 1. Make sure all your rims have the same centre ID 2. If you have some different make them all the same 3. Have some centre locating rings made and press these onto your hubs/stubs. 4. Did I mention how great it is to just place the wheel on the lugs and centre ID and then bolt it. 4. Did I mention how......yes I did. I had the same done to the front hubs, I had the lower edge machined down just a little (there is enough metal there for this) so there was a good true machined face the size of the new ID ring that was then pressed onto front hub. Both front and rear now have these locating ID rings that are matched to the RS Watanabes centre ID of 73.5mm (I believe this is the same as the Rota RB too) This is one mod I have done that I just love so far and I have only taken the wheels off 2 or 3 times. NZeder Posted November 20, 2009 Author Posted November 20, 2009 Ok looks like a long time between updates - 2 months. Well what has happened to the car - not a lot at all. Work has had me oversea's a few times and then there was the Targa Rally here in NZ (I pit crew on a E36 BMW M3 EVO 3.2 - my mate Ricky with the BRE 240z racecar is the co-driver/navigator). So anyway after much thought and sleepless nights my zed is now at fabrication shop getting a 1/2 cage installed. I did consider a full cage but given my car will be dual purpose for now I did not want the hassle of keeping it road legal with a full cage (many hoops to jump through here in NZ - well not that bad, you have to have a competition seat and at least 4 point harness and 2 two events each year, these have to entered into the log book so you can keep a current Motorsport Authority Card which cost a set fee each year - anyway I just don't have the budget for a full cage and the new seats currently so that will have to wait for a year or so down the road - I just want to get this back on the road over the xmas/new year period). Anyway with a 1/2 cage none of this applies - unless you put in the harness. However also with a 1/2 cage you can still use a standard 3 point lap-sash belt with a competition seat also. You just have to have the modification certified by an engineering which I have to do anyway for the brakes, suspension and engine mods I have done - so might as well have the 1/2 done at the same time too + I will feel a bit safer when I am on the track doing time trails/dual car sprints. I will post pics of the cage install as soon as it is complete (this will happen while I am oversea's again next week). Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted November 20, 2009 Moderators Posted November 20, 2009 With your update i was hoping to see finished pics! But oh well..we'll have to wait a bit more. Cage will suit it real well. Quote
C.A.R. Posted November 20, 2009 Posted November 20, 2009 Blasted work always gets in the way of Zed work! Your not alone Mike... Quote
NZeder Posted November 27, 2009 Author Posted November 27, 2009 Ok collected the car today from Herbert Fabrication and Engineering (racecarfab.co.nz) after having the half cage built and installed. Result just what I asked for nice and tight, Motorsport New Zealand legal, so now for the painting again - and to touch up the inside - yes I know I should have had it done before it was painted but I wanted it out of the brothers shop and he was painting the car + he would not be happy that I have installed a half cage - but it is my car right. Anyway here are the pics. Quote
C.A.R. Posted November 27, 2009 Posted November 27, 2009 What the heck Mike?! Seamed pipe & Mig welds?!?! Ewww..... Quote
NZeder Posted November 27, 2009 Author Posted November 27, 2009 What the heck Mike?! Seamed pipe & Mig welds?!?! Ewww..... Well chromemolly is out of the budget for one. And number 2 they have a habit of cranking at the welds over time + the local rules = same size pipe anyway = 38.1mm 2.5mm thick min. Quote
zzzzed Posted November 27, 2009 Posted November 27, 2009 i noticed you have a powerbuilt tool kit. Are you happy with it? I have the same kit and think it was grate value for money Quote
NZeder Posted November 27, 2009 Author Posted November 27, 2009 i noticed you have a powerbuilt tool kit. Are you happy with it? I have the same kit and think it was grate value for money Good eyes - and yes good value for money - now all I need is the power on my shed so I can work on the car at night - I have been waiting for my mate to join to the mains for 6 months now - so might just have to get a sparky in to do it Quote
C.A.R. Posted November 27, 2009 Posted November 27, 2009 Sorry Mike - I know it's not 4130, but it just doesn't look like CDS to me either. I spy a seam in that pipe... BTW I also have a 300pc Powerbuilt toolkit. I'm VERY pleased with the quality & price. I believe it's also made in NZ? Quote
zzzzed Posted November 27, 2009 Posted November 27, 2009 i cant remember how many pice my power built kit is and i dont think i am going to go out and count them, but it has one extra large draw to what NZeder's has. I also fot the tool trolley for the chest to sit on. I have had the kit for 4 years and use it every day and havnt had one thing brake yet. I cant say the same for my sidchrome ratchet spaners Quote
NZeder Posted November 27, 2009 Author Posted November 27, 2009 Lurch you might be right it does look to have a seam so not CDS I will check the paper work after tjis weekend race meeting Quote
acf321 Posted November 28, 2009 Posted November 28, 2009 Nice work Mike ... Me thinks the Hornet needs one of those now !!!!! Quote
NZeder Posted December 31, 2009 Author Posted December 31, 2009 Ok 1 month later time for an update. 1. Cleaned and reinstalled the fuel line and rear brake lines (I don't recommend doing that in a hurry - those lines are tricky to say the least.) 2. Cleaned and re-wrapped (in the places that needed it) the stock loom and installed - yet to clip some of it down. Now time to work on connecting up the RB engine loom, upgrade the fuse link to Plug-in Fuse/circuit breakers, create a relay board/box around this location also for [*]Head light relay [*]Fuel pump relay [*]ECU relay [*]Other relays I see fit for power circuits 3. Cage has been painted Not a lot really but family things around this time of year have keep me busy. Tomorrow off to the olds place to collect more parts (were I was living when the car came to bits) so I can keep installing parts, ie pedal box, rear loom, I might collect the dash and centre console - but the focus is looms and other under car/under engine bay so I can install the motor. C.A.R. Posted December 31, 2009 Posted December 31, 2009 4. Install lights into your f*#king garage so you can work at night! Quote
NZeder Posted December 31, 2009 Author Posted December 31, 2009 4. Install lights into your f*#king garage so you can work at night! lights installed, sockets installed, wiring all run, just need my mate with the ticket to connect to the mains Quote
NZeder Posted January 1, 2010 Author Posted January 1, 2010 well ended up with 95% of the parts from the olds house now in the shed with the zed Only the dash, rear window/hatch glass, original engine + carbs, wiperarms and headlights left there (not enough room in the hi-n-dry sonata company car) Quote
NZeder Posted April 6, 2010 Author Posted April 6, 2010 ok so been a while since I did an update. Not a lot of work to report. 13 years of storage = every part I go install needs to be restored or replaced Good news is the shed now has power and lights I also picked up a set of Genuine RB26DE headers from an Autech RB26DE. The engine was on trademe some 12-15 months ago and I was tempted to purchase it $3999 but I already had my 25/26 hybrid. I really only wanted the genuine headers. Anyway the guy that did purchase it in the end put a turbo on it so listed the headers on trademe for $500 NZD or $370 AUD in the current FX rate. The headers arrived at work today but I am off with a virus so will not see them until I am better and go into the office. But here are some pics I got from the original seller of the engine and the headers in the ad Quote
garvice Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 but I am off with a virus It is a pain when you are off work with a "Virus" (Zed virus?) and the parts you need while working on your virus arrive at work. DAM! HA. Headers look great, but are they actually welded at the flange? I can only see one tack at the top of each runner, are they welded on the engine side of the flange? Quote
NZeder Posted April 7, 2010 Author Posted April 7, 2010 will let you know when I see for the first time myself Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted April 7, 2010 Moderators Posted April 7, 2010 Very yummy hardware there Mike! similar to the Rocky Auto zeds in a way. Quote
