Finally got round to doing the perspex vent cover on my Z, the Crown has been taking all of my time. Just thought you guys might like to see a different style. The reason for doing this is to cover the velocity stacks as I'm getting the intake manifold shaved to angle the carbies upwards around 10 degrees. Wanted to stop water from dripping into the intake as I didn't like the idea of hydrolock.

Old vent

Took that old thing out

Traced it onto the perspex and cut it out with an angle grinder

Angle grinder to the bonnet to open up the vent space too

Using only the best of equipment.

Now gotta tidy the engine bay, the century battery looks like a lego block, so hideous.

Also polished the headlight covers as they were scratched as all hell, nice and clear now. Also permanently fixed the damage to the front bar which sits level and straight now.

This was inspired by this ZX

I run DHLA40's, I've got a mate in Brisbane who builds L4 and L6's professionally and he suggested i get the manifold angled. Ill get a dyno before and after to show, if any, change in performance.

Can you put dcoe type carby on a 10degree angle?

Is it going to affect the way they work?

pretty sure Daniel Moore has done this on his race zed

I'd have thought they were designed to be horizontal ???

What are the advantages of running on a 10degree angle?

It would change how the pump jets squirt down the throats.

The Jet block/housings could react from sucking different mixes during cornering.

And so on and so on. But does that not make a difference?

If it's better, why didn't they come out like that?

With the perspex cover could you strip the paint of the original, cut the perspex oversize then lay the perspex over the scoop in the oven to get a bit of shape to it?

Scooter

I like your idea, but I dont think the paint would need to be stripped, remember paint on a summers day reaches 100 degrees without delaminating so dont think it would be an issue.

I just think it looks like fourbarkingdogs! Perspex cover...why? Dude, just do a whole perspex bonnet and some LED lights, Sick!

something about the angle of the ports in the head? by angling the manifold it makes for more direct airflow? not sure just going by what i remember.

Nice orange Zac

But you need a cold air box for the carbs and perhaps instead of milling a 10degree angle on the manifold .  You use a die grinder to  D shape the inlet port . Air fuel mixture wants to find the quickest way into the chamber and that is across the floor of the port which is the shortest distance to the valve.

I think thats absolutely wicked :P F* the haters, Whenever anyone looks at your z they'll be drawn to the little window and seeing the tripples enthusiast or not they'll want to see what else is under there.

Weight reduction+Aero+Something a little different ;) Probably only 280 in aus with anything like that.

Nice job mate

Nice job mate

And the only 280zx with quite unique taillight and rear hatch spoiler

Zac swung by mine the other day, and yes, the perspex cover certainly had me looking in there, the only suggestion i made was to cover/disguise the yellow/blue battery with a black covering so as to more draw the eye to the triples with the red ramtubes.

It will benefit from cold air piping from in front of radiator to intakes.

Stay tuned for the new fender mirrors too!!

And shortly some new rims!

Thanks for the comments guys, both positive and negative! The battery relocation is first on the cards today, along with the new fender mirrors and cold air ducting as Jason says, plus I've got some new and different changes to come in 2013. I can see why people would class it as 'rice' however in my opinion I would not class it as such.

It's a Japanese car ofcourse it's rice, even from the factory they are  :)

I like it, a glimpse to what lurks beneath. Nice to see someone thinking outside the box.

Can you get the Perspex louvred? Then it would vent under bonnet heat out too.

Thanks man, It'll stay a solid plate for now, just because I don't want water in the stacks. I'll be improving my air flow soon but currently doesn't give me any problems in terms of heat, even in nose-to-tail traffic.

How are they even remotely rice from factory?  Because they are Asian?  They didn't come with anything that didn't serve a purpose like Neons, sick sound systems or perspex viewing panels..  ;)

Rice implies Asian  ::) hehehe. If someone drives a modified commodore or ford, people say 'bogan'. If someone drive a modified Honda, Toyota, Nissan it's rice or ricer. That's how I got the name for my car, a mate saw it and christened it the Riceburner, this was when it was all stock mind you.

Factory 'rice'. Hmmm.....I suppose you could argue fender mirrors and ZG flares on a car with 5" wide rims into that category. There's also the black glass or carbon bonnets.  :P it's all good fun, these are the personal touches that make your car unique to anyone else's.
