Thought this might be a good area to ask this sort of question...

 

I'm looking for a complete nut kit for my total resto, just wondering if this kit covers all the sizes we're likely to need?

Here's the rundown...

 

Each Kit Contains

50 - M5 Serrated Nut, 8mm Head.

100 - M6 Serrated Nut, 10mm Head.

25 - M8 Serrated Nut, 12mm Head.

25 - M10 x1.25 Serrated Nut,14mm Head.

25 - M5 x 22mm Panel Bolt, 19mm Washer 8mm Head.

50 - M6x20mm Panel Bolt, 10mm Head.

25 - M6x25mm Panel Bolt, 10mm Head.

25 - M6x20mm Panel Bolt,18mm Washer, 10mm Head

25 - M8 x 25mm Panel Bolt, 12mm Head

25 - M10x30x1.25 Pitch Bolt, 14mm Head

A problem often encountered when looking for new bolts from in your hardware store, is an M8x1.25 bolt commonly has a 13mm hex head, instead of the 12mm head found on factory bolts.

If you like attention to detail and consistency when working on your car, you'll appreciate that our M6 bolts have a 10mm head, M8 bolts a 12mm head and our M10 bolts a 14mm head just as the manufacturer intended.

Have the OEM bolts re-plated Robbie.
And any that are broken, damaged or rusted can normally be bought new from Nissan.

I'm pretty sure about half the bolts were missing when I got the car. Is keeping the original bolts a real plus for the cars originality value?

I've looked at those nut & bolt sets too, tempting, but the gold passivated? finish on them doesn't match those fixings on my Z which appear to be a mix of mostly zinc? finish with some black HT which is maybe phosphate & oil.

There's a stainless steel alternative set available but costs more $$$.

Originality? Personal choice. I prefer to just clean up fixings on a wire wheel.

Are they high tensile? That's the most important consideration.

i got the full stainless kit from cardepot + replated a couple of unique suspension/engine  bolts

Hmmm stainless is tempting... and not really much more... Seems like a nice way to freshen up the car especially considering I'll be chasing down half a bucket of replacement bolts...

Any reason to not jump on these other than cost Lurch?

Agno is correct. Different metals need to be kept apart, as in isolated from each other, including stainless steel from zinc coatings.

For fender bolts and the like though where panels are painted then as long as the bolt threads are well greased I doubt whether there would be an issue (well, not in my life-time) given that our cars are by now almost always weekend hobby cars and seldom if ever so much as even get wet.

Just don't go mixing up stainless steel bolts with zinc nuts and washers for example, any moisture around and the zinc will quite quickly migrate to the stainless and metal corrosion will accelerate due to the galvanic field created.
