I'm a bit confused as to what is exactly in the wheel wells but its pretty think and slightly spongey. You think the

blasters should be able to take that out pretty easy?

Oh and do i need to remove all the fiberglass in the car? (I want it blasted gone :P) There are heaps of little hidden

spots of it so does it matter if i miss some?

Just as a bit of an indicator, this is the sort of look I'm going for;

The rims on these are the ones i like Volk TE37V. Shame they cost an arm and a leg, and perhaps another leg...

It's a shame that its so expensive to get a vinyl wrap like the rocky auto one. Perhaps one

day when my car has a little less of its soon to be put on paint on it I may opt for it. I guess

by then it will be a standard practice for production cars even!

Well some progress.

Firstly i discovered that my car is made out of carboard and fiberglass;

Then I carted it away;

Then i decided i loved it too much and took it to fly to the moon :D

Oh yeah, and i bought another 260Z :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

But seriously. I found that the rust that had been covered up by bloody fiberglass was a lot more

rampant than i first thought :/

I am still sticking with my original shell, but as luck had it, the towie that i used to take my car to the

blasters had a 260 2+2 he needed to move on! The car had been someones project who simply threw

in the towel when tehy realised how much it would cost them! So it has a fresh coat of primer and has

(from what i could see) all the rust repairs already done (with METAL!!! :o). I haven't 100% decided

what I'll do with the car yet, but more than likely I'll be parting it out when i have taken the bits I want

from it (possibly the fenders). Otherwise I'll sell it as an excellent start to a project.

That's special light weight material, not to be confused with body filler. And you were worried about throttle bodies, you have plenty of work to do here I'd say.

Then again who am I to talk? ;)

Posted

Oh don't worry. There was pleeeeenty body filler too. And very unnecessarily too! For some reason thr guy

Bogged up areas to heights that never existed on the car! :/

It boggles the mind why someone would take those kind of short cuts doesn't it? I mean why spend 700 + on rubber seals when you've bogged the body to the tilt?

I guess people get sick of spending money to do things right.

The amount of time he would have spent on getting that much fiberglass and bog on the car SURELY

would have roughly equated to costing the same as just getting a professional to weld it all up...

So i received my second 260z today :D

It has all the plates to make it legit so it can be registered, also has a couple of spare panels so I'm not 100%

decided wether I'd like to keep it for parts (few as they are interchangably from the 2 to 2+2) and then part

it out, or simply to sell it as a whole unit...

When Lurch comes out to check out my 2 seater I'll get his opinion.

Enough nattering, here she is.

Luckily Lurch is coming over tomorrow and he'll give me the proper diagnosis. In my opinion it seems bad, but not terrible.

I'm sure there's worse out there.

Pfft if that's all the horrors you've found you got off lightly remember 40 years of 0 rust proofing. I'll be happy if I get off that lightly.

Chin up mate. Gotta have a strong stomach for classic car restoration stay focused on the goal.

Look at this way. You will now know exactly what you are dealing with and once it is fixed properly it should last another 30 to 40 years even longer if look after it really well.

The key is fixing it properly and Lurch will indeed do that.

No couldn't leave you hanging there after you guys seemed so interested!:D

I have moved sideways with the plan for this car and gone and bought myself a MIG! Sure it's going to take me about 10 times longer

to do it than Lock, and it will be 10 times worse a job, but it saves me about 5 times the money, and if i do my maths, thats a lot of....

Times?

Anyway, going to teach myself how to do this all. After reading up on some suggestions and hints I'll sit myself down at a scrap panel

and do as much practicing as i can before i touch the old girl.

As far as replacement panels go, i have bought/ replaced;

-Right side floor panel (mayyyy do left too)

-both doglegs

-floor sills (under the doors)

-fenders

Still need;

-Hatch sill

-bonnet

-doors (oh god this is the part I'm not looking forward to finding)

-Left rail end

-seat rail supports

-(plus lots of other random bits that I'll have to make up myself)
