$500 is absurd, you can get a reproduction item cheaper than that. Try these guys. http://www.chrometech.com.au/index.php/sample-page/ Although they did quote me $160 AU to do tail light trims...So don't expect mega savings. I think it would be worth asking if you can get a better price for doing a bunch of items, heater vents, radio surround, tail lights, badges etc.. Surely they could do a good price on all those items at once.

If it's a 71 I'd be interested in knowing what chassis number it is. -

I saw this advertisement today and got me thinking about what you were saying re: following up with people involved with Datsun's in Australia around that period. It looks like Arnold Glass was involved, so I looked up his name on this forum. I see Peter has mentioned him a couple of times. http://www.viczcar.com/forum/topic/4519-rb25de-or-l28-best-bang-for-your-buck/?p=50232 http://www.viczcar.com/forum/topic/10734-the-weight-of-vehicles/?p=126752 So he may have been responsible for the Zeds becoming available here. Another forum topic here talks about his racing career. http://forums.autosport.com/topic/105139-the-strange-career-of-australian-arnold-glass/ Seems like an interesting fella, will have to find out what happened to him. *Edit unfortunately i'm too late. Died in 2009. http://www.smh.com.au/news/obituaries/from-tin-shed-to-flying-high/2009/01/27/1232818432538.html Like you said, I'm sure he would have had some very interesting stories to tell.

Get ya rusty bucket right here! http://page13.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/r146575160 Appears to be a Fairlady Z-L 1 day to go. 901,000 yen current price, ~11,300 AUD.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Datsun-Z-Series/191824784813 $25,000 USD buy it now. HLS30 16925 The hubcap is the 'later' style D cap* *You can tell earlier and later caps because the tyre valve hole is in between the spokes on the cap in the later ones. Where as the earlier ones the hole is aligned with a spoke. Looking from the rear the earlier caps have less tabs, later ones have more. Also as a late 70 build date 12/70 it no longer has the 2400 valve cover. This is the correct cover for the car.

Only in this thread here: http://www.classiczcars.com/topic/17034-a-theory-rhd-hs30-model-standard-exterior-rear-view-mirror-fitment/?do=findComment&comment=135797 The PDFs I sent are the only ones I have for AU market cars in terms of part numbers and specifications. My guess is that like you say maybe it was a Nissan Australia issue or Australian Design Regulation (ADRs) rule that forced the mirror change / rules. The bullet style ones are quite heavy as you know and perhaps were viewed as pedestrian hazards and maybe the flat style were seen as less damaging in an impact with a pedestrian? There is a lot of items listed in the AU parts manual as OP, like hazard switch, heated rear screen, fog lights etc.. Most 240z's sold here certainly didn't have those items. I always found it odd we didn't get them hazard switch in particular.

I'd be very careful getting external panels sand blasted especially by a home blaster type business. The panels on an S30z are pretty thin compared to American cars also so if a business has no experience working on say early rotaries or other classic Japanese stuff I'd be wary. Manually stripping can be more work, but each car can require a different approach. How bad is the car? Chemical dipping is another option.

Early 71 240z. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Datsun-Z-Series-Early-240Z-known-as-Series-1-/201536523738 Buy it now $24k USD. I cannot see this hanging around long at the current price....

Thanks, I thought 17K was too cheap. Good to know it went to a good home. Very hard to find them that original now.

Ashley at Moorabbin Auto Spares has done a 240ZR replica, well I say replica but really it's a tribute in that it has the same paint / livery scheme as a 240ZR. However I'm sure Ashley would himself say it's not a replica. Sadly it's not being used at the moment on the track, I'm sure it will eventually though!

Hey Alan, I referring to the flat style fender mirrors, more so than the bullet style ones. Any ideas behind why Nissan used the flat mirrors on early 240z's in our market and apparently no other global market? Like I mentioned previously it appears the flat mirrors are missing from the Nissan Australia Parts Manuals. There is no part no. listed and no graphical representation of these in the manuals. I'm attaching 2 pdf's here. AU-Door-Mirrors-Part-Manual.pdf AU-Fender-Mirrors-Part-Manual.pdf 96301-E4100 is the part no. for the RH side door mirror (listed as European and probably why North American's have a habit of referring to everything as being 'euro' spec). 96301-E4100 RH Fender mirror black 96302-E4100 LH Fender mirror black These are I believe the same as the JDM mirror part no. for S30Z's and has OP next to it (Optional Part). NB: The manuals at the bottom say revised December 1979. So I wonder if earlier manuals would have had these part no's?

Merged a couple of threads on this topic. I also found a couple of other discussions on it. As you can see a lot of confusion here: http://www.classiczcars.com/topic/17034-a-theory-rhd-hs30-model-standard-exterior-rear-view-mirror-fitment/?page=1 I think in part because the AU parts manuals don't specify the mirrors we see on early cars. Perhaps because the parts manual was updated in 1977/8 and as a result they omitted the old mirror part no.? I do find it interesting that Nissan decided to fit these mirrors when exporting to our market and not use the regular bullet style mirrors? Perhaps it was a cost cutting exercise? Or perhaps like fenders that had no side repeaters installed it was just the way they wanted to present the cars in our market. But somewhere into the 71 model range Nissan appears to have switched briefly to the JDM market mirrors before going to the single door mirror like the North American markets had, but moulded specifically for RHD. Here is some footage circa 1972. (1:50 mins in) You can just see the 240z in the background with the fender mirror on it like the Japanese Market had. I've attached a photo incase the video is ever removed and no longer works.[ http://www.geocities.co.jp/MotorCity/9047/mirror.html Since Geocities is as reliable as a Chocolate Teapot I have copied some images here. A few notes, the 43.9 means 1969 and 9th Month. 44=70 and so on. It appears these mirrors were also fitted to lower spec Skyline's of the same era.

I moved your question to this thread, as it was more appropriate here and you can read through this thread which basically has a similar discussion to what you're asking already.

Just date stamped later? -
