This morning i got this email

Thanks for the prompt response.. I am ready to buying it now for birthday gift for brother in-law and i am at sea at the moment as i am a marine engineer and due to the nature of my work, phone calls making and visiting of website are restricted but i squeezed out time to check this advert and send you an email regarding it. I really want the car to be a surprise for brother in-law so i wont let him know anything about the car until it gets delivered to him, i am sure he will be more than happy with the car. I insisted on paypal because i don't have access to my bank account online as i don't have internet banking, but i can pay from my paypal account, as i have my bank a/c attached to it, i will need you to give me your paypal email address and the price so i can make the payments asap for the car and pls if you don't have paypal account yet, it is very easy to set up, go to www.paypal.com.au Web site registration will take only 5 minutes just get back to me as soon as you get back to me registered and get it set up, after you have set it up i will only need the e-mail address you use for registration with paypal so as to put the money through. I have a pick up agent that will come and pick the car up after i have made the payments...

Thanks

Was this an email sent to you via our forum or through another source? If it is from a user on this forum please tell me their username and I can track them via IP address and usually block them from accessing the site completely.

I have 0 tolerance for this kind of scum.

This is also why our classifieds section has a warning sticky post about this kind of behavior. The bottom line is, if it sounds dodgy or suspicious it almost always is.

There is no point responding to these guys. The best thing to do is report it to the service or website they contacted you via.

All good mate, was through carsales. Just thought I'd share as i think scammers are the scum of the earth.

Key things to look for are:

1, they cant be contacted by phone or in person

2, they only use paypal

3, there always overseas

What they do is buy the car, put in more than the agreed price, and then make out it was a mistake and ask for the $1000 or so back. In your paypal account it actually looks as though the money is clearing but what they do is cancel the funds straight away.

BTW his grammar is really bad for a marine biologist ;D

What happens if you don't transfer the $1000 back? He just cancels the transfer and makes no money? Wouldn't it be a good way to catch them?

The point is there is no money to begin with. The money they send you is an unconfirmed payment, they expect you to send the $1000 which comes out of your bank account, before you realise its not real money yet.  When paypal get around to confirming the payment is legitimate, they find its fraudulent, or the funds don't exist, and the payment disappears from your paypal account, and you are out $1000 of your own money if you already sent it. Its like a cheque that doesn't clear.

Some of them even send fake paypal emails telling you the money has cleared.

The unfortunate thing about this scam is that it potentially tarnishes those people who have brought and sold Z parts (and potentially cars) through the forum and are overseas based (i.e. NZ)

Paypal is an excellant medium for transferring funds overseas - banks are a pain in the a*** and charge a small fortune for handling on both sides of the tasman. Much easier and cheaper to use paypal despite the % they take.

The other scam I have seen is to advertise a car for a riduculously cheap amount, generally classic sports cars. I have seen examples using MX5's on carsales and carsguide.

The owner, and sometimes car is overseas and you pay the money and the car will be delivered to you, if it's OS it the delivery is generally in the price.

The big catch is there is no car and they grab images off the web for their ads, a few guys on an MX5 forum have had their cars for the images for these scams. It can take a few emails and phone calls to get the ads taken down as well.

I actually got one of these scam letters in the post and it came from France. It had a dodgy letter head from a non-existent law firm over there and did the usual "I was given power of attorney and you are the closest relative" yada yada. I was surprised to get it by post though.

I use Paypal all the time..But when it comes to allot of money say for a car or something that involes allot of money, I wouldn't hand over my hard earned cash till I have the keys, paper work and the car in hand.

Even if it is interstate airfairs are cheap enough to fly and do the deal face to face.

As for scammers trying to buy cars though emails cause there overseas or offshore and offering you more money etc, It comes down to comman sense.

If the deal to good to be true, your being scammed...That's why we have brains !!!

I had a good one from a ebay experience for a Val Charger I was looking at, Apparently the guy was selling a replica R/T for 8k buy now, I shot him a email asking if I could see the car, as the address on ebay was for melb. He said he was originally from melb and was in Africa and had taken his charger over there, blah blah blah, the guy was asking for down payments from the first email hahha also through paypal i think, I give him this, he told a good story. Should of been a Author instead of a scam artist.
