Hey guys,

My car is 95% complete and when fitting the wheels I've realized the "Front LHS shock tower" has come away from the bolts that screw it from the top. First time I've seen this. I am assuming its just from wear and tear.

I'm after a replacement.

Looking to do it on the cheap if possible.

I'm located around Dandenong (south east) if that makes life easier.

Thanks in advance for your help.

ALSO, if someone lives in the area, I'm trying to get the car started and tuned with some new carbies. If someone lives around the area and is happy & would like to have a look that would be great :) A slab for there help wouldn't be out of the question for helping ;)

Thanks for the reply.

Well I wish it was that but I'm pretty certain it's not. The strut tower has a rubber gasket that sits at the top of the strut, then the hat is on top of that with the bolts on the other side holding it together.

So when i jack the car up, the bolts are still tight from the hat but the strut tower has come away from the top hat - If that makes sense.

Gidday

Is the top strut bolt bolt still in place ?, or has the top hat failed ?

A picture would really help make it clear.

Cheers

The car is at a friends but ill try and get him to take a pic for me.

But from your photo the big bolt through the tower is in & the 3 bolts surrounding it are still in the hat but when we jack the car up the tower drops down.

Come on guys.  Stop riding him  It is kind of obvious that the metal plate in the rubber top hat has either pulled through or the rubber has separated and allowed it all to drop out (prolapse).

You need a new top hat.

Pull out the strut, fit the new top hat and re-install.  Not a difficult task and probably about an hours work.

Not necassarily!

If someone, ie previous owner, could have fitted lowered springs or cut down stock springs.

This will cause the upper spring plate to "fall" with the spring, on jacking.

Sagged springs can do this too!

It may be that the rubber insulated strut top to body shell mount is just fine!

I second dat2kman's theory, sounds to me that on full droop the spring is too short for the length of the strut rod, & the top spring retainer plate either drops down with the spring or can be slid down. Meaning that the front spring isn't captured at full droop as it's been either cut down (to lower the car) or replaced by an aftermarket shorter/stiffer item. If so would be the same on the other side.

But if it's only one side then MaygZ could be right, that the top shock 'hat' metal/rubber assembly has structurally failed for some reason.

If you like, I can come through one afternoon and have a peek. Would be around 5ish?

Great Idea, so much easier to diagnose with the car in front of you.

Point in case was Jasonmac's Z with the broken points spring. It was really obvious with car in front of me, but not a question I would have asked and easily missed in a photo.

Cheers
