Pinged at RWC?

Nope, many other cars of same, earlier, and later era, came with no shroud, surround, or little top plate, at all.

Plenty even had a metal fan!

Later, the addition of aircon put additional load on a cooling system, hence the full surround shrouds.

If you dont need "originality" a full ring surround can be made from a 60 litre sized drum, by cutting a neat ring welding on tabs, that then bolt to the outer sides of the rad. Allow clearance for motor movement. A simple ring like this, will make the fan far more efficient.

The little curved metal shield at the top of the radiator is to protect one's fingers, it would do bugger-all as a shroud. Plenty of cars running around with after-market radiators, no shroud or even a shield; not a RWC item AFAIK.

Adding a shroud is a good idea, yes it gets in the way for maintenance but could save the fingers. Greatly improves cooling. Ideally the fan should be positioned half-in / half-out of the shroud for maximum cooling efficiency. Plenty of info on the web all about that.

There's someone on Gumtree with a standing ad for an original metal shroud. I've never seen one of those, just the 2-piece plastic shrouds, generally on later cars with A/C etc. It's a matter of finding one, or going after-market, or simply making one as dat2kman points out.

Hi

Not sure about QLD but a fan guard has been a rego requirement in NSW since the early 70's.

If the car originally came with one it is required to still have it.

With older cars inspectors may not what was or was not originally fitted.

Cheers

None of those alloy radiators on eBay seem to have a fan guard of any kind.

I'd rather have one, although maybe not such an issue with a car like the Zed with its forward-hinged bonnet.

But certainly with a Mustang or Falcon or whatever, big steel fan blades whizzing around.....

I dunno why, but I always think of some poor sap in a suit and tie looking under the hood and leaning over with the tie on and getting caught in a spinning engine... I'm sure it's happened. Not sure of the outcome however...

The big metal fan on early S30Z's does raise a few concerns vs the plastic version..

Going through a shallow creek, at speed in a dirt rally, the amount of water up into radiator opening, and through the core, caused the plastic fan blade to flex forward enough, that it cut a very neat ring into the core, ripping open all the tubes.

End of rally for us!

Switched back to metal fan.

Crikey, that zcardepot one at $400 usd, whats an original gotta be worth?

Where do you see that?

Yep done that, unfortunately on more than one occasion.....

On you link, above, bloke talks about seeing one had sold at $500

The pictured one, selling at $400

Have a look at the text!

I thought that's what you were on about, but zcardepot is not the same outfit as jdm-car-parts.

https://jdm-car-parts.com/products/metal-fan-shroud-for-240z-genuine-nissan-reconditioned

I was hoping someone was doing reproductions. I wonder if another car has a similar shroud that could be adapted to an S30Z radiator?

$500 USD whilst understandable is a hard pill to swallow. When you factor in conversion rate + shipping of a large item.

Could probably make 1 out of alloy sheet but would take ages and almost justifies $500 asking price.

I think I've seen 260z's with aircon fitted that have a shroud that looks factory. I guess it's possible most were turfed years ago when aircon was ripped out?

The plastic version is an ok alternative if you just want the cooling improvement. Aesthetically I like seeing a metal shroud in an earlier car. Just suits the rest of the engine bay theme and feel.

I agree but it's a matter of finding one or making an exact copy.

Did all or only some Aus-240Zs come fitted with the metal shroud?

thanks for all the response, didn't press the "following this thread" button, so didn't see the replies. i though the 260 onwards radiators are larger, thus the later versions are not suitable?

Early 260 rads are the same size as 240. Later cars I believe had taller radiators. Never having had an A/C car I don't know if A/C rads were larger than non-A/C.

Anyway, it's a case of trying whatever comes out of the woodwork to see if it fits.

Most cars will have had their radiators replaced long ago, with an aftermarket unit fitted in many cases which may not have the same edge frame and bolt holes as the original so who knows if an original type shroud will conveniently just bolt up to what one has. Some fabrication may well have to be factored in to the job.

i defintely have a standard 240 radiator. forgot to say i have the 280 plastic fan. 7 blades? so it may not fit in the 240 shroud?
