I posted this on the you tube section. I found it all quiet interesting

 

Cross flow L series  From what I can see they use RB20E heads

From what I saw they had machining/casting facilities. They machined a plate for the rear of the head and fitted two oil return lines to the sump. A single Oil supply looked to be tapped into the block and two lines were run to the centre of the head. They used LZ chain guides, L series tensioner and a LZ chain with four links removed.

 

Agno asked a very good question as to why they'd use a single cam head and not twin cam, anyone have any clues about the rb20e heads.... Do they flow much better? Has this been done before? They seemed to be trying to make a modern LY engine that still appeared very similar to the originals.

Using the RB20e head you are sort of making an LY.

You have to wonder if its like the Z (ie Z18 - Z24) heads though which were apparently not great for racing applications because you cant fit big valves in them.

Had a look and cant find any info on valve sizes for stock or the one in the link.

It looks like it's running the following specs:

 

-LD28 Crank

-KA24 flat pistons

-46mm inlet 38mm exhaust

-.520" lift cam 76 Tomei

 

All pretty standard stuff to do to an L.

 

This head is cam belt driven from the factory and there has been a ton of work put into it to make it work. It would be interesting to see if it could run a cam with around .600" lift because it looks like the head has been clearanced pretty extensively already.

 

Maybe that setup with the lifters is better for high RPM running? Sounds a lot smoother with the different valve train when it's running

 

It's running 55 Webers with 53mm venturies which is pretty overkill for what i think that motor will make HP wise.

 

It's definitely a cool motor would love to find a hp figure for it. 300-320hp maybe?

 

It's also got acrylic 1/4 windows which is cool.

They wouldn't have used RB30E heads because that motor doesn't exist in Japan, neither does an RB25 single cam. I figured they went for the single cam head for the period correct LY look. I wonder how much more flow they would get from using an RB30E head with big ass valves

Nice and with the cc to go with it as we know ;) you can get enough flow from an L6 head with work/mods so the RB26 heads have more than enough for under 2800cc in NA form so all that extra cc will help alot :D

The reason you need to go big in engine size  is because the Rb26 head is 63cc in the chamber and that means the comp would be so low , the head i have has been welded up by Les. so i have made it 53cc and with the 89mm stroke and 90 bore its a bit easyer to get the comp up with out having a silly bump in the piston

I am actually in discusions with Sato at the moment for the gear to run the RB30 head on my resto.

 

Would any one else be keen.
