Didn't believe it for a second.  :)

The spare shell is being sent to Paul tomorrow. Glad to see the back of this thing, as I'm sure my neighbours are!

Don't worry, I measured the ride height so that I can replicate it.  ;)

Things are definitely happening for you George!  Price seems pretty good for the interior and it looks a nice set up.

The seat frames are second hand but everything has been freshly powder coated. Interestingly the seat backs have evidence of rust patches near the bottom. I wonder if this is a usual place for rust or if it's just this set. Either way it's not a concern.

My seat backs had rust at the bottom - pretty much in all the places where the foam was well and truly stuck on to the frame after 40 years.  I had rust along the top of the frame as well and pitting/surface rust on the headrest part of the sheetmetal which yours don't seem to have.  I'm part way through cleaning them up - was a missing husband all of Sunday working on one of them !

Finally I've started playing around with some parts.

Spare Tyre Clamp

Pretty rough looking but the rubber is in good shape

After a sandblast

2 coats of VHT primer and 2 coats of VHT Engine Enamel Aluminium

I'm sure the 500+ f. heat resistance will come in handy here...

Heat Shield

Again, very rough looking

Mostly just grease and grime

However, not all is rosy under all that grime

Not pleased with the finish but it'll have to do

The paint however is excellent

Horns

I thought I'd tackle the horns as well. They look rough and they are! They do however work and as everything on these cars they are serviceable, I just had to work out how they toot!

Bit banged up so I roughly hammered them back in to place

This is where I'll have to do some more work. There is a paper insulator (my best guess) which has deteriorated. I need to source a replacement material.

Sandblasted. The part on the right was plated. I have hit it with a primer for now. Not sure if that will affect the performance of the horn but I can always go back and plate it later.

More of that VHT in satin black. I bought it for other parts so I thought why the hell not.

I'm not quite there yet with the horns. I've only done 1 and I still need to fine tune it but it does emit a sound. It's nothing like a proper horn though and I'm guessing it's got to do with the insulator mentioned earlier and also because I didn't have everything tight due to still drying paint. The fasteners need to be plated or replaced as well.

Ohhhh I likey, restoration of what others would otherwise consider junk. Did you buy a sandblast cabinet George?

Posted

It's satisfying seeing them come back to life and it serves as good practise for skills that will be required later on when we get to some of the more expensive/rare items. It's all fun :)

Yes, I bought one a couple of weeks ago and just started using it this weekend; basically learning on these parts.

I love hare and forbes, the one in north Parramatta is only a 10 minute drive from me, and im like a kid in a candy store there because everything is pretty reasonably priced! I actually was there on saturday buying a 10mm pneumatic finger sander!

this one actually!

I saw the sandblasting cabinet too, and was temped, i was also tempted by the pedestal drill and the bench grinder with attached belt sander.

Thanks to Peter for giving me his knob. Every time I touch it I'll think of you...  ::)  :P

Gav, or anyone else, how do you get the plastic collar off?

Also, is there anyone making exact replicas of the button?

You can remove the bottom half as far as I'm aware. I wouldn't try as you'll damage it. You should be able to rechrome it though.

I'd refresh the wood grain first.

In terms of the button I'll send a PM.

Paul has made some progress in between sitting in his Hako while making race-car noises.

We're hoping it returns from the blasters with... well, just hoping it returns...

I saw your car at Paul's the other week. It made me feel better about doing mine as mine is in a similar state. I can't wait to see this one all done.

Nice work on getting the NOS 1/4 panels that should take care of 20% of your problems :). Where did you source them? Should I even ask about cost? Although probably still cheaper than fabricating new ones or restoring what you had.

It's good to see your car making progress, it motivates me to work on mine. Since we are having a race after all, aren't we?

Be afraid - very afraid! :)

Sandblasting or soda may not leave you with much... :'(

I agree this shell will have to be completely "unpicked & reconstructed" to ensure it really survives in the long term.

Don't want to be totally negative - but this project is ONLY a job for a professional body/panel tradesman (Ledge or equally skilled).

Must also say - "what price are you prepared to pay" to save this early chassis? :-\

I commend your preservation aspirations - but reality of $ required on this one is going to hurt - BIG TIME.

Only my thoughts & I like your concept/commitment to preserving an early chassis.

Good luck with bringing her back to life :)

Again - I say well done for your level of commitment to save this early chassis ;)

Wow - I am surprised NOS 1/4 panels were an option - I am also interested in where these sourced??

It was just fortunate timing with the quarters. Someone approached Paul and he offered them to me. I don't know who it is but they had been sitting on them for a number of years, as I understand it, and they have my thanks for passing them on.
