G'day all,

I have noticed in several threads reference has been made to an 'Automotive Restoration' course at TAFE.  Can anyone tell me where to find these courses?  Has anyone done such a course in the last 6 months or so?

I have spent an hour or so going through TAFE and College sites looking for such a course.

I found Cert III in Automotive Body which states it covers welding, panel repair, panel fabrication, trimming, fibreglassing etc.  Sounds fantastic  ;D

Course Requirements:- Employed in field!! FARQ!!!

All I want to do is learn how to do stuff before I start stuffing up a Zed.  I know I could practise on old Ford parts (cause who would care if I stuffed them), but without some idea is naught more than a walk in the dark.

I know there are some quality books about (not quite the same as a course).  What are some of the best and easily available ones to get?

Can I suggest this, even if you were to find such a course, I know that they have something similar available in the states, you would find that the practical experience you would gain would run into months of attendence.

The best thing to do if you want to learn using the time honored method of "Suck and See" is to look at the project holisticly, by that I mean determine what you want to achieve, i.e. full bare metal strip down, or cosmetic work over, then identify the areas that need attention, once you have decided which way you want to head, there are enough of us here who have either worked in the trade or by default learnt by our mistakes to guide you.

Mick is still in the trade, I was in it for the better part of 15 years hands on, Lurch is a freak of nature not just by his Aavatar but by the fact that he personifies the Aussie attage, "Givem some fencing wire and theyl get you across the Nulabor" (I know my spelling sucks, Im only first gen Aussie out of Euro imigrants)

Show us your chalenges via pics and and Im sure you will get some excelent guidence, never look at a problem and say, thats beyond me, veryone is capable of doing things well beyond their own expectations and as a matter of fact to a standard that is acceptable if you just look at everything clinically and plot your course of action before hand.

Im always ready to help if you need advise as I know everyone else is, we are a strange brand of Brothers on this forum, and every ride here has a certian degree of ownership amongst us all.

Cheers

John

Ive done several of these courses here in WA TAFE. They are called "short courses" . They usually run at night time once a term. 3 hours a week for 8 weeks. There is a paint course and a panel course. They encourage you to bring a project. For example i brought along a front guard and a rust repair section and worked on it under supervision (with a lot of help) to repair the panel. Great stuff. Just ring tafe and ask them

They do a restoration course at Kangan Batman Tafe at docklands in town (Melbourne).  You can take your own projects in and use all the resources, tools, welders etc and the teachers are fantastic for help.

I know they were doing them at chisholm in dandenong at one stage, not too sure if they still are. I know you had to do a basic panel beating course before doing the vehicle restoration one. I'd definatly be interested in doing it aswell.

Am doing the course at Kogarah along with my with my son. I have the zed and he has a 1960 Vauxhall Victor (club spec for a 19 yo p plater  :) ). I made rust replacement skirts for both front guards, shaped, rolled, glued and spot welded, and fit to perfection. My son repairied a ding in a mudgard (a tree branch falling on the guard) and a major rust section. He was shown prep, mig welding, finishing with lead wiping etc and the car is like new and ready for prep for painting. The guys delivering the guidance on the course are "old school" and the other ones attending the course (some are back on 2nd and 3rd course) are covering everyting from old Healeys, Fords and hot rods. Having access to the equipment, materials and know how is great, very accessible and for a liitle over $300 for 9 weeks, money well spent.

Thanks guys.  I did find the NSW appears to have a greater variety of courses available.

I have re enrolled for a second term at St George Tech, basically because of the amount of rust in my daughters 280ZX. I can highly recommend it (Cheaper than a panel beater and you learn a thing or two), unfortunately I have been told the course at St. George for this term is now full.

First semester was doing some rust repairs , basically replacing previous owners bog with real steel.

This semester I am going to do a cut and weld in a new  roof section, thanks to the part supplied by "hunter Z"

The one thing I have learnt is you only see about 10% of the rust on the surface.
