reverendzed Posted May 10, 2008 Posted May 10, 2008 Hi Guys, Well first holidays in over 3 years so I thought Uhmmm better find something to do! I thought I need to fix some very small rust bubbles (these are like the ones you read about in car ads) well I got started and it didn't take long to find HOLIDAY TERROR! My zed had at one time in its life had a small bingle in the driverside rear...problem is they must have taken it to a deaf, dumb & blind panel beater! It was never done properly and it has been rusting away under the bog for years! I'm glad I found it now but after removing a 500 X40mm piece of her rear, now the big job starts. While i'm doing this I'm going to remodel her rear end, weld up those big round holes (not sure what they are for) bumper mounts and give it a nice smooth finish! will post pics when she's done. Reminds me when I bout my first zed. You think it looks good but when you start stripping pain and bog, the jaw drops! Have fun! Quote

My 260 had an artist who obviously practised in bog, problem being, he never actually fixed anything,it was just bog central. I even found bits of metal that weren't actually attached to anything, just held in position with bog. It looked great till i started cutting to fit flares. I nearly cried. Quote

I thought I had finished cutting...only to find MORE! anyway after a full day cutting, cleaning, removing pieces from our donor car and stacks of welding, I think I've at least got the rear end back to metal! I've even got a great sun tan from the Mig Welder....what more could you want! Tomorrow I will hopefully get to some grinding of welds and slight skim of filler (I hope) here's a few pics of today's journey. Quote

reverendzed Posted May 11, 2008 Author Posted May 11, 2008 Hey Bruce, I'm self taught out of necessity! I recently purchased mine on EBAY for$200 (new) and it seems to work well. It has the ability to take gas as well, however so far I have been running it without and using the appropriate welding wire. I'll have a look at the specs of it and post it tomorrow. I welded years ago and just practised a bit and the result so far isn't too bad and it's a whole cheaper than getting someone else to do it....hope this helps! Rev. Quote
620Z Posted May 11, 2008 Posted May 11, 2008 Hey Rev, Please tell me you will be getting rid of those two rubber holes in the back of the car. Weld them in and also bog up the long indented strip along the back and your rear will look awesome. Easy job while you are there now. Check mine out as I did the same (even though I kept the rear bumper). With those black stripes I reckon your car will look a million dollars. Have fun on your holiday. Quote

I built up layers of bog and used a large cheese grater bog file to get some nice even surfaces, finished with sanding and now ready for spray putty, primer and finish tomorrow, I'll be glad to get her all fixed up and back on the road. reverendzed Posted May 12, 2008 Author Posted May 12, 2008 Hey Maddos, Yeah, my son has an old 260 that we are butchering for his resto and mine...the amazing thing is that when I went to cut a piece for the bottom of my rear quarter the donor was rusted there as well, however I cut a piece from the rear valence and it had the exact shape I needed...some would say luck, I would say the Lord knew I needed it....I'm glad there won't be any rust in heaven! reverendzed Posted May 13, 2008 Author Posted May 13, 2008 Well it's always fun when it gets to paint time! today I finished off some areas around the inner hatch, then primed, sanded and knife filler, then spray putty, guide coat, sand1 last spray putty and sand......and then.....Color! 4 coats of color and 4 coats of clear being careful to thin and fade into the existing paint. All in all while I didn't plan to be doing all this I'm happy with the end result. I will post final pics after I wet sand, buff and reapply stripes. Quote

I've had volvo driving soccer mum's hit my car at the front twice, back when I was a broke Uni student working at a video shop. Once they damanged the bonnet, second time the bumper bar. So I'm considering sticking the rear bumper back on. Its a shame cause the Z looks tops shaved around the rear like that. Quote
Moderators Zedman240® Posted May 13, 2008 Moderators Posted May 13, 2008 Hey Gav, you just reminded me when I got my first 260Z painted; 3 months later an old guy in a ute didn't realize he was rolling backwards until by bonnet stopped him, German tourist took out my whole passenger side from the rear wheel to the front guard, Renault Fuego up the arse, Citipower Van backing in to my right rear wheel arch. The only panel untouched was the roof! What I learned, If you love your Zed, don't drive it everyday! Excellent job Rev! you saved yourself lots of moula! Quote

RBZ 260 Posted May 16, 2008 Posted May 16, 2008 lol when i got my 2+2 it had the same treatment done. but then i went through all the trouble making it back to stock when i started working on it. would have been cheaper and easier if i left it as it was. oh well. i wanted a nice shiny chrome bar at the time that i paid an arm in rechroming and a leg for spent time returning it back to original. good work Rev looks million bucks. (now going to the shed finding the spaners and can of body filler ) PS: are your rear overider rubbers in any good cond? wanna sell? Quote
