Build # 308.

I'm guessing that you might have heard this before, but if your car is 'HS30-00308' then it wasn't built in 1969.........

'HLS30-00308' and 'S30-00308' were made before the end of 1969, but 432 and 432R production only reached 'PS30-00078' before the end of the year, and 'HS30' serial numbers didn't even get into double figures ( there's a story behind that ).

But please don't take this as personal criticism, or anything negative. For years we've had certain "Z experts" (  ::) ) telling us that no RHD 240Zs were made in 1969, and that the whole design and engineering of the first S30-series Zs was based on it being aimed solely at the USA market ( which is complete and utter b*ll*cks ), but the plain fact is that 'HS30' prefixed RHD 'Export' body serial numbered cars were held back from volume production whilst Nissan Shatai caught up with the initial demands of the Japanese market, and the great quantities needed to put cars into north American market showrooms.

Sorry, but 'HS30-00308' was probably built well into 1970.

I've heard a lot of that info as well. My chassis number is 121 and beforehand I always thought of it being built in 69. I was told one way of finding out the year of manufacture was to check dates written in chalk on components in and under the dashboard. Not sure how accurate that is.

I've been watching your car being done at Robs now over the past few weeks and its looking mighty good now! That's a nice red you have chosen.. Did you end up selling that roll cage?

Don't know if these are originals or not, you would have to use someone like import monster to buy them.

No they are the Fender mirror style. Not sure if they are for a Zed or not but the square style fender mirrors are extremely rare! I've seen 1 set for sale and they went for big money. I've only ever seen them fitted to the first 240z's to arrive in Australia HS30 0004 had them. Not seen them on any other early 240z's myself.

Surprised in what sense? Is there an Aladdin's cave of goodies down there now?

I was able to purchase a door mirror from the states off eBay that suited RHD I have not put it on my car yet but it is perfect.

I have been intending to purchase a LHD door mirror to match but have not had the time to do so.

I also purchased for collectible sake an original RHD fender mirror that was original on the early Oz delivered cars so they are available it just requires active looking and $$$ Lynton  8)

Firstly, with regard to the year of manufacturer I know it is a 1970 build but I refer to it as a '69 so that others understand that it is a series 1 body.

Secondly, the bolt in roll cage is still for sale. The red is the original red from the series 1 which is what it was originally.

Thirdly, Lynton could you please give me a contact for where you got your RH mirror in the US. Just to be sure attached is a picture of what I'm looking for. The LH do not fit the RH side given the angle of the stem of the mirror.

Thanks again for all your responses.

Graham.

Linsday at the Z shop had a box full of original mirrors some time back (i saw them when I was looking for one myself)  he may be worth a try

Graham I purchased the drivers door mirror over American eBay under a general search, Datsun mirrors and Datsun 240z mirrors.

The mirror I purchased is not new it was 2nd hand in extremely good condition as was the fender mirror also.

The reason I purchased 2nd hand is the new mirror you are looking at is chromium finish on the glass mirror backing, not stainless steel as was the original. Probably not a lot of people will pick it up but it depends on how good the finished look of your car is that you need? My car is an excellent refreshed 1977, 32YO, 260Z 2+2 so brand new chromium was not the look I had in mind I required excellent 2nd hand with no imperfections other than a polish up. I got exactly what I was looking for.

Some things are a hard slog.  I too searched across Oz for an original RH mirror to no avail.  A couple of fellows have NOS RH spares but want to keep them for the next millenium.  So I tried Japan and the UK no luck.

So this is the answer.  Nissan USA has just done a rerun of original 240Z LH mirrors.  They are about $85USD.  The angle is slightlty different to a RH mirror but only slightly.  I bought one through Courtest Nissan in the USA 2 months ago.

It works perfectly and for originality you only fit a driver door mirror anyway so you don't notice the slight difference in angle.  Simple answer really.  Maybe others out there have done the exact same thing.  Now you know.

If we can get an original stalk as a template we can get copies made so that the angle is correct. I'm sure you could sell them also, lots of US owners want the passenger side mirror. Just a thought, if I had an original mirror I would do that. I do know where I could get 1 as a template but I would have to get in contact with that person.

hmmmm I wonder if I could get a negative casting of mine done.

otherwise.....Im selling my original mint cond drivers mirror, offers over $2499.95  :P :P

Correction Lynton....the mirror back is aluminium (certainly all the original ones I have seen anyway).  And hence why the mirrors are scarce, the ball joint dries out and fills with crap and when you go to adjust, applying to much pressure...back collapses and mirror falls out.  Seen enough f#&% one’s to vouch for the problem.  Shame the back wasn’t stainless, we wouldn’t have the problem.

So if you got an original…look after it!
