G Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 The best video I've ever seen on engine building, power, porting, K&N filters etc etc. OK, so it's aimed at Mini A-series engines, but most of the truths would seem to ring true. Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted November 25, 2013 Administrators Posted November 25, 2013 To quote "The valves are the worst impediment to flow" - that's why I love rotors, "Look Ma, No Valves" haha. Quote
dat2kman Posted November 25, 2013 Posted November 25, 2013 To quote "The valves are the worst impediment to flow" - that's why I love rotors, "Look Ma, No Valves" haha. Oh Gav! The rotors do have an impediment to flow!!! A 90 degree bend in the side housing!!!! But not in a Perpheral Port...... Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted November 25, 2013 Administrators Posted November 25, 2013 I was just being facetious . Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted November 26, 2013 Administrators Posted November 26, 2013 This series is also awesome on mini performance modification. Part 2 has good details on engine head work etc.. Quote
Moderators PB260Z Posted November 26, 2013 Moderators Posted November 26, 2013 I have a copy of his "how to modify your Mini" from my old mini days. Really good book, he knows his stuff. Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted November 27, 2013 Administrators Posted November 27, 2013 Just going through the video still, learning so much. This should be essential viewing for anyone considering modifying their L-series. I've certainly learnt a lot and I've read the Datsun L-series how to modify books etc.. Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted November 27, 2013 Administrators Posted November 27, 2013 By the way he talks about the A-series engine benefiting from a scatter cam (or dual pattern) design - does anyone know if the L-series suffers from the same issue that the A-series motors do and do they benefit from this type of camshaft profile? I've seen some variable camshaft sprockets available for the L-series so I can only assume that perhaps people have experimented with this in the past? I've never been more motivated to rip into an L-series engine . By the way I did a quick Google Search to see if anyone had mentioned these camshaft profiles before and stumbled across an old but good resource here: http://www.datsunzgarage.com/engine/ Quote
NZeder Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 If you love rota then this I am sure you have seen before - if not enjoy this off topic movement Build right here in "the land of long white cloud" 814HP at the wheels on pump gas and non boosted see http://pulseperformance.co.nz/ Quote
G Posted November 27, 2013 Author Posted November 27, 2013 Gav, Bear in mind that the Mini faces a severe head design problem in so far as the ports charge-rob the 2 middle cylinders, so there is a lot of work directed at trying to fix this issue as best as possible. Vizard has written a number of books since the fabled mini tuning manuals. I'm currently working through one which discusses building engine for hp. I'm going to try to thumb through the Ford OHC manual and I've been able to source one he wrote for the Triumph straight 6's as well. Hopefully some of this can be applied to Nissan 6's. I really like his no-nonsense attitude and theories proven by 1000's of hours on various dynos.. There is some talk of the Victorian Mini Club bringing Vizard to Australia to do another talk. I'll let you know if it goes ahead. Quote
NZeder Posted November 27, 2013 Posted November 27, 2013 Talking about Ford OHC - the Ford Pinto and the Nissan L6 have a lot of design details in common. Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted November 27, 2013 Administrators Posted November 27, 2013 @G that would be awesome, the man practices what I often preach with regard to Google Analytics - test and measure. Except his experiments require far more effort than mine usually do. He mentions in that talk using computers to measure a lot of this and gain insight into exactly what's happening. It's given me new interest from a computer science perspective how all this stuff comes together and how computers can be used to aid in putting together an engine package. Quote
G Posted November 27, 2013 Author Posted November 27, 2013 Gav, read about Vizard and cam selection. He's developed a programme which selects the best cam for the engine and what you want the engine to do. NZeder - his Ford tuning book is about the Pinto engine. Now you've fired me up to source a copy to read! Quote

DreamZproject Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 Wow he loves K&N fliters, very interesting that he says no race engine should go filterless! Quote
andyk_79 Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 Wow he loves K&N fliters, very interesting that he says no race engine should go filterless! Synical old me - are we talking "I've been paid an endorsement" love or "I genuinely believe these are the best thing for your engine" love. It's so hard to pick these days!! Quote
George Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 Seems like a genuine hard on to me. He goes on about them for a number of minutes. Good watch. Thanks for sharing. Quote
G Posted July 2, 2014 Author Posted July 2, 2014 My mate is organising the seminars with David. There are two - one to talk general engine power tuning and mods, the other will focus specifically on A-series. Maybe we could all go and stack the session on the side of OHC straight 6's! Quote
DreamZproject Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 Bit about filters is in the first 4 mins, watch and be quite surprised... I thought K&N was all about name, but this guy seems pretty sold! (not bought ) Quote
Riceburner Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 Really interesting explanation of the filter and how it works. He's mad for them, maybe it's the sceptic in me but I can't help but think that there's some sort of affiliation. They are being compared to stock paper filters though. Quote
DreamZproject Posted July 4, 2014 Posted July 4, 2014 30:00 in is interesting! Can't explain it myself, but worth a watch... Quote
G Posted February 15, 2015 Author Posted February 15, 2015 The session last year got cancelled, but he's coming back. My mate is looking after him, so I'm going to see if I can get an L head for him to look at and provide comments.. Quote
