Looking To Now Possibly Buy Instead Of Build...

Hey guys, Long time no post! (from me)

 

Wow how much has changed over the last 5 years! I'm now in my mid 20's and have started to realise that things need to get a little serious (have you bloody seen house prices!?) but my love for my dream car is still well and truly there!

Thing is, I'm now very time poor, but that has helped me to become cash... well not rich, but cash-able!

 

So to cut to the chase, I'm now considering either throwing money into my own project car (which will be 20k as a minimum) OR, I'm now considering nabbing a complete Z if the right one comes up.

 

What I'm after;

- 240/260/280 Doesn't make a scrap of difference to me as long as it's a 2 seater.

- Should have very minimal rust (I don't want to have to go through that again!)

- MUST be a colour I love. I see no point buying a car with which I get disappointed looking at every day.

- Parts can be missing!!! I have a myriad of parts from my project I'm still willing to do some work on a car, so near complete projects are ok.

 

 

Apart from the above, I'm not too picky. But colour could be a real deal breaker.

 

Budget: 10-25k obviously the 10k would need a fair bit of remaining mechanical work, and the 25k would have to be my absolute perfect car.

 

Show us ya Z's boys! Save me from throwing endless dollars at my own project... :/

Quite possibly, your version of a "perfect car at 25k" to the majority of us, will be a very tired, clapped out never been touched original stocker.

a perfect car,, will be getting North of $50k, and closer to $80k

$12-15k will get you an nice 2+2

$20-25k a nice 260

240's,,, in ok cond, $30k and keep going

 

Whatever you find, dont dick around, grab it, it wont last long!

Hahaha, I know these are hens teeth worthy... When I say perfect, I don't mean it needs to be showroom condition. Just not rusty and a nice colour. The rest I can deal with.

 

But yeah, my idea of perfect is not what you guys would be calling it I guess.

 

I have my current early 260 shell with all the goodies, so there is still the option to sink all my cash into it, (now I don't have the time) but it would be silly to not have a bit of a look around now I'm going the cashed up option.

You're still young, no mortgage, wife, kids etc etc.

think you're time poor now? Trust me. It's going to get worse!

I'm thinking you'd be better off throwing that $25k at the shell you have now.

You've already done some rust repair. Take it to Lurch to get it ready for paint. Then maybe Scoota for the rest. 

That way you can pick the colour you LOVE and mechanicals to your taste.

The Internet is great, but it's also horrible. There is always another deal that comes along to tempt you to jump ship. But the grass is always greener I find and you end up inheriting someone else's problems.

 

I think it's best to stick with what you have and spend the money on your current car getting it up to scratch. That way you know the panel and paint work will be done correctly and you can decide on what kind of powerplant you want.

 

In the beginning of my project I wanted to do EVERYTHING myself, I soon realised that the idea was good in theory but a furphy in practice. You think you'll save money but in reality often materials, time and having to do something twice means you don't save money.

 

Also your time can be better invested in other areas that help move the project along. So now I pick and choose what I will and won't do. Honestly the easiest way to build these cars is throw money at it. I find I'm the biggest drag on the project getting done.

 

The other advantage of building your own car is you can spend money as you earn it, rather than forking it out in a lump sum to buy a car already done. I find these days the costs are secondary, so long as I see progress being made I'm happy.

I sold a project for a running car myself. 

 

Not that they're ever finished!
