Azman1984 Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 Hey guys, I'm at a bit of a crossroads in my mind with my Zed and what engine I want to run and would love to hear everyones thoughts. I currently have an L26 that needs a complete overhaul which I can do the majority of myself and just send out the bigger work. My initial engine budget is about 4K - Whats going to be the best bang for buck? sinking 4K into the L26? looking at an L28? I know the cost of doing the RB26 conversion would push well past the initial 4K budget I have but its something I like the idea of. Who is best to see in Melbourne for engine builds? If I decide to go this way? Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated, Cheers Aaron Quote

Retro Z Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 For the initial $500 or so, get a l28 to start with. Or wait for a package to pop up. There was a engine with triple webers and a cam etc on Gumtree last week for $2000. I bought a similar engine package not too long ago for not much more. Quote

benny Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 Look up Len Brennan for engine rebuilding. He's back in the game now and more competitive pricing then the others. heres his profile- http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1396 Quote
Azman1984 Posted November 13, 2014 Author Posted November 13, 2014 Thanks guys! I'll have a look at all 3. Won't be till early to mid next year I get the engine done so I still have some time to save if something grabs my attention. Quote
d3c0y Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 What sort of ballpark $$ would I be looking at to have one of these guys build something? Min $10k for PMC for a long motor. Quote
benny Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 What sort of ballpark $$ would I be looking at to have one of these guys build something? Probably more around 5K from Len, len has lower overheads, hes oldschool and has a huge love for it. Quote
Azman1984 Posted November 14, 2014 Author Posted November 14, 2014 Hmmmm good for thought indeed. I could stretch the engine budget to 5k possibly a bit more but not as far as 10k I may even consider just doing the freshen up myself. Quote
andyk_79 Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 Not sure if you saw the sticky thread about building up an L26 and the possible results? Whilst I can't comment on it from experience I did enjoy reading through their approach and results etc: http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php/topic,2415.0.html Quote
Azman1984 Posted November 14, 2014 Author Posted November 14, 2014 Thanks Andy, I did see it but hadn't had the chance to read it yet. It's on my to do list for this weekend. Still not sure if I'm keeping the L26 or swapping it out yet. Quote
Patch Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 Just for suggestions for a cheap way out and have a fun car to drive, There is a rebuilt L24 motor on Gumtree near Newcastle, guy says he spent 5k on it not running yet, will take 2k or neg, not far for a weekend pickup. I would prefer a short stroke L24 rocket to a L26 or L28 tractor long stroke slug that you have to spend heaps of money on just to make it fun to drive. Quote
Cozza Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 Gumtree link http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/abermain/engine-engine-parts-transmission/datsun-nissan-l24-worked-engine-with-twin-carbs-/1061722332 Geez sure looks a treat with the yellow block and boat anchors Quote
zzzzed Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 I rember peter hall getting 260 hp from his l26 with round to hitachi's Quote
HKSZ Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 that L24 i wouldn't worry about front sump, I'd have a STD l28 over an L24 anyday Quote
Patch Posted November 14, 2014 Posted November 14, 2014 Sump and oil pick up can be changed with his 260 motor, colour can be changed, carbs can be changed to the 240 ones. Stroke is personal preference, my wife likes the longer stroke in the soccer van, which is our daily driver and hates the short stroke in the sports car she wanted, both cars are 2.0L, The dog and myself like the convertible and I find it fun to drive, it drives like a go cart and need to change gears more, but it is heaps more fun to drive so we are keeping it. I like to have a mix with my toys, my Harley touring bike is 1340cc 2 cylinder big stroke touring bike, it is fine for 2 up and touring or social club rides, when I want a fun ride I take my ZXR750 4 cylinder short stoke race rocket and ride by myself. My 4x4 I am happy with the long stroke. each to there own and how you drive. Quote
