blu260z Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 (edited) Thought I better start a write up on my 260z 2+2.Here goes...1976 260z 2+2, body is stock with rust in all the usual places, paint is very faded.Engine is stock. Was supposedly rebuilt in 2000 and garaged in 2001 where it sat till now. Carburetors where flat tops from a 4cly datsun , so where replaced with a 350cfm holley.Bit of background info on the car. The car was owned till the early 80s by the first owner then sold to the previous owner a female. The car was used as weekend / daily drive, the engine was rebuilt in 2000 and garaged in 2001 till now So hadn't been started in 14 years. I purchased the car without seeing it but with the help of the owner sending many pictures inside and out I put it on the back of a truck and it made the treck from Victoria to South Australia. At home in my shed I gave the carbies a clean, some fresh fuel and a battery and off she went ran little rough but it wouldnt help with the 4cyl carbies. As for now I have left engine work alone and concentrated on rust repair. Now for some pics The old girl back in the late 80s She looks a little bit rough now Some rust removal Edited September 7, 2017 by blu260z Quote
blu260z Posted March 25, 2015 Author Posted March 25, 2015 I am in the process of removing rust from behind the wheels and smoothing the rear bumper More pics to come Quote
oldmates260z Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 Looks like you are getting well into the panel work, hope you will not find anything too bad. Good luck! Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted March 25, 2015 Administrators Posted March 25, 2015 Nice work on the will rust repairs. I lime the welding blankets also. . I'd have thought you would need to use bracing before removing the sills or is it ok if the rest of the stru tire is there to hold it in place? Quote
blu260z Posted March 25, 2015 Author Posted March 25, 2015 Thanks guys the blankets are more just dust protectors but I think I might re cover the headliner in a similar pattern . I shouldnt have to remove as much of the sills on the drivers side. Only reason the passengers side had been crashed into a kerb or something and it was all bog filler. Quote
blu260z Posted March 31, 2015 Author Posted March 31, 2015 Just a bit of an update on project BLU. Switched the 4cyl flat tops with a 350cfm holley and intake manifold, which means changing to throttle cable instead of linkages. And installed my ebay aluminum radiator and some thermo fans. But enough of the fun stuff I Should probably get back to cutting rust. Here are some pics Quote
oldmates260z Posted March 31, 2015 Posted March 31, 2015 Always like the idea of the single down draft carbie, easy to tune and still gives good power and fuel efficient. Do you have it running with the Holley? Quote
blu260z Posted March 31, 2015 Author Posted March 31, 2015 Yea the holley runs great. It will be great when I can finally tune it on the road but other than that no complaints. Quote
blu260z Posted April 11, 2015 Author Posted April 11, 2015 Bumper rust all fixed and smoothed off. Many hrs of work welding in patches and smoothing Soon project BLU will turn into project RED with all the rust getting cut out Quote
oldmates260z Posted April 11, 2015 Posted April 11, 2015 Some very good work there, which RED will BLU be? Quote
blu260z Posted April 11, 2015 Author Posted April 11, 2015 No BLU will be staying blue :)it has the number plates BLU260 but the redoxide looks like its taking over the car Quote
Brabham Posted April 13, 2015 Posted April 13, 2015 Where do you get the red oxide from? Can you paint over it? Cheers Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted April 13, 2015 Moderators Posted April 13, 2015 Great to see another zed getting some lovin'. Nice work! Quote
blu260z Posted April 13, 2015 Author Posted April 13, 2015 @Brabham. Your local hardware should stock it. I am a fitter/fabricator so we use it at work. I will be sanding It back but its just protecting the raw steel while I do other stuff. Quote
blu260z Posted April 18, 2015 Author Posted April 18, 2015 Bit of an update, the rear has been smoothed and re assembled in waiting for the rest of the rust to be removed. I thats the passengers side of the car completed and now to start on the drivers side. Here is a few pics of the smoothed bumper after assembly and the rust damage on the drivers side :'( Quote
Scoota G Posted April 18, 2015 Posted April 18, 2015 Crusing along. Are you going to be able to get that center section of the bumper straight? I have one here that is very much straighter. Quote
blu260z Posted April 18, 2015 Author Posted April 18, 2015 I should be able to get it a little better I plan on filling the holes and re chromeing the bumpers. Quote
blu260z Posted May 10, 2015 Author Posted May 10, 2015 Ok after putting off the drivers side for weeks now I had to do something . My nightmare got worse when I started removing paint when I hit it with the grinder POOF in a cloud of dust half my dogleg and door jam vanished It was a previous rust repair I must say they done a great job with the bog because I Missed it completely. I started with this Ended up with this :'( But a little bit of cutting, bending, blending and belting I managed to re build the door jam and the dogleg. Also this is the chemical I have been treating all my panels with. The product is Chemsearch Chelade it is a rust converter that changes the properties of rust so it cannot keep rusting, it also prevents future rusting. I brush it on with a paintbrush wait for it to dry (dries dark blue/purple colour) then paint over it giving it that extra barrier of protection. Quote
reverendzed Posted May 10, 2015 Posted May 10, 2015 You've done a fantastic job! Well done! It just proves that if you eat the elephant one bite at a time you can really move your project along. Where did you buy the Rust Converter, I haven't seen that brand before. Cheers, Rev Quote
blu260z Posted May 10, 2015 Author Posted May 10, 2015 Thanks reverendzed I get it from work but you can buy it direct from chemsearch. Its 10x better than the supercheap stuff for rust prevention. It sets like a resin and only comes off if you scrape it with a screwdriver. Macdat 1 Quote
240z71 Posted May 10, 2015 Posted May 10, 2015 Hey mate How does that stuff compare price wise and protection wise with por 15 or rust bullet? Cant find prices anywhere online Quote
blu260z Posted May 10, 2015 Author Posted May 10, 2015 Price wise I am unsure, I would say more expensive. Protection wise 10/10 I have used it for a wile now and cannot fault it. Chemsearch it a very good company and make many top quality products. For example most people use WD40, RP-7 or CRC 5.56 for seized or rusted bolts they have nothing on chemsearch YEILD Its liquid gold. I am a mechanical fitter and yeild is my saviour Top quality company, top quality products Quote
blu260z Posted June 4, 2015 Author Posted June 4, 2015 Bit of an update. I have had a week off work and thought I get some work done on BLU.I have completed most of the rust repairs that where visible, so decided its time to start getting back to bare metal. I have been using a mix of paint stripper, heatgun, STIP-IT grinder discs and orbital sander to get it back and to be honest I was shitting myself about what I would find. The previous owner told me it had a respray a fair few years back and from what I found elsewhere someone had a go at "patching" rust. But to my surprise it wasn't that bad so here are some pics of the panel prep Quote
blu260z Posted June 4, 2015 Author Posted June 4, 2015 I have also installed a pertronix electronic ignition and coil. What a difference!! it starts much nicer now when cold and doesn't loose any power in the rev range. my future plans will be to spray the bare metal with an epoxy and put the body panels in storage for a bit. My intentions are while I have no pretty paint and no bonnet or guards I will do some work on the engine. Plans for the engine include removing the head and doing a port/polish, fitting a set of extractors and possibly putting in a higher lift cam. Also detailing the engine bay including paining the rocker cover and tidying up some of the vacuum lines and wiring. I then intend on working on suspension and brakes and then finally spraying her in original 307 blue And its as simple as that should be done in a week or 2 easy more like a year or 2 :'( Quote
blu260z Posted June 27, 2015 Author Posted June 27, 2015 So while stripping panels back to bare metal I figured I should find some side mirrors considering BLU only had one. Also so I know if I need to fill any holes where the old mirrors where. I search for a set but I refuse to pay $300 + for a 260/240z pair, off to my local wreckers I go. Found a set off a 1970 honda civic chrome mirrors in poor condition but spent an hour polishing and they turned out great And only $20 cant complain. Here is a pic of one polished one in wreckers condition. Sorry for the massive pic guys struggling with photobucket lately especially with the app Quote
