Anyone watch the first practice of f1 yesterday, the sound of the cars is so different and quiet I don't think I'm that excited about it this year. I think a big reason people like to go and watch on tv is the amazing sound of an f1 car and it's just not there for me this year.

Would your z be as exciting to you if you couldn't hear the raspy exhaust sound?

On the TV they sounded like a Ducati.

What sounds better than a Ducati?= 20 Ducacti.

I'm with Alan Jones, "does the sound really matter if there is good racing". I fear that this years GPs, for the most part, will be economy runs with a possible spurt at the finish.

One good thing now is you can hear the tyres squeal; one thing I never heard before. Watched a little of the qualifying yesterday, one car went in a bit deep under brakes and I heard the tyres squeal. Plus if it's easier on the ears, I'm all for that.

The best F1 noise I ever heard was the last V12 Ferrari at Adelaide when I was working as a fire marshal at Brewery Bend.

I had to take the ear plugs out to hear the Fezza at full noise through the bend for one lap. It was worth the bleeding ears  ;D

The V10's sounded awesome, as did the Cosworth V8's before they went V10 and then back to 8's for the previous tech regs.

It will be interesting to see if the noise grows on you. From watching the telecast, the ICE doesn't sound that good, more like a Dunnydore with no mufflers, but hearing the turbo whistling away and the tyres protesting is great. I would say the notes will change during the year as development continues, though we are stuck with this noise until the current development halt is lifted.

F1 is the only category I have worked at over more than 10 years as a fire marshal/FIV driver where I had to wear ear plugs. Even with plugs the V10's sounded tits, better than the 8's.

And it was tough having to look after the Ferraris on Saturday and Sunday as a senior pit lane fire marshal........

I agree the sound isnt for the purist, but come 5-10yrs and road cars are going to have some crazy turbo and hybrid technology!

The new ones rev to 15000rpm but dont sound anything like a 8/10/12 cylinder screaming at 19000rpm. But hey, as long as theyre still bullet quick!

I didn't go down this year for the first time in a while because I think the new formula is rubbish and the cars hideously ugly. why do they insist on tampering with the rules and continuously handicapping the cars? They will end up driving priuses at this rate. I think they are killing the sport and I won't go to another F1 event again, I'll just watch it with muted interest, hoping that Ricciardo at least does well. In 1986 they were putting out twice the power of now in qualy, that's almost 30 years ago, and this formula is better? The best category ever was Can-Am, when the rules were almost non-existent. I think they are going to lose a lot of the fans with this formula. Do I want to go and see a quiet hybrid attempt to conserve fuel on a circuit littered with chicanes? Not really. End rant.

I'm out of the loop with F1, what has changed this year?

We haven't even seen a single race so I think it's premature to write it off. If the changes enable the drivers to pass each other more frequently they would have been worth it in my opinion.

I really couldn't give a proverbial if Alonso is 20 thousandths faster than Hamilton in an 800hp screaming machine unless he can pass him and be passed on the track. Have a look at the races in the 80's - they passed each other! That's what I want to see. To me, that's where the excitement of racing comes from and if that means limiting power and changing things up a litte then so be it.

Having said that, I also watch rally but that's a totally different type of racing and I watch it for different reasons.

im all for regulation (but not total a 'controlled' car), and bringing the cars back to earth, I know f1 is the pinnacle of the sport, but if we want maximum horsepower from cars, then go and see top fuelers at the drag strip.

By cutting back the'r engines and other aspects of limitations, actually 'makes' them improve the technology and engineering, which is why the rest of the automotive has come along as far as it has.

We are finally seeing F1 tech in our road cars, and allbeit only a small amount, this is what F1 has always been about.

The endless budgets, trial and error, ingenuity and pushing things to the limit.

Only because these guys 'can' do it, do we see the gains, it wont be long & they will be lapping as fast as they used to.

Oh and I also remember when they ditch the 1.5l turbo engines waaay back, and went to 12's and 10's, bring back the turbos i Say!

Remember when the moto-gp went back to 800's, took the teams a while but it wasnt long untill they were lapping faster than ever before...perfect example of scaling back the size/output for a better result.

Also there is some environmental requirement to push with F1, otherwise electric cars will never advance like the IC engine.

One day soon we may see the new electric cars out performing all if the technology is developed by F1.

Good to see the aussie lad starting from 3rd Pos'n none the less.

Looks like the celebrity challenge will be the hilight event....

Yeah I saw someone put their car on it's lid. Good stuff provided nobody was badly hurt.

Well for one I'm happy with the new sound, it didn't wake me up as it has in the past years.

But the jet fighters came in so bloody low close to my place, i was amazed and almost deafened.

For the first time in a very long time F1 tech will have a direct impact on road car technology. If it were not for the formula changes the brilliant energy recovery systems that they have all implemented would not exist, and just for that aspect itself the rule changes make this season the most exciting one that I can remember!

KERS is replaced by two motor generator units – the MGU-H, recovering energy from the exhaust and the MGU-K recovering energy from braking. P

The MGU-K will generate three times as much heat as the V8 KERS unit did, and if it melts, the car will rely on internal combustion only, making it effectively uncompetitive.P

The MGU-H absorbs power from the turbine shaft to convert heat energy from the exhaust gases, but is also used to control the speed of the turbocharger to match the air requirement of the engine by slowing it down in place of a wastegate or accelerating it to compensate for turbo lag.

Genius.

Agreed we shouldn't knock it until we actually see a race. Never had any allegiance to any particular team, just following the Aussie(s) and it's great to see that they replaced one Aussie (Webber) with another one in Daniel Ricciardo and that he is doing so well. Last couple of years have been a bit of a procession with Vettel a class above the rest, and while not begrudging him his talent and determination, it would be good to see him have to work a bit harder this year. I know it's racing politics, but I really hope Ricciardo doesn't draw the short straw if things get close between himself and Vettel.

Also hoping the Nissan V8's pick up the pace too, how good are the Volvo's straight out of the box?

In the race to revolutionise F1 in 2014 and beyond, F1 Boss Bernie Ecclestone had one clear directive "Get back to the ground roots of this sport, go back to nature"

Some engineers however seem to have taken those directives a bit to literally choosing to model the front nose and c0ckrpit after that of the Proboscis Monkey.
