Its a few weeks overdue but here goes!  I've been a Zedophile in denial for about 8 years now, and I guess purchasing one is the first step of many to recovery.

I bought Paul's (from Zbits at Walloon) old daily 260Z 2+2 with FUNCTIONING (!!!) electric sunroof.  Considering it hadn't been started in 18 months it ran quite well with 0 advance and tickle of aerostart to get it fired up.  It has a few pieces missing (door locks, chrome strips), presumably in Paul's big stock pile.

Here are a few pics of the zed fresh off the car trailer.

The plan is a street high performance build from the ground up.  It's very handy when your best mate, who we will call 'Jim' :P, that you've know since girls had germs and cooties, owns a parts store and workshop and also is a dattophile into 1600s.  At this stage the basic list looks something like this:

- San marino blue paint (350Z colour code)

- half cage

- ZG flares

- L31 ('Jim' has donated an L28, sourced a kiwi LD28 crank)

- front spoiler (waiting on Len Brennan for a quote)

- modify struts with coil-over sleeves

Thats it for now,

I certainly am a QLDer.

Over the last few weeks I've learned some key bits of advice when it comes to managing your relationship with your zed and your partner.  I'm lucky in the sense that the missus has a good sense of humour.  Here are two instances where I spoke before I thought.

I get home from work and say, 'I'm going out to the shed to play with the zed"

Missus, "but I haven't seen you all day!"

Me, "well the Zed hasn't seen me all week!"

Another instance discussing the zed over tea, the missus says, "I can't believe I have to compete with a car for your attention"

Me, "there is no competition, the car has already won"

As I said, thank god my lovely missus (if she's reading this haha) has a sense of humour and we laughed it situations off.

Anyway, he is some progress pics taken last weekend.  All the carpets and fibre sound deadening is out and I almost had the dash out last night.

Great to see another zed resurrect.

In your rundown you didnt note the induction. Carbs EFI ? ITB's ? Please say a triple carb + l31. I know the fuel cost will be huge but you owe it to us. ;D

Gonna be great.

Triple webers all the way!  20L/100km economy isn't really that bad :D.....  I can't think of any other NA induction sound that can put a horn on a jellyfish like webers can and I'm trying to keep it somewhat authentic 8).  'Jim' is currently negotiating with his datsun contacts for a set, less manifold, for $800, so fingers crossed!

Bit of an update.  Almost all the sound deadening is out.  Couple of rusted spots through the floor pan, nothing that can't be fixed.  I don't have any photos as I've been working on it at night hours and the lighting ain't too good, I have Sunday off so I'll try and get some pics.  Only the engine and the heater/AC left to remove.  I've been suming up my engine options.  The car has matching numbers so I'm comtemplating keeping the original L26 in it.  I have no idea, are matching numbers important to anyone other than collectors?  The L28 I have access to is an F54/N42 so an L31 is still tempting.  There is also the option of something a little newer, perhaps, RB26DETT.  It's pretty much up in the air right now.  Whats "cooler"? An L26 bored and turbo'd or an NA L31?? 8)

Keep the L26 "on the side" and build any engine you want! I'm doing the RB25 thing, but if I had the $$$ a 3.1 stroker with ITB's or 45mm Webers would be the flavour of the month. Matching numbers is good if you ever want to make it back to showroom stock for a concourse etc. Build what you can afford and enjoy it!

His back seat is folded down. They fold down flat which is hand. Mind you the 260's came out in both 2 Seater and 2+2.

The folding seat won't be going back in, it'll be converted into storage for wine and cheese platers for those tours up in the hills for a picnic (long story, its a comprimise with the missus)

An update.

A co-worker made the comment that an old L series powered Zed would not be able to beat a GTR on the track (namely his).  Now like any self respecting Zed owner, you can't let someone get away with saying that, so its on, like DONKEY KONG!!  After chatting to my associate 1600 nut, we've decided to go down a different route.  The basic engine list is as follows:

- F54 block

- N42 Head

- L16 rods

- KA24 pistons

- to start with, second hand pair of VG30DETT or RB26DETT turbos

- Megasquirt

- stronger driveline (to future detail)

The idea is an L30ETT so to speak.  It yeilds a conrod/stroke ratio of about 1.68, which in theory should increase reliability and give some 'free' power.  The comp ratio will be somewhere 8.5-9:1.  I haven't had a chance to build something like this since the supercharged '94 tarago (I shit you not!!) that I worked on in uni.  I will keep you posted on the progress, feel free to comment.

;D nope you can't  let him get away with that. all the best cant wait to see that beast once its done.

Keep us updated on the build. I am sort of doing the same thing and will want to know what/where /how you did the MS ( MSNS ? I need all the help I can get )and the turbo install and fabrication. Before you get any fabrication work on intercooler piping etc PM me as I'll come in on a bulk/group buy sort of thing. Though i am would be going single turbo as all the dual turbo L28 stuff i have seen has been MASSIVELY expensive compared to the rb/sr swap.

Right!

An update, everything from the inside is out bar the steering column, handbrake and pedal box.  I had a hack tonight at the last bit of sound deadener until the cold got the better of me.  I went for a drive on the weekend in Jim's twin webered ol' skool L18 bored to 2L 1600 and OMFG, shame on me from wandering astray from the path of Weber enlightenment!!!  So its back to a weberfied L31.  I orded my LD28 crank from Jap diesel parts in NZ today so it should be here in a few weeks.  I've been looking at forged rods and I've only found two companies that make a L24 set, they being PPM (Oz based) and Carrillo.  Both look like they make a reasonable product.  In the meantime I'm going to look for a set of vented rotor Hilux calipers and try and get away with modified Mini cooper rotors.  Here are some pics!!

If that's all the rust you have, you’re REALLY lucky!!!

And the difference between the RPM conrods and the Carrillo's is like night & day.

Also CARR rod bolts are THE best in the world.

FWIW the STD Zed rods are capable of supporting around 160hp EACH. Makes you wonder if aftermarket rods are really needed...

I can confirm that an old L series Z can  ;D

Would you mind telling us what the LD28 crank cost?

There is a more rust at the doglegs and bottom of the A pillars from the sunroof drains where the water hasn't drained away properly.  Lots of cutting and welding....sigh.  While I'm there I'm going to try to incorporate an additional tubular metal drain in which I can plumb the sunroof drains into instead of leaving them flopping around in the chassis.

Thanks for the heads up on the conrods Lurch, I might begin another quest for elusive parts.

It cost me $290NZD for the crank and an additional $290NZD  :o in postage and handling.  It should be here by the end of next week, fingers crossed  ;D

Over and out!

Pissing My Self Laughing.....I hope my mrs never reads this forum. I will have to put one of these in my 2+2 ;D

P.S. You could re-route the A/C into your wine/cheese compartment and keep things nice and cool. (not that the A/C will be installed)

Our Nissan X-Trails have a A/C controlled cool/warm box and A/C cooled drink holders.

Got a call from my mate Jim today, said he had a wucked choice pressie for me from NZ turn up at the workshop.  So I went around in my lunchbreak.  I was so cranked up (ho ho ho bad joke I know!) and sure enough the LD28 crank had turned up!  Here is some photos for proof ;D.  Many thanks to Mark from Japanese Diesel Parts in Christchurch!

Well he got it cheaper than I got my LD28 crank. Mine was about $800 AU all up.

I get a MIG of my own this weekend so those few little rust spots will have to watch out  :P.  Body repair and prep will follow on straight after and hopefully it'll be ready to go to the painter mid September.

A bit of an update.

I've been a tad bit busy lately.  My lady friend and I bought a house so we've been running around like headless chooks for the past few weeks.

I got handy with the MIG and have repaired most of the panels.  I managed to strip the driver's side front quarter back to bare metal and etch prime it.  Thank god for those grinder pads that are like pot scourers.  The rest of the front panels are almost ready for priming.

A good mate was cleaning out his shed and found a few bits I might be interested in.  So far the list includes 2 RB20DET engines, 2 extra RB20DET heads, an RB20DET gearbox and a few boxes of random RB20 stuff.  He's still finding stuff that he doesn't need.  And all he wanted was $900!!  I took the CRS mounting kits that I bought earlier (which I could have made for half the price!! No offence CRS) and everything lined up so we'll see what develops  ;D

Hope you know what you are doing. i know of a lot of guys that used welders and the stripping disks on there cars and had to have a panel beater fix what they did. although if your doing floor you should be right.

well good luck god speed and all the best hope to here from you soon.
