Steering wheel spacer, I like that!! does the said spacer use it's clutch much?, It not a go-kart you know Scruff!!! Those poor Smurfs who gave there lives so your box could live...Now, Dodgy Rog has a brand new T110 Nascar dogbox in stock, you won't smash that, and you don't need the clutch....LOL. Just watched your in-car, your right it's a great looking track. You sure make that straight look short!!, Was that PJ in the black Torana just ahead? We might have to plan a trip next year, look's like a lot of fun.

Should I call the RSPCA?

Opened up the local paper yesterday morning at work and found the below headline! Nearly choked on my cereal, spent the rest of the day thinking up what it might meen? What has the big fella been up too? why is the P.M involved?

G'day Adrian, Are you planning on racing your new Zed? will we see it on the gravel? I spent an afternoon at the Nar nar goon train 'Station' five weeks ago, thinking that there would be a train every 10 minutes but had to wait two hours to get a train back to the city to catch a flight home....just scrapped in!! I'm not really used to public transport!!LOL. Your not involved with the footy club are you? I think the event I went to caused a little damage at the clubrooms!! Do you run into Simon Evens at the supermarket? Did you race old Tom Robinson in his Zed much?? Catch ya, Hodgo (also Adrian)

I was looking for a R180 4.4 for my 1600 for a long time, but ended up with a R160 out of a WRX. The STI WRX came out with R180 4.4's I found a couple but they were too expensive for an one off experiment, they were around $1200, and I'm pretty sure thats with LSD. I found them at Suburu wreakers and the odd importer. You can only use the crown wheel and pinion as the Datsun half shafts dont fit in the Subi centre, different splines and lengths(?). I was also told that you may have to drill out the crown wheel bolt holes 1mm to use the Datsun centre which uses larger bolts. The guy I navagate for has a couple, but wont part with them, there definently out there in reasonable numbers. If your in Vic i would try STI Docklands as a good starting point. I've got a 4.4 R200 for my Zed, I've heard they are a lot more common ratio in the R200's. This may be worth looking into as well, unless you can't run one for a certain race class etc. 720's are a great thing for diff's I just picked up another 4.8 on Monday. Jason I was wondering why Siddens was running 15's and not 16's in Targa. He's the man!! Just read you are in Brisbane....no where near Vic!! LOL Good luck.

LOL, I'd go broke!! Theres a fair difference between putting an engine together with someone skilled looking over your shoulder and building a motor!! My golden rule is never trust a dyno figure!! The quarter mile this weekend and Symmon the next will be the real test. Found some photo's of a very well known Zed down here, owned and very well driven by 'Grunge' Reader who lives in the North of the state. The car has just been sold to a guy with a huge car collection, so we might not see it again in action. The gravel photo was taken in 1990 and the Hillclimb shot is 2005 Tassie Hillclimb championships. It was always a good looking jigger.

We've just done our calander for 2010, and the tradition Highcleare hillclimb is on the 13th of Feb next year. It's on the North west coast just south of Burnie, If you have a licence come and have a run.
-
Lock me in for Symmons thanks. Did I read it wrong, Is it the 16th or the 10th? Cheers, Hodgo.
-
Magic, now thats a real race car!! Sportscars really are the go. There's a couple down here that have just been restored or are in the proccess. You will feel like walking beside the Zed after driving this Ash!! When was it raced Ash, I'd love to look it up in my yearbooks?
-
Nice work Scootag, It looks the good now, a huge difference. I saw that Brock photo in the scrap book that came out last year and thought the same thing. Shame our scanner won't work.
-
Cheers, Hillclimb no worries Mick, keep an eye on the web site for an entry, they haven't opened yet, the clubday at Symmons is on the 7th of November as well. It will be the battle of the Zeds at Highcleare, V8 monster Vs Turbo terror...... As for the Rat, I've still got the long springs, sump guard, mud flaps and 15 inch gravel tyres off the old shell, and these gravel hillclimbs are starting to become popular. As for a gasket Dimitri, We just cut a couple out of gasket material, and packed it up to the header level with sliced up washers, works great. There's an extra couple of studs to hold the manifold on which help's a heap.

Another quick up date, yes things are still moving along, with the body work taking longer than expected, Zack the beater is also doing another mates hotrod and building his Gemini rally car so one day a fortnight is about all I get him for. Most of the bodywork is done except for a hard to see dent in the bottom of the drivers door and the back panel under the bumper which is a real mess. One good thing is that I pulled out the fuel tank so he could get access to the rear panel and found 20l's of genuine dark green, high lead 2001 Avgas, not much good for anything with an engine I know, but I was thinking of making it into aftershave, drop me a PM if you want to smell like a real man, trust me the ladies love it.... I've also been busy building the new L20 for my 1600, which has been a real charicter building exercise, but is together and in the car. If you like L series engine, and lets face it who doesn't, you might like the head I've fitted, It's been 'downdrafted' ie the inlet ports have been welded up and raised about 10mm and now angle down ono the top of the valves and a new inlet manifold was cast up to suit. Around 10-12 were built by a guy called John Brookfeild who was also involved with Repco Brabham, Bob Jane racing and the Phil Irvine Holden heads. Hopefully we'll have it on the dyno next week to see if it's any good..... There are several other way's of doing it that I've seen, and might, if it works, be worth trying it on an L6... Anyway back to the Zee, I've finalised the engine spec and hope will start on it real soon, I've got to get the clutch and balancer before to much longer, then we will be under way. I've now got the throttle bodies, manifold and a Motec M48 to run the whole shebang, just got to get the new fuel pump's, surge tank and smaller injectors and the fuel side will be ready to go. So it is coming together...... Photo's....the L4 head with gaskit to get an idea of what I was on about, and the fancy manifold and the third is typically what we were dealing with! $100's worth of Helicoils in this baby!! stay away from old race engines!!
-
Howdy Spawn like Mick said Al is very good to deal with and worth a chat too, I'll also PM you a name and number of the guy at vehicle standards, you will most likely have to fill in a 'Modification application form' and get them to tick it off before Al can sign it off. SI rego might also be worth a look at if your not planning on driving it every day? It's a lot cheaper at rego time and most of the cars running Targa, Rally Tas etc, who are from Tassie, run SI or rally reg. Scando is on Rally reg with his Zed, but you need a CAMs rally licence to get it.
-
Looks great Dimitri, I'm gonna have to pick a different shade of red, mate, when I paint mine just so it's a little different!! lucky my inlet trumpets are chrome, not blue. Have you ported out the redline manifold any? if so, how far can you safely go? any Ideas?
-
To run it as a 240Z in a CAMS event, eg Rally Tas, he has to run a 2.4 block and run a max capacity increase of 17% (2394 plus 407 equals 2801cc), but in a AASA event like Targa Tas you can use the 2.8 block and go silly! The smart move is the 2.4 block as you can run a lot more events as a 240Z, other wise in a CAMS event you would enter as a 280Z with the big block....with the fibre glass panels and perspex on this car has you would have to run in the C3 class which allows the most mod's. It's a bit silly I know but there are different rules for tarmac and gravel rallies, and different rules again depending which class you want to enter. They are completly different to again to historic circuit racing and for that matter classic or historic gravel rallies have different rules again! If it was up to me, everything would be Nc Circuit spec...... Whats some more of it's history ZR240? sounds like a good thing.

Nice Jigger! It's great to see a early Zed saved from the restorers. On your note about the price Ash, did you see the two 240Z's advertised in the Octane magazine that had the restored x works rally car in it (August 09)? one was 22,950 pounds and the other was 23,750 pounds, both very tidy and built by the 'Z' farm in Yorkshire. What does this convert to in Aussie paso's? back on track, I really hope you get what your asking, It's worth every cent, compared to what you see other historic tarmac rally cars being sold for, Zed's are very cheap for what you are getting.

I know a bloke who runs a boat workshop, he might be able to help? Personally I'm looking at buying a Chinook Helecopter.
-
Thank's for that LGee, Mr Bond here is an acquaintance of the said Mr Lawson, this could work out very nicely......
-
Sorry guy's my mistake, I was just informed that the above was a very special price because there 35 crews going over from here. And no problem with booking trailers etc for anyone who will need one for the "race" day (LOL).

Mrs Blue and Boofhead the wonderhorse just went to Victoria to do the Tom Quilty out at Bunyip last weekend, the Cruiser and her huge horse float cost $1300 with a share cabin return on the boat. Still a smart moove to drive it on Shane, yours being rego'd and all, just dont brake the poor thing. Another option is the Toll boat the leaves out of Burnie, I've heard that is cheaper, but you might have to fly over.

Top thread guy's very interesting. Shame that 240Z didn't qualify for Bathurst, that would of opened a few doors now for historic's...There's a ripper article on Gorden Dobie and his Sports 2000 in a very early 'Hot fours and rotaries' and theres a huge article on the history of Datsun/Nissan including all the early Bathurst stuff in a book called 1986/87 Australian Motoring year no.5, which was put out by Berghouse. The book describes the early works efforts in Datsun 1300 Bluebirds, Jack Murrey in a 1967 Skyline 2000gt at Bathurst, the Sports 2000's and the mighty R380, which was a V8 powered sports protoype. In 1972 they shifted there emphasis to rallying, so as you pointed out the 260Z etc were private entries. It was rallying that 240/260/280Z's made the biggest impact in motor racing in Australia. Ross Dunkerton won three Aust rally championships in 240/260Z's along with fully backed works entries in the Southern cross rally's of the 70's. In the 90's when 4wd's weren't as strong and relable as they are now, L28 powered 240/260Z's were always a huge threat on both a National and State level, as drivers like Rob Devenish etc proved. Even today a well driven Z will well up there at a State level, Just look at what Brendon Reeves acheived on his L Plates a couple of years ago! Anyway enough of my crap, keep up the good work.

I bet Kelv save's that under 'Favorites' Man they are wide angle, It would look great on the headlight..... nah, might stuff up the aero, lol. Although I'd like to stick mine on the back drivers side window, I've seen a few done like that and It's a ripper. Next time. I better get a youtube lesson so I can put my version up!!
-
Good job Bondo. Let me tell you race fan's, It's pretty spec'y watching scruffy here drifting the Zed through the sweeper at Symmons in the wet tapped in 5th!! sick puppy!! A 59 is pretty close now.....
-
Talking about painting your blue bottles red.....did you know the works Lancia Delta's in group A WRC rallying used to change there fire exting's after every stage, only when the Celica's were getting close though....and have you heard of a 'Sneaky Pete' NOS bottle, same diameter as the inside of roll cage tube or air (gas) tight roll cages??
-
Wax and RbZ, would you say that 98 and 20-25% Toluene would be close to a straight replacement for avgas, that is, would you run the same compression ratio and dist advance? I'm not far of dynoing a new motor (L20 not 28) and am pretty keen to try both? what do you pay for 20 ltrs of toluene? It's strange, the guy Scando's talking about is very switched on, very, very experienced and conected. He is not short of resourses, if you get my drift, he owns his own engine and chassis dyno's! nine bucks a litre would'nt faze him at all, must be something in it? I better make sure I'm the scrutineer with the fuel test kit, LOL....
