    Noisy Tappets

The main oil supply for the cylinder head comes from one small feed from the block. If, when the engine was rebuilt, this hole somehow got blocked (when the top of the block was machined for example) then the oil flow to the head could be compromised. On a side note, how long did it take to get oil pressure the first time the rebuilt engine ran? If the oil pump was primed, and the oil filter filled prior to first start-up it should have been almost instantaneous (anything within 15s probably isn’t too much of an issue and probably wouldn't have cause the cam lobe wear you are talking about).
  2. As a relatively new member to this forum I can’t speak of the history or intent when setting it up, however I can talk about my experiences. The forum seems a bit ‘clicky’. If you have been on here for a long time and have met or know most of the other long time members then you’re ‘okay’. However, if you are new a large amount of scepticism is shown by the long term members. I can understand this. I’m a member on other forums where I’m one of the long term members and it ‘seems’ a disproportionately large amount of the new members are annoying (not searching before posting, not asking clear and concise questions, making assertions (correct or incorrect) about long time members, etc). Most people can only handle this for so long. So the first 50, 100, 1000 new annoying members, you are polite to, but eventually you can get cranky and be a bit harsh (very understandable, but is it acceptable???). I copped a bit when I joined, and I realise some of this was me and some of it was members just being jack of annoying newbies. I don’t resent anyone for it. I have just tried to be polite and contribute constructively in the technical section or ask concise questions. I have now also met a couple of the Canberra guys (chris240, sco_aus, etc), and I think this helps, but I still don’t feel like I’m “accepted”, let alone appreciated or liked (not that it matters really, I’m just explaining as a newbie how the forum comes across). Ultimately it comes down to whether you believe respect is earned or given...
  3. I could be interested, although I can't see your picture (work internet filter on 'Social Media' )... Can you attach a photo rather than link it, please??
  4. I realise this is a bit out there even for an 'off topic' section, but I'm hoping a few of you webpage savvy people could give me some advice. I’ve got some idea when it comes to IT (I spend a significant proportion of my day job writing VB code), but I am not as clued up on webpage building and hosting. I’d like to build my own (I have already written a simple website in html on my PC) and then have a good/reliable/not too expensive company host it. I’m pretty sure I’ve got the domain name all sorted and registered, however I would like some recommendations on hosts, and information on building and protecting your own webpage (techniques, software, reference material, etc). At this stage the website will only be an information site about a business and the services it provides, but later I might like to add secure information transfer or payment mechanisms, so info on encryption or secure payment options would be good too. In other words, I’m okay with the actual html coding, I just have limited knowledge about the rest. Any advice would be appreciated. Feel free to PM me if you prefer. Thanks, DAZDA
  5. I'll try to make it.
  6. +1 and some Good Karma I have the HS30, still working on getting an FD though...
  7. Mazda Furai http://www.topgear.com/content/features/stories/2008/03/stories/05/1.html http://www.japanese-concept-cars.com/2009/10/mazda-furai-concept/ They actually built one and tested it at Laguna Seca (aka Mazda Raceway).
  8. That looks like MOTOR magazine's spreasheet for PCOTY (Performance Car of the Year) data - there are tabs for Winton and Phillip Is. They pay guys like Warren Luff, Rick Bates, John Boston, etc to test the cars (along with one of their journalists). So you would hope they would dominate the lap times, especially driving cars like those. 1m06s is freakin' quick, top work! How much grunt do you think your smokey old LS1 is putting out?

    Front Sway bar

For anything you plan on genuinely racing I would recommend 'adjustability', whether that is Anti-roll bars, dampers, spring heights, castor, camber, etc. That way you can tune the car to the track/conditions/your driving style. Adjustable ARBs are generally for fine tuning the front to rear ratio of weight transfer, because changing the springs at a race meeting can take too long and requires lots more money for 3 or 4 sets of springs. I would suggest a 22mm front ARB as a starting point but without knowing other stuff like the rear spring rates, the weight distribution F to R, rear ARB size, etc, it is a bit hard to guess...
  10. In which group? CRC (Club Rally Cars)?
  11. *Click here* for the thread in the NSW section.
  12. Fifth Gear Motoring are running their next Advanced Driver Training course/Track day at Wakefield Park on Wednesday the 15th of June. I'm thinking about going. These courses are great for the first-timer to the track or someone trying to get their lap times down a bit more. For more information http://www.fifthgear.com.au/trackdays.php
  13. I don't think I can make it, sorry lads.
  14. Happy Birthday Lurch. May your day be full of 'Go-Faster' Zed parts and many ice cold beers.
  15. Skipz, Just be careful about which Diameter you (or the manuals) are referring to, Outside Diameter (OD), Inside Diameter (ID), or the diameter of the wire axis. For example, if the OD is the fixed diameter, a thicker spring wire will result in a smaller ID... Anyway, the King Springs ‘Low’ for a 240Z seemed to fit fine on a set of standard struts (as they should). A good replacement for the standard springs, being a reasonable compromise of improved handling while not too harsh for the street. A bit too soft for serious track work, in my view.
  16. Can you give us all the set-up info?? Main Jet size, Emulsion Tube Numbers, Air Correctors, Idle Jet Size, Idle Jet Tube, Choke Size, etc If as Peter Mc says your car was running around Sandown and blowing black smoke the whole way, I suggest either the main jets (and maybe the idle jets as well) are too big OR the fuel bowls are too full and causing extra fuel to pass through the main jets. What fuel pressure are you running into the carbies? Unfortunately it could be so many things, but if you haven't already I'd start by checking; Float levels Replace the needle and seats for the fuel input to the bowls Check the Idle Adjustment screws Smaller Main Jets Smaller Idle Jets Check for wear (lateral movement) in the main throttle shaft Have a read of this. Unfortunately it's based around 4 cylinders but the principles are the same. http://www.classicrallyclub.com.au/docs/Tips_tuning_Weber_carburettors_DVAndrews.pdf Having said all that, if you are seriously considering EFI and are prepared to spend some cash ($4k-6k) just do it. There is absolutely no comparison between carbies & a dizzy, and fully programmable ignition and fuel management.
  17. A few good photos taken by a friend - click here.
  18. Lurch, good to see you have somewhere sorted for some 'Secret Men's Business' (working on Zeds, Drinking beer, Talking about Zeds, looking at Zeds that are in pieces while drinking beer and talking about Zeds).
  19. Alan, I think you may find it depends on the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) in question. There are several different types of ATF, some are for auto transmissions with diffs in them (like some FWDs), some for Constantly Variable Transmissions, others have different temperature/pressure properties, etc. As for colour, most manufacturers like to have different colours for oils with different purposes regardless of whether or not the oil itself is actually the same stuff. For example (I'm pretty sure) Castrol PSF is Green/Blue and Castrol Dexron II ATF is Red. Having said all that, my understanding is that most Power Steering Fluid is very similar, maybe even the same???, oil as common ATF (apart from the dye colour in some cases)... But don't use my word as gospel.
  20. What's 'Facebook'? I know what Facebook is, I just have no intention of joining...
  21. Like chalk and cheese. They certainly make track days infinitely more fun.
  22. A quick event report. I only entered the Track Day part of the 2011 Datsun Nationals so I decided to drive up from Canberra on the day rather than stay in Goulburn. I spent some time before the event getting the car ready (bolt check, oil changes, fix a rear damper issue, etc). Arrived at Wakefield at about 8am to find way more cars than I thought would be taking part, which was great for the event itself but made scrutineering a bit hectic. The organisers split the day into two parts, in the morning half the competitors would do the hillclimb while the rest did the short track and then after two runs the two groups would swap over. In the afternoon, it was the full racetrack. Having never driven the short track or the hillclimb I felt I didn’t really get the right lines sorted out but was reasonably happy that the car did have any issues other than some heat soak in the SU fuel bowls for the first run on the hillclimb. After what I thought was an extended lunch break (reduced that time on the track for everyone), the full track sessions started. Overall I was pretty happy with how it went and set a time roughly what I was aiming for. According to a few people at the presentation dinner, I managed to do enough to win my class, although I thought I saw someone else in the same class lapping faster than me. I’m a little surprised that somehow even though 3 sessions by 4 laps (including the warm-up laps) is 12 laps total, a few drivers managed more than 12 laps on the timing system. Either they were double-entered cars and forgot to change the timing devices or they were getting more than their share of the track time... Managed to meet a few of the forum guys (sco_aus, GongZ, BenZed) which was great! A few thankyous; The Sydney Z Car Club – For hosting the event this year All the Officials and Volunteers – Without them we can’t go racing Capital Steering and Suspension – For their ongoing support Last but not least My Wife – For her understanding when I spend so much time in the shed If anyone has any photos of the Blue 240Z with 49 on the side I'd love some copies, please PM me.
