S30Z - Badge Identification Information.

Actually Gavin, its still sitting on the desk in front of me.  I dont think I have thrown a single thing out yet from the rebuild!

 

I had a look at the MSA website and it appears to be the same as the 280ZX badge (assuming badging was common around the world)

Seems to suggest it's a 1/4 emblem / badge.

The fact that it has only 2 pins and the remains of double-sided tape in the centre strongly suggests that is a bonnet badge.

 

GTI-Z - would you mind posting a photo of the front and one of the rear of your badge?

 

It would also help if someone with a 280ZX could tell us if their bonnet badge is metal or plastic.

I'm pretty sure they were used on JDM S30 series cars, as they couldn't put the Datsun one on there could they?

It just looks like an identical but metal version of the standard chrome plastic 280ZX bonnet badge to me.

The 280ZX badge is dead flat to suit the flat bonnet face of that car, so doesn't properly fit a S30 bonnet which has a side-to-side curve & swage line through it, but that doesn't stop people like myself using it, as a preference to the 'Datsun' original, with adhesive tape to keep secure.

The rear of the badge is flat but doesn't appear to look like the back of the badge in Gavin's picture.

Honestly it's not just a 280ZX badge, JDM cars have that as the bonnet badge in the place of the Datsun one...

Yeah I shouldn't call it a '280ZX' badge, I'll get in trouble with the Z car experts. But I have 3 here, they came off trashed S130s, most likely all ex-JDM cars 'grey imports' either 2L or 2.8L. All 3 are chrome plastic the same as Gav's pictures.

GTI-Z's one is also dead flat, which doesn't properly fit a S30 bonnet; if you look at a 'Datsun' bonnet badge it has a concave shape to it to accommodate the S30 bonnet swage line. That one has been glued on with a big gob of black urethane or something.

Certainly looks die-cast or pot metal though with all that corrosion pitting. My chrome plastic ones would be the same age but in way better condition. Maybe it's off a more up-market S130, who knows where it came from.

Its not the original bonnet as the car had some front end damage. 

 

The damage may have occurred after about 1973 as one of the replacement guards appears to be from a 260z as there is an extra hole drilled to suit the longer guard badges from the 240z.

I'm a long way from home at present, but just happened to have these photos on one of my camera's SD cards:

 

Here's a comparison of an early (metal) Japanese market S30-series Z bonnet emblem vs a (plastic) S130-series bonnet emblem. Note the thickness of the S30 type on the left, and note the fact that it's not flat underneath. It has a subtle ridge shape underneath to fit the S30's bonnet crease. In contrast, the S130 type is thin and pretty much flat underneath.

 

 

 

And here's an early Japanese market quarter panel emblem, as used on the early solid, non vented-quarter models. This too has a subtle curve to the back face, and is handed left and right (which is identified on the back face). It's a little thinner than the bonnet emblem and it should be easy to tell which is which if you have one in your hand because the bonnet emblem has an arrow pointing up on the back, and the quarter panel emblems have left and right on the back (from memory they say LH and RH, but I'd have to check that...).

Here are a couple more pics that show the ridge shape underneath.  Would indicate that it is most likely an early home market metal badge.

Well there you go then! It has got a shape to it after all so will fit a S30 bonnet. No don't throw it away, it may be beyond restoration if it's pot metal (had same type of issues with old Mustang badges) but a good souvenir if nothing else.

Maybe your car had some imported used JDM panels fitted.

Yes, they look to be correct for the short-lived (and 99% recalled and re-assigned) Japanese market RS30 and GRS30 models.

Measuring up the pin size on my emblem its 1/8" or 3.175 mm.

I am after some barrel clips without having to buy from the US.

I wasn't looking a factory restoration, just for function, so I just used a decent dob of silicone on each pin.

No, not the most professional solution but worked for me.
