My next project a S1 240z resto

Well RX7 is almost done few small things to finish up and so far its been great car to drive and own. But time to move on to the next project and my true love, the S30 cars.

 

Some of you probably know this car already but keep it quiet about reference.  Greatly appreciated.

 

As with other one, you guys keep me motivated and I get things rolling more efficiently when the car is posted on the website.Keeps me more motivated.. This will be bit slower project than RX7 as at the same time will be tackling two other ones. This is my after work tinkering project.

 

OK the car

 

number matching low numbered '70 240z that needs lot of work to get it back to original condition.

 

Before any work was done to it.

 

Yeah most people will run away from this or use it for parts. That was my initial idea but circumstances changed and decided to save the old girl regardless of hrs or cost.

 

Car was moved to my place after a quick wash and refit some of the spares I had for it.

 

 

Bit of quick polishing of original paint to see if I can fall in love with the color. 

 

maybe some new badges will improve it

 

hmm not really so ended up getting some mixed up. Group 3 color cost a small fortune. Apparently the good old 920 has bit of pearl lets see.

I guess so it does. Looks very nice when sun hits it. so choice has been made its staying 920.

 

next was digging around see how bad everything is.

OK my trusty beaten up flat head screwdriver had some poking to do. sometimes helped out with my tinsnip or should i call them RustSnips.

 

 

OK looks bad. The early unprimmed ones do rust to buggery. so the check list For the body is

 

1. Roof including A and B pillars with complete roof frame. Got A pillars but rest need to get

2. Both Floors, rails and rear sections got rears part, floor and rails still to get

3. Rear slam panel. Got one  TICK!

4. Seal panels and dog leg . Got it  TICK!

5. Door Skins x 2 . need to get.

6. Bonnet. need to get.

7. S1 Hatch try to repair using 2+2 one I have if not steal the good S1 one from the other Z. TICK!

8. Left fiberglass headlight sugar scoop. Pinch fro the other Z TICK!

Rest is repairable.

 

OK not too bad $$$ but heaps off hrs to be spent. Biggest concern is sourcing a roof skin and roof frame.

 

some of the shopping list above and more was sorted out thanks to eBay.

 

Found a roof and frame after few hrs of stripping it.

 

Ended up buying another 240z with lots of parts that's going to help me with this one. Like seats dash, bumper bars, door trim and other bits that were missing from it. So bonnet migrated to this one while getting a vented one from Roberto for the Z i borrowed the un-vented one from. Also testing the Fender mirrors for fitment. The holes were there already so perfect fit.

Seats. passenger is original from the car not restored. Bit unexpected that it was in that condition hiding under all the junk that was on top of it. Driver from my 3rd Z purchase so now have a matching pair.

 

Also another purchase from the same guy i bought the roof from for other rare bits

 

So far have almost 98% of the parts I need.

 

than I started on removing the roof skin both from the car and new roof.

skin removed from the car and u can see my strengthening beams for the chassis to support the car while roof is removed

 

 

yep the frame is cactus or should I say Rustus. next step is to remove all the rust bits till i get to the sections not affected by rust.

Entire right A pillar removed.

 

 

and that's where she sits now. next is to remove the left pillar up to the airbox hoping its in same condition as right. removed it to the manufacturing spot so only cut and shut will be on outer skin the rest will all be assembled as per factory plus extra bracing and seam welding.

 

Need to brace the rear towers before removing the rear section of the frame. these rust lot more as the inner panels are not treated with any plating or paint. at least later model 240z and 260z have proper primer inside the sections and not bare metal like the first models.

 

well after I'm finish with it she going last another 42 yeas if not more as everything will be coated and rust proofed.

Mick yeah shouldn't be too bad. As long as my magic bottle is full of Monster energy drink , with my trusty 25yr old mig and new grinder, magic will be happening and after relaxing with Johnnie Black.

 

Roberto and Simon after getting a sample to see what the actual color looks like i was not so sure but now i'm in love with it. I had that 240Z Simon posted for ages but wasn't sure if it was 920 till the sample was made. Also there few other pics of 920 that didn't look like the one on the car. I guess 40Yrs or OZ sun don't help no matter how many times you polish it out.

 

But once I got sample made I was convinced the color that was on the net as 920 is real 920 not some alt mix. Should come up really nice with 2pk clear over it to give it extra shine.

+1 for staying with 920! Ive agonized over colour and still reckon that a good 920 car looks smashing.

 

Clearly you don't scare off easily.....and having the smarts to buy other cars to steal bits form will work well.

 

very keen to watch how this progresses.

Ledge thanks for the offer will definetly keep that in mind.

I worked in crash industry for few years and when was younger on my school holidays was working at a local crash shop for free just to learn. Im fairly good with wrecked cars but love to learn the old school panel beating. Not remove replace but repair and manufacture.

 

Im treating this as a rollover (more like rustover) but happy that metal is sound where pillars need to be connected.

Similar situation at rear. So shouldn't be too bad once all cleaned up shouldnt take long to fit the new parts.

 

Other rust areas are common to all z so thats straight forward.

 

As for colour of 432 not sure if 918 or 920 or something custom.

 

These is one of the 920 coloured 432 the rest are on my pc at work

 

Dat240z balls yeah maybe but more like Kato said don't get scared easily. Like a challenge. Plus this car has bit more sentimental value so couldn't cut it for parts. As long as i got time and motivation any tin can be repaired and improved. This z no different.

 

It will have all stock parts on it but will use different wheels and bre front spoiler and jdm chrome fender mirrors for personal touch.

As for colour of 432 not sure if 918 or 920 or something custom.

 

The 'Bingo Sports' 432 that luvemfast posted pics of is 918 orange. The 432 from Nissan's collection and website is 920 Gold.

 

I painted my 432-R replica project in 920, and it's impossible to photograph. Never looks the same colour each time. Flash tends to bleach it right out too.
