hello from a z enthusiast to be!
gav240z replied to Pegasus Zed's topic in Introductions and Forum Etiquette
It's interesting how many guys with later more powerful Nissan's are getting into the older S30Z. I recall not that many years ago people didn't want to bother with restoring a Z, now it seems that as they less and less common on our roads more and more people want them. Welcome abroad and I highly recommend going to the Nationals to get a feel for these great cars and the community. -

That's nothing, check out this Patina paint job. http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/kadina/cars-vans-utes/1975-datsun-260z-coupe-price-reduced/1013959564# I reckon you couldn't recreate this look if you tried. -
Copping an ear bashing from your wife when taking her on the track in a BMW.

If you have the part no. it will probably help when dealing with Nissan Dealers in Australia. I bought the black plastic surround brand new a few years back from a dealer.

What the man above me said ^^. I know this process sucks mate, to be honest for me it's less the damage to my car, more the cost of my time dealing with all the bull that comes with it. I'm still jumping hoops here (if that makes you feel better? but probably not). Anyway it certainly won't hurt to collect some references to recent cars for sale, links from this forum, eBay ads, specialist classifieds like carsales.com.au - comparing similar cars and specification. Use it to establish a ballpark figure of what you think your car is worth. Send it to their assessor or company and say based on these cars I value my 260z at this price. If you know it's a reasonable price don't let them low ball you into accepting an amount that won't cover replacing poor old Oscar. In my experience after I hit them with all the facts and showed them you couldn't replace my car with the value they put on it, they eventually decided to talk turkey and agreed on my price it did take 3 weeks from the first offer though. Showing before photos really helped also! They saw the car was mint. They hate having open cases so they will want to close it as soon as possible and settle. Keep in mind the guy/girl giving you the offer may be a 3rd party company hired specifically to get you to accept the lowest possible offer. It's like sales in reverse the lower the price he gets you to accept the more commission they make. Hope that helps mate.

Why are RHD cars so popular over there? When you can get good Zs in great condition in LHD configuration? It's always puzzled me to be honest. For example in Australia I don't think many people would be too interested in a LHD Z. I know of a guy in Ireland who purchased a LHD 240z and spent a fair bit of money converting it to RHD. Also I know with a lot of the later cars like Skylines, RX-7's etc.. Canada seems to be a more favourable place to import RHD cars. I don't think they need to be converted over there, but it seems there is more red tape (at least with the later cars) getting them onto US roads. I guess this is also why you were so keen on ADM spec indicators? For your Fairlady project perhaps?
-
S31 chassis prefix that's a genuine JDM car I think . So a true Fairlady Z, that must be rare in your neck of the woods? I'm guessing it lived in Canada since they seem to allow the RHD cars on those roads more easily than in the US is that right?

So I guess it's priced at $8000 too much? But there is an alarming large number of bids on this car. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/datsun-240k-couple-skyline-c110-Project-Car-Drag-Car-Nissan-/200906357434 To think you couldn't give these away years ago, this could fetch more than a 240z in similar condition. This 1 looks far more honest. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Datsun-240k-GL-1974-2D-Hardtop-3-SP-Automatic-2-4L-Carb-/261184872030 -

Totally digging the fact you want to fix up a car you have some history with. Nostalgic value. I like your friends 260z look very clean, is it still that clean? Photo looks a bit dated now (pre digital era).

Its a 2 sweater worth saving looks straight at least.

Nice work, overall looks like a great car. Very little rust really. Oh and those Toyota Tarago's have more torque than you would think, my mum used to have 1. Carried all kinds of car parts in the back lol, 2 motors at 1 stage.
-
haha, the guys at School when I was 18 asked me the same thing about my 260z, it did have a raspy exhaust note so I guess I can't blame them for the mistake. But it's better than the time some 'bell-end' in a taxi asked me if my parents bought me the car. I told him mummy doesn't buy me nice things, this car is built not bought.

Thanks for sharing your story mate and glad the car has been a blast to drive. Daniel Moore is meant to be good around Z's so no doubt this 1 has been well sorted and maintained. RE: Fumes, yeah that's 1 reason a Z isn't so much fun. We should really start a thread on here to end all threads around this topic. However rest assured when I drove the 240z to Goulburn in 2005 I think it was, for the Nationals. I did it in my 240z with it's loud exhaust system (registered 112 db at 4200rpm!) and shagged factory seats (no cushion left) and the fumes. It was Melbourne to Canberra and then some more. About 9 hours or so... Man I got out feeling like a train wreck, the Z made it safely and all but I've not been so mentally drained and smelt of fumes so bad in a long time. It's the worst thing about Z car ownership. I hope your girlfriend doesn't mind haha. At least they don't put lead in fuel anymore.

Mark my replies are probably all in the wrong order, but I'm really sorry to see your baby like this. It's gutting I know, however on the positive side (if there is 1) I'm sure you'll do an awesome job fixing it with your skill set. Get well mate, and take it easy. As mentioned keep a journal, a video journal might be even better! Try to get all the incidents down now, while they are fresh in your mind (regarding the accident), all the little details. If you wait a while you'll forget lots of details. Hopefully you won't have too much grief from insurance and you can get your car back on the road soon. In the interim you have the 2+2. All the best.

Mate I can relate to how you feel, my FD RX-7 was perfect till some pricks decided to steal it and vandalise / crash it into something. It was perfect accident free etc.. but to be honest with you I've also come to realise nothing is perfect.... my Z has had a minor front end incident at some point in it's life, like most Z's probably have also. If you want to keep a car perfect you need to lock it in a garage for 30+ years as a time capsule and never drive it. So long as the repair is done correctly it's fine. It's all in your head. Metal bends, it's bent into shape to make the car in the first place. So don't worry about it too much is what I'm saying.

Help in terms of dealing with insurance companies? Well I know from my experience they hire an intermediate 3rd party to true and put a value on the car. They will come to you with a low offer, that is if the vehicle is deemed a write off, which it shouldn't be, but given the age of the car and the damage and how much it might cost to get it fixed by a pro bodyshop it could go down that road. It certainly looks like the kind of damage that is superficial at first, but as you dig it's actually worse than you first think. Anyway they will try and low ball you, you will need to do research on comparative cars and their value to show your cars 'true' worth. From then on it's a debate really as to the value of the car and how much you will be paid. That's IF the car is a write off. Otherwise you should be able to choose who does the repair and they should send an assessor to see how much damage is done to the car. It might help to have your own assessor (from your insurance company or a club spokesperson or similar?) also inspect the car (since this is a specialist car) most people won't know the value of parts for this car. You can't walk into Nissan and ask for a new 1/4 panel to suit an S30Z (or can you?).

QLD (Amended) Hoon Laws - sucks to be you guys :(
gav240z replied to C.A.R.'s topic in Off Topic Discussions
What bollocks, I mean it's so open to interpretation as to what constitutes as 'hooning' that more than likely cars will be crushed when the owners don't deserve it. Man Australia can be such a Nanny state at times. I've not once seen a TV report over here on the nuisance that hoons cause on the roads of Ireland. It's not even a factor worth reporting on, never been on the news as far as I remember in the 6 years I've been here. Not to say there is no boy racers, there are plenty I'm sure but the way they go on about it in Australia it's like it's not safe to leave your house for fear of instant death from a car doing doughnuts and ploughing into your house . haha. Meanwhile the number of deaths related to allergic reaction to medication causes far more deaths. Yet there is no public outrage at what Drug Companies are doing to everyone from the A Current Affair crowd! I'm all for stopping young fellas being stupid on the road, but will this really change anything? Probably not. -
Would you buy this if u had 75k+ to spend on a car
gav240z replied to Fairlady Z's topic in General Discussions
Phase III is a great looking car, not sure it's worth a million dollars though. But if there is a buyer that's all that counts. I wouldn't worry about resale value like Dimitri has said a 432 would always be snapped up by a buyer in Japan, but in another few years it will be worth even more than now. Provided it's well kept and stays original. If it's missing some original bits that could get difficult / expensive. I would definitely be talking to HS30-H (Alan) on here about any car you are looking at, from what I understand he would be able to help you verify authenticity. Think he has said in the past that genuine 432s change hands privately and you need to 'know' the right people to get your hands on 1. -
