mossy Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 I need some help on what exhaust to get, my current system is extractors into dual to xmember then single all the way back with a hot dog(i think) and a small muffler at the back, the exhaust size is OD 1.75in. I want it to sound similar to the msa twice pipes but it currently sounds like a truck. Something like this maybe Quote

chris240 Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 Mossy My stockish (but strong) L24 is running a 2.25" system thru 1 hotdog & a decent rear muffler. The extractors are 6 into 2 into 1..The wraspy sound I get is awesome..The 6-2-1 extractors tend to develop good back pressure for stock-mild motors. You really dont need long tuned length unless your doing some track work or the motor is really well worked. Quote

Trick is to let all the hot gasses expand as early as possible in the system before it leaves the exhaust tip. If not you get that raspy high pitched barky noise. Quote
mossy Posted July 31, 2009 Author Posted July 31, 2009 I'm going to get my exhaust done next week at performance exhaust, probably going with 2 1/4in mandrel with a resonator and straight through muffler although when i spoke to them they said to think about going 2.5in, I think he said a lot of their L20's get that size. Moderators Zedman240® Posted August 1, 2009 Moderators Posted August 1, 2009 2.5 on a stock L24 would be over kill; I was running a 2.5" on my healthy L28. I'd be sticking to the 2-1/4 max. You need that back pressure there unless its a turbo. Quote

mossy Posted August 3, 2009 Author Posted August 3, 2009 Got the exhaust done and I'm very happy with it, it gives a nice tone at idle with a throaty growl when you accelerate but not too loud. The thing I'm most suprised at is it definetly feels like it has more power and it feels alot smoother through the revs. Quote

Can you possibly take any photos of it, to see the style and location of the mufflers? You got one muffler and one resonator right? Is a resonator like a 'hot-dog'? What does the resonator do? How about the noise? I don't want a boy racer setup, just an efficient 'sports' exhaust system. Nat's steering me in the direction of the SS system for longevity and sound.. Moderators Zedman240® Posted August 17, 2009 Moderators Posted August 17, 2009 A resonator just lets the hot gas expand slowly rather than just travel through the exhaust pipe out the back and make heaps of noise. Best example is thunder; heat up lots of air quickly and what do you hear? One hell of a lot of noise! But if you let it expand slowly, the noise is reduced. The best resonators are straight through with no interference within the pipe, some resonators have little "ears" that poke out into the flow....not good. Ones with just holes in the side work best. Hot dogs do little, but bigger cylindrical ones as big as you can fit underneath the car work the best. They give you the low rumble while still be free flowing. If you want to avoid that awful "boy racer Honda" note, go with the biggest resonator you can fit under the zed! I had one fitted, and a truck resonator at the back and the whole system was almost straight through but deep and throaty and no annoying bark! Quote
dazzed Posted August 17, 2009 Posted August 17, 2009 zedman is right on the money , 2.5 inch will reduce touque, they may use a 2.5 on a 4 banger, but in most cases the car is shorter , i dont know what it is with 2.5 inch exhaust on a 2.4 but a no no . even a 2inch on a l28 in a 240 is ok , ehxaust specialists or so they say live in a world of their own Quote

Posted August 18, 2009 Posted August 18, 2009 I had/still has a 2" system on the L28 in the old Bus - it's a great size as it wasn't too loud or 'droney', has a great deep 'raspy' note & kept up a suitable amount of back-pressure Daniel is right - exhaust specialist's live in a world of their own... The noise is fine, it has a nice tone which opens up to a growl probably around 4000rpm. Stainless would be nice if your car has been restored but its pricey, I was told approx $1500 for a full stainless for the v8 zed, dual pipes into a single pipe out the back.
