Hey guys,

Just need some advice from the guys  who've upgraded to the 1" master. For a bit of peace of mind, I'd like to find some bigger reservoirs as the ones that come with the part new and kinda small. I've spoken to a couple of brake shops and they don't seem very eager to assist me. So if anyone knows where to get some bigger ones(or one?) that would be swell.

Cheers

Believe me, larger reservoirs aren't needed ;)

But if you insist, just go wrecker hunting & see if you can find some off another model Nissan that are larger & will fit.

It is probably true that a large reservoir isn't needed but it is required. If you upgrade the brake calipers you must have a reservoir of sufficient capacity to activate all pistons with all brake material worn away. You need to measure the thickness of the pad material and then calculate the volume all pistons would displace in moving that distance. That volume must be at least matched by the capacity of the master cylinder reservoir.

Peter,

I think you are right, but only if you are planning on fitting and forgetting.  Surely you would check your fluid levels on a regular basis (eg before and after each track event and during regular servicing)?  I used to check the discs and calipers after and before each event, but I used different pads for track and road.

As the level goes down, can't you just top it up?

Is the volume of the brakes you're running any or much bigger than those on a patrol?

My apologies if I didn't make it clear. This has nothing to do with commonsense, it is an engineering regulations requirement designed for drivers fitting the lowest common denominator of mechanical understanding and appreciation (e.g. every female member of my family!).

My car will be required to have a reservoir of at least 264.2cc capacity.

I understand completely.  Enough said.

Is the patrol 1" m/c bolt on and is there any point to using that over the 15/16ths 280ZX one?

Yes it is a direct bolt on.

If you upgrade the fronts to 4-pot callipers & rear disc brakes, you'd be better off with the 1" as the pedal is too low with the 15/16" one.

This is of coarse from my own personal experience - other might have a different view...

Great timing on this topic for me, as I am trying to find a replacement for my original M/C and not having much luck with the usual spares suppliers (most look at you and reply "a 240 what?"). The patrol M/C might be the best solution, can anyone tell me the model I need to quote? Is it the MQ?

Thanks.

Should have mentioned, this is part of upgrading to hilux calipers as well. Was happy to keep the stock M/C, but as it was getting difficult to source here thought I might as well do the other end as well.

Thanks for the warning all the same  :)

i bought a new 1" master from repco a while ago for $220

For what its worth, after a call from a fellow zed owner i just looked these up.

Available through ATAP (Australian Truck and Auto Parts) as a PROTEX brand, they retail for $159 at Any autobarn store + freight if applicable.

Application listing is for a 2/77-6/79 60 series patrol.

This may have been answered before so feel free to shoot me down.. Do the brake lines attach to the bottom of this 1" master?  I run hilux fronts and r31 rear with 15/16 no problems so far, is this ok/safe or should I upgrade? :-\

ahh, i thought you allready had one scott?

I can order one in, but i will need a deposit.

I dont know when my next ATAP order will be, so either add freight and it'll be within a day or so, or if there is no rush, no freight and it'll probably be a fortnight?
