GregTas Posted April 23, 2018 Posted April 23, 2018 Hi, Is this the early forward mounted diff? My car is number '741' and has a straight moustache bar. The half shafts angle back from the half shaft mount on the diff. The shiny bar is perpendicular from the half shaft mount on the diff. Quote
cracker Posted April 23, 2018 Posted April 23, 2018 #741 is early enough to have had the forward mounted diff from factory. All Aus 240z up until late 71 had this. Quote
GregTas Posted April 23, 2018 Author Posted April 23, 2018 Thanks. I think I need to find a different mustache bar to get my diff sitting back further. Quote

Are you sure they all had it until late 71? I am under the impression only very early cars had this and there was 2 different lengths of 71A box driveshaft to accommodate the change. I don't think #150 has the forward mounted diff (but it did have a 71c box also). Quote
cracker Posted April 23, 2018 Posted April 23, 2018 I don’t think I could ever be completely sure, but every car that I’ve come across or know of sub #1500 or so (that has its original running gear, incl 71a box, and is almost certainly original) has had the forward mounted diff. Happy to be wrong if someone can provide evidence to the contrary gav240z 1 Quote
RLY240 Posted April 23, 2018 Posted April 23, 2018 My '71 #1410 has the rearward mounted diff but it was a factory auto. Roger cracker 1 Quote
dat2kman Posted April 24, 2018 Posted April 24, 2018 I am 99% sure I have a spare later 240 rear bar, it s the ffset type that has the diff more to rear Can package and post to Tas no probs. Quote
KatoKid Posted April 25, 2018 Posted April 25, 2018 Mine is #728 and had the forward mounted diff. Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted April 25, 2018 Administrators Posted April 25, 2018 I'm seeing references to potential changes around June 1971. However does anyone have any photos of what's different between early mounting and later? Are the mounting points moved further back and everything else like mounting brackets is the same or is rear moustache bar different etc? I don't see different length driveshafts. Only the flange and slip in yoke style ones. I was under the impression there was 2 different length ones. Quote

GregTas Posted April 25, 2018 Author Posted April 25, 2018 (edited) Not sure now if it's worth the stuffing around to get the R180 going shifted further back. I might make the change to R200 now. I've still got a few other jobs left on the car so it's not holding me up yet, but can't get my tailshaft made (needed for Rb25) until I sort the diff out. Just thinking about my options now i.e. R180, R200 SN good choice of ratios, but a bit of work or R200 LN simpler, but let options with them. Are the mounting points moved further back and everything else like mounting brackets is the same or is rear moustache bar different etc? I'm keen to know too if the under bodies are all the same and it's just the bolt on bits that are different. Edited April 25, 2018 by GregTas Quote
dat2kman Posted April 25, 2018 Posted April 25, 2018 Moustache bar to body flor drop pins, the drop pins are at same position. It was the bar that was kinked forward. Half shafts stayed same. Front mount under diff, early type, the two diff bolts qre inline with the single stud under, that fits front x member. Later front diff mounts, from md 1, the two diff mount bolts are ffset to rear, and moustache bar became flat, this pulled diff back approx 1". Half shafts were then straight. The slip jointed flange to flange tailshafts have around 5" of spline engaged, 1" would not have been an issue. Quote
