Hi Guys,

Photos of actual mirrors are here:

They are in good condition: glass is good, base has the plastic cups, springs and retainers. However on 1 side the plastic base is broken. As per this thread you can get them reproduced

http://www.viczcar.com/forum/index.php?topic=14893.0

or you can order them here for about $40:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/DATSUN-FAIRLADY-Z-240Z-260Z-280Z-510-KPGC10-FENDER-MIRRORS-BASE-NEW-PAIR-/310977821275

Black paint is ok, but a little faded so could be repainted if you wanted them mint.

How they look on an S30z. (not actual mirrors)

NOS tends to sell for $500+ each side...if you can find them.

Example here: http://page11.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/n138692624

You can get the chrome 510 style ones cheaper but they not as long in the stalk as the genuine S30z ones.

Price: I'm listing these at $580 as is, or $620 with new plastic bases.

However if someone wants them repainted (powder coated or similar) and the fasteners zinc plated we can negotiate price accordingly.

I ordered the plastic bases today and may powder coat and zinc plate them also.

Tempted too....but need to clarify what I think is correct...... which is that these mirrors are not legal ie wont pass RWC inspection in Vic or any other state for that matter?

I know of 2 cars that went though RWC and vicroads in the last 3 months with no problems. And also a car that had only the drivers side door mirror. Some 240z were delivered in Aus with fender mirrors

Just on the road so a quick reply. Tai is right 240z's came with a single side mirror on drivers door. My 73 was like this with no hole in passenger door.

With regard to fender mirrors, our early cars had them. We had a flat type. Similar to door mirror style on the very first cars. However I suspect in 71 we might have got these bullet style ones for a brief period before going with the door mirror.

This pair might be sold. I will confirm shortly.

If I can source another pair Ill let you know.

Ok these are still on the market due to high cost of shipping to the US of A.

Best price I could find was via Australia Post (item is around 2-3 kg in weight, box size is about 20cm cubed). Freight to New York with insurance was around $130 AU.

Not sure if that's good or bad or if anyone has a better suggested carrier?

Anyway if anyone is interested let me know? If you want more photos of them disassembled also let me know?

I would love them but sadly can't afford them.

I still think fender mirrors are legal reading through some of the ADR's

15.2.3.            Adjustment

15.2.3.2.          The exterior mirror situated on the driver's side must be capable of being adjusted from inside the vehicle while the door is closed, although the window may be open.  The mirror may, however, be locked in position from the outside.

15.2.3.3.          The requirements of paragraph 15.2.3.2. do not apply to exterior mirrors which, after having been knocked out of alignment, can be returned to their former position without the need for adjustment.

That last bit to me reads that as long as its a spring loaded fender mirror that goes back into position when hit (which i believe these are) then they should be sweet. Also in the positioning section it mentions they must be placed either visible from the side window or through a section of windscreen that is swept by the wiper blade.

it doesn't say the exterior mirror must be fitted to the drivers door, only that if it is fitted to the door it must be adjustable. And also i believe the fender mirrors are adjustable, never played with them but looking at the photos you undo the locking screw and rotate the glass to change angles.

Yeah. The way I see it is that fender mirrors that are spring loaded (which means they bounce into position when knocked) and the adjustment is locked (the screw on the back you have to undo to move the glass) should be completely legal as long as theg are mounted in a position that is viewable through the windscreen that is cleared from the wiper blades which yet again is fine if mounted where the positions state on the forums.

I can confirm that these mirrors are spring loaded and there is a screw on the rear of the bullet part that would allow movement of the mirror position. Ironically the photos I have show everything but this adjustment screw. Never the less here are some reference photos of my other pair showing 1 side only (not the pair being sold in this thread).

Ok so I received the plastic bases today in the post and decided to take more photos of these mirrors apart.

The nut on this side is non-standard, they usually have a flare behind them. I'm sure you could find a replacement zinc plated bolt at a hardware for

You can see nut here is slightly different.

IMG_20141020_190805.jpg

Some surface rust on metal bracket and washer that sits in cup / spring assembly. I didn't sand these or clean them up. Would rather leave it honest.

Mirror glass.

The original plastic bases I replaced.

As you can see 1 side was cracked and missing the plastic dowel pin.

I originally thought these would need zinc plating etc.. However as you can see they are actually in quite good shape and probably protected by the black plastic cup assembly. If you wanted 100% concours then yes I'd re-zinc plate the drivers side at the very least but a quick squirt of flat black would have these looking pretty decent. Certainly a lot cheaper than NOS.

As per the tmr specifications, Any vehicle prior to 81 adr only require one rear facing mirror.

IE: your rear view mirror.

I had an XT fairmont with no side view mirrors at all and passed inspection no problems after showing the Mod plate/Roadworthy guy the documentation.

Cheers Doug

Interesting, says here that ADR14 was relevant to passenger cars since 1972 and external mirrors were required.

Think you might have got lucky Doug.

Hi Mick,

No luck involved, XT Falcons are 1968 & 1969.

Mirrors would have first been required on very late XY's. The XA arrived in Mar 1972.

Cheers
