72 240Z with an L28 Fitted - Should I buy it?

I don't take the opinion badly.  It's an old car, not my daughter!

 

I put it up for exactly that, your opinions!  Keep them coming.  I want the most accurate info I can get.

 

the level of rust has taken the shine off (pardon the pun) the dream for this 240  :'(

 

but we'll see what the panel blokes reckon and how much it would cost.

The panel guy reckons I wouldn't get much change from $10K.  He's going to come out and have a look at it (and the damaged 260).  He should be able to give me a better idea then.

 

It's not looking good tho.  I'm not sure I can save this one.  A shame to lose another 240 to the Rust Demon.

It doesn't look too bad. I've definitely seen worse. Would need a large investment to get it back to good condition though, unless you can do all the body work yourself.

Just noticed in one of the pics its running TM/N Magna Elite Alloy wheels, if they were put on around the time it was last resprayed red, that would put it Circa later part of the 1980's - 1992.

 

Does Steptoe have any history on the car?

 

And the G-Nose, if its the real thing, murder for acquistion shouldnt deter you LOL

It is held together with about 100kg of rust.

 

Look bad though, depends how much he is asking and what you are willing to spend.

If the other 260 is a early one (i.e. up to March '75), they are the same bodyshell as a 240Z.

Only difference being the tail lights & panel.

 

BTW that 240 is bad, but I too have seen worse.

It's definetly fixable, but a costly one :-\

I do know of a nice 240 from memory might be a 260 2 seater, (I assume you know there is a 2+2 that is a longer wheel base car with extra room and seats for rear passengers).......getting back to it, the car I'm refering to has had most of the rust repaired with a couple of spots cut out and ready for new bits, from memory it was only the seals that needed attention, already cut out. The engine bay was already painted in a mint dark blue with a fresh looking engine, lots of chrome. The car lives in Oakleigh, if it's still tucked away as when I saw it a couple of years back now. I was planning to keep it quiet should I ever sell my car however with a kid on the way I don't think that will happen any time soon as a new build is costly. Anyhow it's a long shot if it's even still there but worth trying, all part of the fun; this is how I acquired my car, left a guy a note on the window.

 

Also if youre a good detective and want to knock on some doors I know of a preety clean 260 2 seater in the Ascot Vale area that sits parked and never moves, no reg from memeory. Worth talking to the owner to see if ithey are intersted in selling. As niether of these vehicals aree officially for sale I will not post any details here re contacts howvere give me a call and I'll point you in the right direction.

That is a pretty bad example....  One of the A pillars looks likely to be pretty stuffed, among many other areas.  I think you personally would be much better off spending the money it would cost to fix on picking up a car someone has restored already, and fix the little things....

 

However, like Lurch, I'm a bit interested.... I need a LONG term project    Could you let me know how you go Lurch, what you find out and what you decide?

 

Would also be interested to see what the 260 looks like, especially if you decide not to go ahead with that one either?

I'd low ball an offer of $500, its mostly complete which is a plus, but the rust is what kills it. I wouldn't pay more than $1,500 though.

 

You are looking at minimum 20K to fix her up, much more if you want concourse condition.

 

It needs total strip down and rebuild, you will find plenty more rust.

 

As much as I'd like to see a Z saved, save yourself a headache and keep looking if you want to be driving a 240z within the next couple of years.

 

If the 260z is a 2 seater then the only major difference is the dashboard, tail lights and badges.

 

Hope she gets saved either way. I also hope he doesn't think he can grow more in the backyard.

 

The chances of it being a genuine Gnose and not a Fibreglass copy are pretty rare. You can easily get a Gnose fibreglass copy, the real deal on the other hand, well they would be worth a pretty penny.

That part is easy I have a real (well 4 of the 5 pieces that is) ZG. And when you see the parts in the flesh vs copies you know the difference. It is hard to explain but they don't look or feel like FG more like plastic much like the original sugar scoops on the early 240z. There is one guy in Japan that makes replicas just like Nissan did and most can pick his copy from the original units.

Ah, so the Nissan G nose parts look more like molded plastic, than fibreglass. Mine's a 5 piece copy then.
