nedloh312 Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Okay, after browsing Ebay for a 260z i found this http://cars2.ebay.com.au/Datsun-1976-260z-2-2_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQitemZ130285462202 Is it worth even bidding as my budget is 5k and i want a 260z before the 20th and that thing looks $$$ hehe Quote
Mr240z Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 There's a few guys bidding on these car. 1 from here. I'm pretty sure 5k is not going to do it for you.You might have to double it plus some. Keep looking, maybe one of the guys here will help. Edit: Just had a look at car sales there's one for $4100 and a couple around $6500 mark. Have a lookie there's the link : http://www.carsales.com.au/used-cars/DATSUN/260Z/private-results.aspx?N=4294966615+0+1216+834+285+257+4294966410&Make=DATSUN&state_id=0&Model=260Z&distance=25&State=All%20States p.s give your location to make it easy Quote
nedloh312 Posted February 6, 2009 Author Posted February 6, 2009 Didn't think so hahaha It's so hard to find a 260z that still goes for around 5k Am on the Mid Nort Coast Updating profile now Also, don't really care about location Just want a 260 because the hatchback/boot area is sexier than the 280 and they are just amazing cars! Quote
maddos Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 My gut feeling is it will go for under $5k, probably a fair bit under. Quote
nedloh312 Posted February 6, 2009 Author Posted February 6, 2009 Any reason for thinking that (Not disputing your knowledge Just curious) Also, am really only looking at manuals. Quote
RB26DETT Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 I'm pretty sure 5k is not going to do it for you.You might have to double it plus some. it wont make it up to the 10k mark thats my view Quote
reverendzed Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 If that car makes 5k I think it has done well, interior looks like it needs a makeover and if he has mentioned 'rust in usual places' that also would need to be taken into consideration. The better the prices the better it is for any of us who are selling. Godd luck with your search and don't jump at the first thing, I know you may want to get in and buy...but the deal for you may be just around the corner! One of the members of this forum has a good 260 for 6k, maybe you should talk to him and see what you can negotiate, his avatar is Lurch and you can PM him. Rev. Quote
oldmates260z Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 The red one in Vic on carsales you would probably get for a bit less than $6k he is looking for offers. Just think about it first, if you buy one that needs some work the 6 turns into 15. If you buy one that does not need work you have a better starting point (that is, no rust!) and will cost you less. PS. Mine is the green one in Qld, I am trying to keep the prices up! Quote
C.A.R. Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 PS. Mine is the green one in Qld I am trying to keep the prices up! Which is what you should be doing! I'm selling mine for a 'lower' price, because I want a quick sale. BUT I haven't been Hawking it aggresivly... Quote
oldmates260z Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Sorry if I have offended :'( Is the red one yours? Quote
C.A.R. Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Not at all mate! No that's not mine - mine I'm selling verbally atm. I was just putting through my point of view Quote
XRQTR Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Ok nedloh312 here's a quick translation of this add. Seller's Description 1976 Datsun 260z 2+2 for sale 5sp manual, sports exhaust, mild cam with twin carbys it's also been lowered with 17" alloys he thinks it's a mild cam but probably just needs a tune. I shipped this car over from WA last year, they seem to be much more expensive here (VIC). I got it cheap enough in WA and I know they pay more for them on the East coast so I figured I couldn't lose It's registered til May 2009 and needs a RWC to register in Vic when this runs out. With time running out I don't have the resources to get a RWC before then so I am offering it to someone that does. If it gets a RWC before 5/09 only the paperwork needs to be submitted to get Vic rego, after that it needs to go into the pits for full check. The car needs alot of work to get it reg'd, I mean what kind of idiot couldn't do the work within the 4, count them, 4 months I still have to sort out any roadworthy issues, if you can get this thing sorted before then you're doing well if not stiff shit. The body has a few dents here and there and carries rust that needs attention. I've been driving it regulary but the engine could do with a service and the interior could do with some love. The body has q few rust issues that will need to be sorted for rwc, but it's gonna cost too much so I'm trying to find a shmuck to buy it and take over the headache. I drive it whenever I can get it to run right but it's quite rough, if I tell you it's got a cam in it you might believe me when I start it and it runs rough, or I could just tell you it might need a tune, but I'll try the cam first see if you believe that (read his first paragraph then this, kind of ties in) This is a great looking car which are very hard to find, I'm constantly asked about it whenever I drive it as people don't see them often. At full restoration they sell for $15000 - $25000. It's hard to find one that actually looks like a good car, people really don't know what they're looking at, if only they could see the underside, it will probably need about $15,000 to fix it right, maybe $20,000 If you have any questions or would like to organise a time to view ( StKilda East) please call or message me. I think he's actually genuine here. Mate any ad that doesn't show the interior properly and the only dash pic is one with some furry shit all over it then start to worry, no engine bay pics, why?? If you're actually interested go have a look. I think it will head North of $5K only because the pics seem nice with the wheels and it seems like the paint work is semi decent so someone will get drawn to it because of that. Anytime you see something you like though go out their and look it over, the more cars you look at the more you will learn about what to look out for, this will save you in the long run. Try to get something with as little rust as possible, this alone could save you between $5K-$10K on a rebuild (maybe more) alone as most know there's no point doing a rebuild half way, you only end up spending 2-3 times as much because you keep having to re do it every few years. Good luck with your search and if you're not sure what to look for find someone that lives close to you from the forums here and ask them along, maybe a Big Mac to bribe them with, meal that is, LARGE, hehe Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted February 6, 2009 Administrators Posted February 6, 2009 That's pretty sound advice above ^ by XRQTR, I would have to agree with most of it. The seller is always going to say positive things about the car, but my advice is that this car probably needs lots of work. On the outside it looks cleanish, but that's only because of the wheels, take them away (which are probably on spacers anyway!) and you have a fairly average 2+2. The paint look ok, on the outside, but RED always looks good! As stated, go view the car. It will probably be a lot rougher in person. There is always hidden stuff and the interior looks like its shot to s%^* to be honest. I would be more interested in this car, I know the colour is not that great. However I think the colour can grow on you. The more I see these vintage colours the more I like them. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/1976-Datsun-260z-2-2-matching-chassis-engine-number_W0QQitemZ330304131857QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Cars?hash=item330304131857&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2|65%3A1|39%3A1|240%3A1318 Item number: 330304131857 It is in Sydney though, I would honestly keep the $5k you have saved and keep saving till you get to $10K and buy a super clean original Zcar. You will be glad you did. Paying a little more for a cleaner car always costs you less in the long run. Then again I could be wrong, that red car could be in good condition on closer inspection. Go take a look and if not sure what to look for, get an RACV inspection. If the guy selling the car honestly thinks it won't need much for a RWC ask to be able to have it inspected by the RACV. If he has nothing to hide, he won't mind will he? Quote
oldmates260z Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 From what is on the market at the moment the red one in Vic (carsales.com) looks the best value at sub $7k. There is also a red one in Qld that does not look to bad, if I can find some time I can go and have a look at it for you if you are ineterested http://www.carsales.com.au/all-cars/private/details.aspx?R=6448747&__Ntt=260z&__Qpb=true&__Dx=mode%20matchany&__Ns=pCar_RankSort_Int32%7c1%7c%7cpCar_Price_Decimal%7c1%7c%7cpCar_Make_String%7c0%7c%7cpCar_Model_String%7c0&__N=1216%201247%201282%201252%201246&__Ntx=mode%20matchallpartial&silo=1011&seot=0&__Ntk=CarAll&Cr=7&__Nne=15&trecs=14&__D=260z&__sid=11AB209999F9 Quote
maddos Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Less than 5 is just my opinion going on what they seem to be going for on ebay lately. Don't think many people would be willing to bid too high without him elaborating on the rust he mentions or supplies a few pics. I hope it goes for more but seems like a buyers markert at the moment. Quote
XRQTR Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Both cars I think would be a better choice to the Melbourne one, but you know what they say about Queensland cars, bring a bucket to collect the rest of the rust LOL. Look the Sydney one "looks" as though it may be the better of the two only because of the way the owner has kept it, it has the L26 with aircon, it has mud flaps for cryuying out loud. I'm gonna take a stab and say he's Maltese because of the way he keeps it with the whitewalls, head light covers and mud flaps. Hey if you get it for a good price and you don't like the color it's easy enough to get it resprayed, sometimes the color can be a gret negotiating point, something like "Ye I like it but the color looks like crap, I'll have to think about it". Walk away then call a few days later and give them a low ball offer, especially if the cars been for sale for a while they may reconsider. Ye this is how I work when I go to look at a car, but you know what I'm doing them a favor the way I see it by cleaning up there rubbsih that they can't finish or no longer want. I'm not going to pay top dollar for something that really isn't worth the asking price, some might and that's fine, they either don't realise what's involved in fixing /finishing them properly or they have too much money burning a hole in there pockets. Sometimes the asking price is not far from what the true value is but that depends on what else you get with the car besides the rusty shell. He says he has it on carsales for $15,000, all I can say is "Tell him he's dreeeeeamin", $10K he might get if he advertised it around their, but keep an eye on it as there is no reserve, so if you are the only bidder it's yours at the starting price. nedloh312 Posted February 7, 2009 Author Posted February 7, 2009 Holy crap! I logged on and saw some amazing advice! Thank you so much for the advice Anyways, Lurch has a 260z 2 + 2 and he is asking a good price so looks like i am going to have to take that off his hands Quote
oldmates260z Posted February 7, 2009 Posted February 7, 2009 Yes Lurch's one should be the best buy as at least you will know he will give you the real info on it. Quote
nedloh312 Posted February 7, 2009 Author Posted February 7, 2009 Which is one of the reasons i will most likely get his Quote

Mr240z Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 this is mutton dressed as lamb. you should be looking for rump.... spot on chris, I said it might go for maybe 10k + but i think it might be lucky to hit mid to high 4's Just a sheep in wolf's cloth's (might be wrong thou) we'll see in a couple of days Quote
maddos Posted February 11, 2009 Posted February 11, 2009 From those pics will be lucky to make $4. Bit of a roughy. Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted February 11, 2009 Moderators Posted February 11, 2009 I wouldn't like to use his spray painter; slight case of overspray under the bonnet! Plus the door frame crack is common for people closing their zed doors from the chrome frame instead of the door itself. I bet the new owner is going to find lots of oxidized "surprises"... Quote
