Hi All

Looking for a daily drive for a friend's 19 year old boy in Melbourne. Will be doing country miles and needs to be a good safe car (over protective parent).

Budget is under $10k

Thanks

You could buy my daily Mitsubishi 380GT - with 4 airbags and get change from that budget. Low KM's, v good cond.  ???

So, So many choices for around 10K

IMHO needs to have

Airbags

Abs

Stability control

Not too much power

Personally I would go with mid size ala 380, Camry or the Volvo.

Now the tricky part

A certain amount of cool factor.

Maybe a late model Lancer sedan - has a similar body to the EVO 7,8 & 9

I got a Suzuki Jimny 2009 model for around 7.5k. Great little car. Good on fuel, cheap parts and very practical and versatile. Slow and not overly comfortable on the freeway but I've driven it from Sydney to Melbourne quite a few times now and it does alright. At crazy current oil prices it is about 45 to fill it and gets around 400+ km per tank. Can be pushed to near 500 as I found out but was a bit worried I'd be walking.

Air con, power windows and air bags as standard. Easy enough to work on if so inclined as engine bay access is good but I dont work on it due to time constraints.

For my 18 year old I bought him a 318i Bimmer for $10.5k:

- 8 airbags, mum's happy

- handles like its on rails, the boys happy

- gutless, mum's happy

- rear wheel drive, as all good cars are

- looks cool (or whatever they say these days...sick...bad...)

Oh I thought you were looking for ideas, I'm not planning to sell mine. It actually took a while to find mine as it seems the Jimny's hold value and not many are on the market.

I had a quick look on carsales and only found this for the price range.

A few more options here:

Truth be told I had a hard time finding our car, I wanted a 2006+ model with VVT, lowish km's (around 100k) and ideally not abused off road. I found plenty of earlier cars but it was hard to find a well priced later model. Eventually we got a bit lucky since our car had rego expiring and the owner wanted to sell so we got it a couple of grand cheaper than advertised.

I get the impression most people like to keep them as they are a good car and very practical. They are also desirable as a 4x4 being light they are quite good off road, I've not really tested mine yet in that regard but would like to eventually.

If you think this might be an option and want more info on Jimny's let me know? His mates might give him stick for driving a 'ladies' 4x4 but I'm well beyond any of that nonsense ;).

Thanks Gav, sorry I was not clear enough. They want to buy a car this week and one that is not going to get pick up for defects after 6 months like the last one he bought. I have helped a few friend get their kids cars in Brisbane but cannot help this kid in Melbourne.

My boy wanted a Jimny so they are not too much a girls car!

96-99 swb pajero, indestructible and bugger all depreciation, or if the budget can stretch then the swb 2007 onward model. Love these cars.
