G'day, I'm Pete and it seems I've jumped the gun...posted a topic in "Wanted" before introducing myself...such is the anxiety I feel at times when I'm desperate for parts ! only heaven knows why I didn't collect heaps more years ago when I had the chance to obtain them easily, I've had the car for ten years and it all started from a nostalgia trip...you see, back in the '70s a friend said "Have a drive of this"...pointing to his near new 240 and handing over the keys

 

So I had a drive and the acceleration blew me away plus I thought the styling was, lets say different from the square look of most Japanese cars at the time but obviously it was meant to be a hard top sports car...the real funny thing was though, that my friend never said anything about the engine and I didn't open the bonnet so for years after fair dinkum I kept thinking how quick and lively that "four cylinder" was drrrrr

 

Ten years ago my finances looked good so I searched for a 240, by this time yep I knew they had another two cylinders but in my neighborhood I found two cars available, bought the one I though was the best prospect for resto, however, a nine inch angle grinder was the only tool I needed to finish that job...so the search was on for a rust free shell

 

Damn, I found one ! at Sportsclassic but alas someone had taken an oxy nibblers and cut out the tail light openings for some reason...OK so I implanted the ones from my first 240 which solved that problem...I spent a month of Sundays precisely cutting and shutting and you can't tell the difference now that it's finished

 

The new shell came with doors, front guards, radiator and a multitude of small items, lucky for me because the doors and guards on my first Z were shot...(I've never seen so much iron oxide in one car before as was in my first Z, everywhere I looked there was either body filler or fibre glass matting, even the roof frame was held together by FG/matting), the car must have been parked near salt water 24/7 !

 

The diff was very noisy so I'm going to machine out the housing to fit a second double row pinion bearing to replace the weak single row one, then reset the gears

 

The car is being converted from auto to manual, again thanks to Sportsclassic who supplied the 5 speed box and Pick & Payless wreckers where I obtained pedals from the only Z I've ever seen in that yard...sorry I didn't rip a few more parts off that Z, it was a 260 but it had a straight rust free front guard so bought that, paid the going price not knowing what I'd do with it

 

....better stop rambling on I think

Believe me, for an old guy like me that introduction took more effort than restoring my Z...anyhow thanks for the welcome, I hope I can be of help in some ways, I'm handy with liquid rubber and have a mould for making hand brake lever rubbers on the backing plates and currently making moulds for hatch hinge boots

Welcome Pete from another Sydney Zed boy...Oh well not quit, I sold my 240 a couple of months ago.. But still a zed boy none the less.

 

I think you'll become a valuable member here by supplying rare rubber boots for Zed cars.

oops I just had to whizz off and attend to other business but as soon as I get started making the hinge boots I'll post when they'll be available but first I must finish the moulds...I'm already half way through the right side one so I need to finish that then start the left side

 

Interestingly I also used to make small metal casting for roadsters...they were sold in Japan through a middleman...but they are readily available in the States now I noticed

Welcome mate.  I also bought my zed from Costa at sportsclassic, full of bog, but he was still pretty good to me and I got it for next to nothing.

Apparently these boots came in different sizes, I have several smaller boots which fit the 240 and probably the 260, they're the ones I'm making but I also have one that's are slightly larger and this is it in the photo, it's usable but like all the rest I have here it's got small tears which allow water to seep through

 

I hope the photo transferred into here ok, this is my first attempt, if it doesn't work I'll have ask how it's done...I dragged and dropped it but only info showed in the preview

Thanks, I've read right through that help page and the photo I'm trying to post conforms in every way, it's only 84kb so now I'm figuring out how to transfer it successfully to the message window...I've got an iMac computer, that could be the problem

I think perhaps you should read the help page again. The pictures Gavin attached at the bottom of the post show you how to do just that.

I was giving that a go too but failed. I destroyed my only two originals while trying to make the moulds.

It's not hard to fail with that stuff, I just kept going with it till I learnt all the secrets...but don't worry, all in good time you'll have new set for your car...the first pair hot out of the oven will be for my Z, the second are promised to a guy in States...then I'll just continue making more for the locals on here

Yes I found one that was surplus to my needs so you can take a squiz, this one was made years ago. I got the mould out of hibernation today and dusted it off, also checked availability and the latest price of the liquid from the supplier, had a heart attack...but I hasten to add that when used properly and with additives, the parts become very affordable, it's a labour of love anyway, anything for a Z !

I'll be shipping a pair to the US, I promised one set to an enthusiast over there so NZ will be no problem...but we're getting a little ahead of ourselves, while all the different rubbers I've made in the past have been successful, these boot moulds are not finished yet and will need testing...testing involves checking how well the liquid pours into the mould (very important) and then checking the cured boot and hinge in the car
