reverendzed Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 Hi guys, Looking at a Zed but noticed it doesn't have any of the ID plates in the engine bay. I remember reading of another member who had some issues with this but can't find the thread. Would you imagine that this will be a huge hassle when it comes to registration, any advice would be appreciated before I pull the trigger! cheers, Rev Quote
MaygZ Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 Yes, it will cause you significant difficulties. It can be done, but it will be a lot of stuffing around Quote
Linton Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 yes not good, you would have to get it signed off by an importer,, a mate just went through this with a trans am there were 2 digits wrong on the id plate and the actual Vin no. it had to be re-imported a lot a stuffing around, and more money to importer, but if you can prove it has been previously registered in Australia it will be a lot easier. reverendzed Posted November 30, 2014 Author Posted November 30, 2014 Previously registered in South Australia and has plates - is that any help? Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted November 30, 2014 Administrators Posted November 30, 2014 Previously registered in South Australia and has plates - is that any help? The plates might help a lot, since you could probably get them to do a search on the old plate no. I'll see if I can dig up that thread. Quote
Administrators gav240z Posted November 30, 2014 Administrators Posted November 30, 2014 Looks like previous reg no. is a big bonus. http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,14462.0.html Perhaps we could make that thread a sticky, or a similar thread detailing the process if you do purchase? Seems with many cars that are parted out or a rolling shell that is stripped down this is important to know. Quote
reverendzed Posted November 30, 2014 Author Posted November 30, 2014 thanks Gav, I'll check it out - thankfully the zeds have the VIN on the firewall - that should help. Quote
Moderators PB260Z Posted November 30, 2014 Moderators Posted November 30, 2014 Hi Rev, Proof of previous reg in Aus is a very BIG help. Ideally a copy of the previous papers with a signature on the back. I have been through this in NSW and once I a produced a copy of the interstate papers things rolled along quite smoothly This was a few years ago though. Cheers PB Quote
gilltech Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 If you've got plates - assuming they belonged to that car & not something else - plus the VIN stamped into the body then you surely should have enough assuming rego records go back far enough. The plates are just riveted on, so can be removed, but why? Except for engine bay repaint? But is there any reason, say illegality, why you couldn't buy one of those blank plates available online & have it stamped with the VIN & other details & install it to complete the package? Surely that's what resto people must do. Quote
MaygZ Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 Gill, you're right but that's not the plate that causes concern. It is the compliance plate - the one that lists the ADRs that are applicable to the vehicle and shows that it has been properly imported and complied. Without one of those it can be treated like a grey import. It is my understanding that in these circumstances it it is regarded as a new car being imported and would need to comply with the ADRs of today - not 1970. It would be cost prohibitive to get a Zed to comply with 2014 ADRs. Previously being registered in AUS would be a massive help. I'm not an expert, but this is my opinion of what would happen. Quote
pauly_adams Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 If it was in nsw it would just be treated as a new vehicle for rego purposes , the compliance plate would not be a issue as its prior to 1989 as for the engine they won't have a record so it wont matter what engine is in it. This may be different in vic though Quote
luvemfast Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 Check out my my new sig....... Regarding ID tags, if you put it on CH plates, does it matter? Quote
Linton Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 very different here Pauly, I agree with everything MaygZ commented on, a friend has just gone through this with a transam problem was 2 digits on compliance plate were different to the actual stamped Vin. the car had to be re-imported so without the Vin plate it possibly cant be registered without this plate, the ID plate as mentioned is not required for registration Linton Quote
gilltech Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 I'm confused. Was this Z sold new in Australia or imported later? If there's no recorded history of registration - & therefore no history of ADR compliance either - then can the car not just be treated the same as any other old car import? Or is there a particular date that would trip it up? Quote
reverendzed Posted December 1, 2014 Author Posted December 1, 2014 OK - The Zed was Australian delivered previously registered in South Australia. I called VicRoads yesterday and had a chat with their Senior Registration Officer - he said there will not be a problem, only sticking point is that it has had an engine change which will require a Stat Dec from police? why, he couldn't tell me. I don't think the police would know if it was meant to be an L26 or L28? Anyhow whilst there will be some issue, probably not insurmountable. Thank you to all for your contribution. Rev Quote
