The fact that it has only 2 pins and the remains of double-sided tape in the centre strongly suggests that is a bonnet badge. GTI-Z - would you mind posting a photo of the front and one of the rear of your badge? It would also help if someone with a 280ZX could tell us if their bonnet badge is metal or plastic.
-
That would be a 280ZX bonnet badge.

blu260z - I think you may have misread Andrew's post (#122) - he said "It's all because I have very little trust in this shell..." - not "very little rust".

On Australian delivered 1973 240z's the front indicators are separate amber lights as seen on this car (except that they were fitted on top of the bumper). The lights under the bumper, in the valance corner pieces, were parking lights only. I assume that earlier 240Z's used dual filament bulbs in the valance mounted lights with clear lenses, to act as parking/indicators. (Can someone confirm this please?) The options to delete the separate indicator lights are therefore; - Fit dual filament bulbs and wire up like the earlier 240Z's (I think this would be technically illegal because amber indicators was a new ADR requirement in 1973). - Rewire the valance lights as indicators with amber bulbs or lenses and use H4 headlights with built in parking bulbs, wired appropriately. - Find a pair of 260Z style valance lights which have a split clear/amber lens and separate bulbs for indicator and parking lights.

It might be a very rare factory colour as Gavin has suggested. The eBay listing for this 1971 240Z says - "Exterior Color: Gray" "The vehicle was repainted in the 1983, but remained original color." I sent the seller a message regarding the colour, as it is not shown in Carl Beck's lists (http://www.zhome.com/History/ZColorGallary/ and http://zhome.com/History/colors.html) but he/she did not reply. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1971-Datsun-Z-Series-240z-/291634722606?forcerrptr=true&hash=item43e6c8b72e%3Ag%3Alt4AAOSwHQ9WZx9j&item=291634722606&nma=true&si=xr9RSWraV3qLKn6mPK0gpgqpNJg%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 -

Congratulations on buying the car! It's always a bit tricky to tell from a photograph, but it appears to be green, which means the factory 260Z colours were; 302 Green Leaf Metallic - http://www.zhome.com/History/ZColorGallary/302LeafGreen.jpg 240 Green Metallic - http://www.zhome.com/History/ZColorGallary/240GreenMetallic.jpg 303 Green Metallic - http://www.zhome.com/History/ZColorGallary/303green.jpg It doesn't really look like any of these. Were you told that it was a factory colour? -
It would certainly suit me too Andy. I have not enquired, but I assume that there would be a significant saving on comprehensive insurance too.

There is also the option of the Harrington Group's stainless steel reproduction bumpers; http://www.groupharrington.com/en/part/36/datsun-240z-and-260z-bumpers.html http://www.groupharrington.com/en/page/42/about-bumpers.html "Please note, we offer bumpers with rubbers as original, hence the bumpers come with holes. If you want your bumpers without rubbers and holes, you need to inform us at the time of purchase." I bought a set a few years ago when the price and the exchange rate meant that they were less than the GST limit of A$1,000 (not including freight). Unfortunately, as of today, they are £765.00, "Buy today and save: £66.00" (they always seem to have a 'deal' on offer) = £699 (GBP) which is approximately A$1,452! Freight is £59 (GBP) giving a total of £758 (GBP) which converts at today's rate to A$1,574. You would then expect to pay GST of A$145, giving a total of A$1,719 - ouch!

If you are prepared to emigrate from the ACT all the way to NSW, you can participate in Stage 2 of the trial; http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/roads/registration/get-nsw-registration/historic-vehicles/log-book-trial.html "The log book trial has two stages: Stage 1 - From 1 October 2015, vehicles that are in, or eligible to be in, the existing Historic Vehicle Scheme can be part of the log book trial. The registered operator must be a member of a Roads and Maritime recognised historic vehicle club that is participating in the log book trial. Stage 2 - In early 2016, a Modified Classic Vehicle Scheme will be introduced. These vehicles will be eligible for conditional registration and can be included in the log book trial." "Early in 2016, Stage 2 will see the development of a Modified Classic Vehicle Scheme. This scheme will provide the opportunity for modified classic vehicles which are 30 years of age or older to also be conditionally registered. The Modified Classic Vehicle Scheme is anticipated to operate in a similar way to the Historic Vehicle Scheme. Things like forming a club, joining a club and applying for conditional registration will be similar. Clubs may also choose to participate in the log book trial for classic vehicles. Existing recognised historic vehicle clubs may also choose to become a club under the Modified Classic Vehicle Scheme. Some matters currently being worked through with enthusiasts, industry and government stakeholders include the vehicle standards and CTP insurance classification. Modified vehicles require a different process to determine their suitability for safe use and it is important that clubs have this capability. From 1 October 2015, if you are interested in either forming or joining a club under the proposed Modified Classic Vehicle Scheme please email Modified.Vehicles.Scheme@rms.nsw.gov.au. For further information about the Historic and Classic Vehicle Log Book Trial, please call the Contact Centre on 13 77 88."

You caught me with my blinkers down Alan! I started the "What's the blinking story?" topic, so I know you are right about the front indicators. In fact - I added a new post to that topic earlier today, with a photo of the hole under the bumper that was used to relocate the indicators - http://www.viczcar.com/forum/topic/13953-whats-the-blinking-story/page-2 - post #24 I now remember you pointing out that AWU91K had a 'replica' front valance in that topic as well. I would have used a different example, but I did several Google Image searches for 'UK 240Z', '240Z England' etc and I didn't find any suitable photos. Notwithstanding my injudicious choice of photograph, the 280Z does have a very different front valance and grille to suit. *Edit - this is the best I can find;

The UK 240Z valance and the 280Z valance are quite different. UK 240Z 280Z

Just a pedantic follow up to this topic - A very late (sold 12/10/1973) and totally original 240Z (HS30-103744) was recently sold by the Z Car Shop in Melbourne. This picture of the car shows both the original location of the front blinker, and one of the holes under the bumper, conveniently provided by the factory, that was used by many to relocate the blinkers.
