Can't argue with that, I love it also. Along with the 432-R 'ribbed' rear wing on the hatch it's 1 of my favorite early car features.
  2. They don't look like OEM Topy wheels, rather another type of steel wheel (not sure what they are off).

Thanks I had a look but wasn't able to see any photos of their kit installed to see if it would look like the stock set up.

I have a contact in the US who wants non-defrost glass in return (has a couple of Fairlady Z's), but I imagine the shipping costs alone are going to be expensive. Plus risk of damage was a concern for me. Is Adam where you sourced your defrost glass from George?
  5. Geographic restrictions . Hopefully someone will upload to Youtube.
  6. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Datsun-Z-Series-RARE-ORIGINAL-PROJECT-240-SERIES-1-VERY-EARILY-/162065540509 Yes indeed "Very EARILY". Current bid:US $3,550.00 [ 33 bids ] 3 days to go. Says in the video runs and drives great, then take off video shows it sputtering and hesitating lol... sure..
  7. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Datsun-Z-Series-/272235854521 Current bid:US $8,100.00 Reserve not met [ 18 bids ] Buy it now at $15k. This car looks like the former Victoria British Queen of the cover car. Perhaps it's trying to re-live it's glory days, but the old makeover is looking a bit tired. I'd be happy if I never saw seats like that in a 240z again .
  8. Is it rabbit season or has the recent increase in early 240z values in the North American market encouraged a few people to list their early 240z's lately? I dunno... It seems quite a few listed. Let's start with the best and work our way down . The first is located in Dubai. It looks like it has had quite a bit of work done to it and is fairly original. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Datsun-Z-Series-/182123054750 Current bid:US $10,100.00 Reserve not met [ 42 bids ] *Edit update: Buy it now added at $37,000 USD HLS30-06208 Engine No. (at a guess looks like): L24-003540 (hard to tell from photo) Build date: 6/70 (according to door jamb tag) I'm not sure how hard it is to export a car from Dubai, I've heard it's not that easy so wonder how that will play out?
  9. I think another source of information would be press / review articles of the period. These were on eBay recently and you can see the original AM radio was fitted as 'standard', this car was a 73 model. Where as in North America they moved onto an FM radio by 72. The AU parts manual suggests that the home market 8-track head unit was "OP" but I've never seen 1 fitted to our cars. Like I say, I don't think many people chose factory options here. I think they got a whole heap of 'dealer' options though!

    Rear Demister

I would love to know if anyone is able to reproduce the early style rear vertical defrost lines on a non-defogger glass. If you find anyone who can do this please let me know? I can import the early style glass from the US, problem is shipping and chances of damage + changes of the defrost working are slim...
  11. Replaced the left hand side lower corner last night. This time I was a lot more careful with my scribing and filing of the edges on both sides so that there was far less gap between the new piece and existing hatch. I also used vice grips to provide a solid clamp to get me started. It helped a lot as this time it was a far neater weld. Progress. Despite appearances the weld is a lot neater with far less distortion caused this time and hardly any grinding to be done. It should clean up nicely. I don't think it will be 100% perfect after paint, but it is the underside of the rear hatch and won't be so obvious once it's all painted and installed on the car (I hope). I just noticed 1 thing I didn't take photos of is the little dimples that run along the edge where the lip is, these little dimples are visible underneath when you open the hatch and are done presumably to give more strength to the lip (since the metal is so thin), I managed to re-create these by heading the lip / edge and then hitting it with a rounded edge (like a screw driver shaft). Again not exactly like factory but close. Time to start applying rust proofing and get it ready for the top skin to be installed.
  12. I see dead projects everywhere! Buy it now: AU $5,000.00 Time left: 29d 04h (08 Jun, 2016 17:57:43 AEST) Logan, Queensland, Australia http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/252383516745
  13. In your experience which ones are generally not available anymore? Is it the hose clamps (older style)? Or other parts of the car?
  14. As per the subject, I am looking at a thread checker tool because after speaking to the electroplaters it's not going to be feasible to keep all nuts and bolts bagged and tagged, also there is a chance the smaller fasteners may go missing if they come off their wires and fall into the baths during cleaning and plating. So the plan is to photograph all items disassembled with their fasteners thread pitch and size so that I can later sort through the bucket of bolts and nuts and put everything back where it should be. That way I'll also know what's gone missing and what I need to re-source. I was looking at this tool as it seems easy and straight forward to use. http://www.threadtoolsupply.com/metric-thread-checker.html However I'm not sure it will cover all the sizes used on a 240z. Anyone got any other recommendations / suggestions?
  15. Hey Alex, Late reply, my home MIG is not at that flexible in terms of the way I can adjust wire speed and heat. I'm thinking of buying a better unit actually. The mig welders at Tafe are a lot better and I get better control but then you have excess metal to grind off. I did get a bit of warping but the nice thing about an oxy weld is the metal remains pretty pliable after the weld unlike Mig where the metal hardens up and it can be difficult to hammer / reshape. I have a few early hatches now, so I may very well restore another in future if I'm still unhappy with the way it turns out after paint and prep work, I suspect it won't be a big deal but I do have OCD and take pride in doing a good job so I expect in some cases that means re-doing things . I actually quite like the Oxy also, it's difficult compared to MIG but, in the case of this rear hatch in order to MIG I'd have to clean up the surface rust and that means to some extent making the metal thinner and more difficult to weld. Thanks for the tips re: rust proofing. Fish oil will have to wait until AFTER paint for obvious reasons. I'm going to experiment with the KBS rust seal stuff even if it's thicker I like what I've seen so far with it. Also we have been discussing this welding torch at Tafe a couple of times now. The Cobra DHC2000 Torch (also known as a Henrob 2000) It appears to use far less gas and produce a much more controllable flame and is a good cutting torch! Which looks extremely useful for thin metals. Website here supplies it with parts. http://detroittorch.com/dhc2000/

  18. I haven't finished this yet, so thanks for the submission but I still have some tidying up to do. The other records for now are not displayed and I'm still to figure out how I want to manage that part yet.

  20. http://www.viczcar.com/forum/topic/14901-solid-240z-260z-2-seater/ If it's the same car...he says WA but the plates on the car are NSW so not sure if it's the same car. Honestly if the green car is solid it looks like a very reasonable buy and price.
  21. I just bought this magazine. You can see a couple of things, early fender mirrors. Butterscotch interior and vinyl roof. I'll see what other photos are in the magazine when I receive it.
  22. Some good detail stills in this video of TKS33 SA 1223
  23. That sounds about right to me, I think 75 the alloys came as standard but earlier 74 260z's may not have had them or they were an option only. I'd love to see brochures from this period to confirm. I've seen a couple of cars with the cloth inserts in the seats, not sure if this was dealer added or just done by a workshop in / around Sydney. HS30 00295 (red insert) and HS30 00051 (green insert) Later S31's had power electric fender mirrors and also power windows.
  24. Here is another good example of some options likely fitted by dealers. http://www.viczcar.com/forum/topic/10560-1973-datsun-240z-for-sale-manual-trans-silver-with-red-interior-sold/ I do wonder if the wheels were dealer fitted as many S30Z's had them, including my own HS30 00150. Or they could have been a popular aftermarket choice for S30Z owners.
  25. A good reference photo for what appear to be added dealer options is HS30 00151. You can see the chrome trim wheel arches and the rubber body moulding down the side of the car for 'protection' from car park dings etc.. Along with the nudge bar at the front. The fog lamps are hard to tell if they are genuine 'S30Z' items, I doubt it. Thing is I see several things that are not quite original on this car, the heated rear screen looks like aftermarket or potentially a '260z' rear glass set up. The door mirror is from a later 240z, this car would have had the flat fender mirrors when new. Which raises questions about how original the paint is, since it is likely it was repainted (at least the front fenders when the mirrors were removed). Unfortunately HS30 00150 was also repainted at least once, and so it's possible it was sold looking similar to this car with the chrome wheel arch trims, side body mouldings and front nudge bar but removed later. Personally the dealer options do nothing for me, just tart up an otherwise beautiful shape and design.
