The 4 year build 260z LS1

I have just about finished the interior of the car including a new stereo system.

All new upholstery from roof to floor excluding the plastic trim around the boot sections. It is nice to say goodbye to the brown. The front seats are Monza and work quite well a tad wide as they touch the door trim but very supportive. All in all very happy with the final result.

Just a bit of bling to go on the rear of the Zed.

The car should be registered late next week as long as the paperwork arrives. This has been the longest 2 months of this build.

Oh well the modification plates still haven't been received yet as the transport inspector decided to take holidays and sat on the paper work so I thought I would get out the sand paper and make the paint look like glass. It has taken me about 20 hours to complete the sanding starting with 800grit paper all over followed by 1200grit paper all by hand then with the air oscillator and soft pad some 1500 then 3000. All wet with soap.

The paint is now ready for the final polish. Good thing there was 4 coats of clear on the car.

Should be finished by the end of the week.

 

Once this is Done I may make a start on the 1972 240Z:-S

This will be built original.

It has been sitting in my shed for the last 4 years wating patiently.

The finish looked pretty good of the gun. It will look fantastic when you have finished the polishing. The 240Z looks good, you must enjoy the restoration process if you are going to get staight into that one. I'm not sure I could do a second car myself especially straight after 4 years of work on the one I just finished. Great job, excellent build.

Good to see update and understand the process - I see you have sunroof, was this standard with the car I did you source it after market? anything you can tell me would be of interest I have a sunroof in my 260 2+2 and are considering a lot of alternatives in terms of deleting or keeping in a fixed format with molding some perspex to the same shape. Incredible build. Cheers AK

Zeds didn't come from the factory with sunroofs.

This is an after market roof that I installed about 15 years ago.

It is a Hollander brand roof that tilts back at about 30deg then it can slide open. I will take a few pictures of it for you in the next few days.

So the zed is on the road and it is awesome. I went in a local car show the other day with about 250 other cool cars and the feedback from the croud was all good. Alot of the younger generation have not seen a zed before let alone a v8 one.

The cars were all judged and ten trophies were given out and I managed to secure one. Talk about being pretty stoked. Best modified 1970 vehicle.

I am having a dyno tune tomorrow so I will post some results soon.

The car goes like a rocket now.

Before the tune the computer had a basic run program and was 147kW.

After the tune it was 250kW.

It was a hot day and ambient air temperature didn't help but the difference is amazing.

The LS1 is also stock so lots more power to unlock if required. The torque is 600nm and it pulls like a train.

From 147kw to 250kw incredible - that tune has to be the best value HP you will get.

600nm makes everything effortless.

Now to just enjoy the drive.

It is time to make the car handle a bit better now as I have a lot of power pushing the front around. I have purchased a set of adjustable front tension bars from sw motor sport and they are a lot larger in diameter to the z bars.

I am currently in the process of modifying a set of front lower control arms from my donor z while still enjoying driving the beast. I made a jig to hold the arms in place while I cut and join an adjustable thread and rose joint to them like the TTT units you can buy. The parts should arrive later this week, more photos to be posted upon progress.

I am always wanting to refine this car into something awesome and the shed time is therapy.

The parts arrive from the UK the other day and spent half of the day cutting, grinding and tig welding the pieces back together to make a set of adjustable on car lower control arms. This is my first real attempt of tig welding and I am quite impressed with the results. Alot cleaner than mig and very controllable. I will send them off to the powder coaters tomorrow. The under side of the arm and rear were replaced with a lot thicker guage of steel than the original, and the gig that I made worked a treat.

Just waiting for a few more new bits to turn up before the install.

Just a few new bits to bolt on from TTT.

They will definitely make the rear wheels sit in the correct position now unlike the factory slightly forward and offset position.

Very nice piece of kit.

Just sucked that the Aussie dollar is so crap right now.

Just completed my second car show on Sunday with around 600 other entries and took out best 70s modified car.

Lots of positive feedback on the build and the kids enjoyed the scene. The mod on the suspension has made the car handle awesome definitely a good thing. It has allowed me to square up the wheels and adjust every thing front and rear.we the

Well done on the build.

 

I see you have fitted the Monza seats and said they fit tight sideways. Do you have any comment on the height of the seats? I am looking at various options to fit racing seats for track day use in my 260 2+2 but am tall (6'4") and so need to be as sure as I can that the seats are low enough so there is enough height for me and a helmet.

 

 

Any advice appreciated.

The monza seats are very good but they do lift you up a bit. I am 185cm tall and with a helmet on I only have about 10mm to the roof.

Apart from that very happy.
