  1. Electronic or not it could be manualised if you want to shift it yourself. But if you want full auto then I'm pretty sure that the 3 +1 Z31 box is electronic and, as you say, would need it's own TCU. Which is not a bad idea, they are not that expensive. Best to check with someone like KEAS or their Melbourne agent though.
  2. The 3 speed + overdrive out of my Z31 is apparently a good type of box, they can be modded to take 450hp but that's not a cheap exercise. Best thing is that they are comparatively light so one would have used one behind the Z31's V8 if I was confident it could hold it's power. If you are going to use one Peter check for shift improvement mods, an Aussie on HybridZ used to sell one mod kit.
  3. Interesting noting the sequential shift, when shifting down from a high speed to a low speed he spends/wastes a lot of time shifting. With good race brakes used to the max you would not have time to do that.
  4. "This end up" obey and enjoy.

    T5Z Box

I've freighted a gearbox interstate, just strap it tightly to a half pallet, make sure it's clean and all the oil is drained out.

    T5Z Box

Z31's had T5's (?) before going to the heavy five speed Jap box that was later fitted to the Z32.
  7. That's a pretty big call, in effect you are saying that an official Nissan publication is not to be believed. Because it's a "coffee table book"? I've found it quite interesting, the part on aero development of the 280ZX is certainly informative as is the process of bringing a new model into existence.
  8. Looked at that DIY one Andrew thanks, the problem with it is the weak electrodes he uses. I plan on getting the $300 one, it has pretty good electrodes and if the inverter? needs replacing look at using one from a microwave oven or whatever. Going to use it to double up on the pinch welds around all the big openings of the project Z31, doors, windscreen and so on. Two mm max.
  9. Looks like the engine can go back a bit more, making the bonnet latch bracket removable/bolt on may give more space for that. I'm sure that you won't rush it but now is the time to get the basic installation as good as possible, it helps bonnet clearance for a start. This is going to be good.
  10. Gavin, someone has to pay for all this extra border protection security, your contribution is appreciated.
  11. Good to see the progress, a lot of LS engines are rear sump with the pickup coming from the front. May be able to adapt something but there are probably other solutions out there in google land.
  12. This is more my price, $300, rated at 2.5 kva which is good, 30% duty cycle not so good. https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/beenleigh/miscellaneous-goods/new-240v-portable-spot-welder-2-welding-tip-sets-2mm-5mm-/1155117812
  13. Bit expensive for me Lurch.
  14. The simple type with two jaws that clamp together to effect a pinch weld, any experiences or recommendations?
  15. Cheeky bugger in that TR7 above having lots of fun with V8 power, it's just not on old chap
  16. Further thoughts on bonding new floors in, would it be possible/practical to form the edges to fit without cutting tabs all around? That would make it stronger still and improve the aesthetics. And maybe use less obvious pop rivets to hold it all in place until the bond sets, then grind off the bottom parts of the rivets that stick out afterwards. Just throwing ideas around.
  17. No weight number on the Barra yet? I recall that these engines were designed using weight reducing features like hollow camshafts, there was some talk that they weighed around what a twin cam RB did. So a bit bulky but not as heavy as they look?
  18. This is great to see, innovation and alternative ways of doing things, keep us up to date on this benv. I have a couple of targa roof openings to fill in on the Z31, present plan is to make composite panels off the targa glass panels and then bond them into place. Problem with those adhesives you mention is that they require expensive applicators, I'm wondering if the adhesive used to lock bolts into concrete floors could be used, an ordinary caulking gun is all that is required with them. And Lurch, be helpful and show us how you would fit a floor using the technology benv has used.
  19. It's probably because you're Canadian
  20. Looks alright to me, shove it back on
  21. HybridZ is pretty much like here as far as the demographic goes. I only look there about once a week now but over the years have never had any real problems with the mods or anything else there and certainly have benefited from it. One problem with such forums is newbies all keen and enthusiastic post like they are the first ever to mention a topic when for the veterans it's same old so they tend to get a bit abrupt. Understandable both ways.
  22. My metric keys came from Supercheep, they would be about 150mm long, I notice that generally keys are much longer than they used to be.
  23. C'mon man, how about some pics eh lol. Just be careful when cutting down the strut mounts that sufficient flex is still available for the struts, they need to be able to pivot a little bit without much resistance.
  24. It sounds like enough donations are coming in to keep it going, I and many others have found it to be an invaluable source of information particularly for anything out of the ordinary and the high tech stuff too. It's an institution like this site but in a different way, it would be a shame to see it close. It wouldn't do any harm for the Aussies who use it to make a donation.
