Dionysus Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Hi Guys I've been trying to search for info on replacing a 260z steering uni joint.. I've been on the phone to SW Motorsports who have been helpful but I have been informed that my type is not servicable but they can make a few calls to see what they can do. Has anyone gone through the task of replacing one and could explain to me in more detail what the differences are between these and if I can fit one from another model?? Here are some pics to assist. Any further info would be great. Thanks Quote
dat2kman Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 The top rubber nsulator is available. The uni at bottom is a clamp/bolt on one side, and a factory welded onto uni fork on other side. I've had a few bent/twisted ones repaired, by a lcal machine shop. We just picked the tightest condition bottom uni and used that. You sure you dont have an issue elsewhere? As the unis in the steering are a very robust, difficult to wear out item! Quote

peter t Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 These uni joints are not available here in Australia and are not a serviceable product. I tried getting mine apart once totally stuffed them. Lucky for me I found a guy with a few spare steering rods. Quote
C.A.R. Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 It's just a 10mm Uni-Joint - I bought one from my local bearing supplier & fitted it myself. Nothing special. Quote

It was recommended to be replaced by the person who issued me a blue slip road worthy. Are we talking the same rod unit here, all apart from this unit is serviceable I believe. Quote

My Zed is at the shop atm with the replaced UJ in the steering shaft, otherwise I'd take a photo for you. If you don't believe me, send me your shaft, I'll repair it, & send it back to you Quote

aircobra Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 my uni joint is just a little bit stiff side in one of the axis ( joke's already been had) lurch - do you have make/model/supplier ? or just "10 mm u joint" from skfc/rbc bearings in moorabbin do you need a press to get them out? Quote
peter t Posted February 13, 2016 Posted February 13, 2016 (edited) Sorry Lurch I took mine to Hardy Spicer and from memory was told they were 9mm and not available here. I believed them as they did all my other unis and shortened and balanced my tail shaft. : Naturally if Hardy Spicer didn't have them I'd reckon no one would. Edited February 13, 2016 by peter t Quote
