53-681 Posted April 15, 2012 Author Posted April 15, 2012 **13/04/2012 - Received vehicle from mechanic. Head replaced by a PMC head, VRS kit replacements, engine flushed out etc. Another $1386 + $400... **14/04/2012 - Initially the engine temp was always running at past the half way mark, but has since stabilized **15/04/2012 - Engine now occasiannaly pinging... Its like theres a cough sound coming from from the front engine bay and rear exhaust. I wonder if using unleaded 98 might have anything to do with it? Vehicle will go back to mechanic after first 1000Km's to check or retention cylinder head Quote
peter mc Posted April 15, 2012 Posted April 15, 2012 boso its a second hand head i sold you not one of mine there is a big difrence , bring it back to the shop that fitted it if its not right make them fix it, dont do a 1000ks it wont get better by its self Quote
Scoota G Posted April 15, 2012 Posted April 15, 2012 A cough sound? That sounds like they have set the camshaft crankshaft timing in correctly! I would take it straight back!!!!! Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted April 16, 2012 Administrators Posted April 16, 2012 Pinging sounds like a rattling noise coming from the engine under load in particular, like if you stuck it in 5th and used the torque of the motor and put your foot to the floor. If the timing is too advanced, or the octane of the fuel too low, you'll hear a clanking rattling noise. It will usually go away under light throttle / slow acceleration so you'll know exactly what noise it is. As others have said, the the car feels wrong take it back to the mechanic. Quote
53-681 Posted April 16, 2012 Author Posted April 16, 2012 I'm going to take it back this Wedensday for a quick squiz after work. Maybe carburetor problem? The noise is like a fling / backfire Quote
MaygZ Posted April 16, 2012 Posted April 16, 2012 Backfiring through the carby due to crappy timing. Quote
53-681 Posted April 19, 2012 Author Posted April 19, 2012 Yes! It was timing!!! How did you know zomg what the f!@# :D Its all fixed now and the car flies vrrroooooooom! I think I'm going to have to sell it soon though due to financial difficulties... Quote
luvemfast Posted April 19, 2012 Posted April 19, 2012 Hopefully you don't have to sell it as it really is a beautiful car Sam. Enjoy it and love it! Quote
53-681 Posted April 20, 2012 Author Posted April 20, 2012 Haha I hope not, but its costing me far too much mechanically and fuel wise. Thanks Simon By the way I'd really like to bring it in to your garage again so that you can sync the carbies and find the peak timing again. Maybe after I get elec dizzy in there this weekend??? Quote
luvemfast Posted April 20, 2012 Posted April 20, 2012 First things first. Those linkages are terrible. They will just move and get the carb's out of sync again after an hour! Can you get some replacements? What are the specs of the engine now with the work you've done? Quote
53-681 Posted April 20, 2012 Author Posted April 20, 2012 Its still the same: -L26 -240Z carbs with trumpets and socks -Points Distributor -NGK BP6e plugs -New Head Gasket (I'm not too sure which one it is yet) -Reconditioned 2nd hand cylinder head with some minor work (Turbo head? PeterMc can confirm?) I paid $1386 to the mechanic this time of round (excluding the head) Quote

Corsa224 Posted June 8, 2012 Posted June 8, 2012 Hi Bozo, Have you replaced the quater window rubber seals yet or the metal bracket that runs from the door to the roof? Quote
53-681 Posted June 8, 2012 Author Posted June 8, 2012 Hi Corsa, Yes, I have replaced both door and hatch seals - purchased from Auto One. They made a mistake twice by ordering in 2 seater 260z ones, but otherwise they're ok. Quote
lightmaster240z Posted June 8, 2012 Posted June 8, 2012 Are you ready to sell your 260 to me yet Quote
